Imaging data of mechanically loaded, micro-patterned, silk-reinforced cellulose films with gold coating for flexible electrodes in medical implants

Neurodegenerative diseases can be treated using a functional interface between the physically soft tissue such as brain and the man-made electrodes. The orders of magnitude harder neural probes cause local injuries, due to periodic micromovements owing to breathing and pulsatile blood flow leading to encapsulation and related collapsing signals. An alternative to the currently used neural implant films including polyimide, poly(p-xylylene), SU-8 - epoxy-based negative photoresist, liquid crystal polymer, and benzocyclobutene is the natural polymer cellulose with an elastic modulus between 100 and 200 MPa. This article elucidates the measurement of the mechanical properties of bare as well as mono- and double-layer silk-reinforced cellulose in phosphate-buffered saline using a universal testing machine. In addition, the article contains electron microscopy data of these micro-structured, gold-coated films subsequent to peel-off tests to access the impact of micro-structures on gold adhesion on cellulose. These imaging data were completed by electron micrographs of mechanically loaded gold-coated cellulose films to demonstrate the impact of micro-structures on crack formation. Finally, the phosphate-buffered saline-induced swelling of the micro-structure was visualized by electron micrographs obtained before and after two-month storage in air and phosphate-buffered saline, respectively.

Figure 4. The mental spaces set up by the first interpretation of the sentence in the film, John is riding a unicorn-Representing Mental Spaces and Dynamics of Natural Language Semantics

First interpretation: The reality space (let’s call it R) contains an element a associated with
the proper name John. The noun phrase a unicorn introduces an element b ׳ to the film space
(call it F). I is the connector linking a in the space B to a ׳ in the space F (Figure 4). Since the
elements of both mental spaces are co-referential, this connector is an identity connector.
The rectangles represent the internal structure of the spaces next to them. The dashed line
indicates that the space F is set up in relation to R and that it is subordinate to R in
discourse.

Unveiling the nanomorphology of HfN thin films by UXRD

Abstract:

Hafnium Nitride (HfN) is a promising and very robust alternative to gold for applications of nanoscale metals. Details of the nanomorphology related to variations in strain states and optical properties can be crucial for applications in nanophotonics and plasmon-assisted chemistry. We use ultrafast reciprocal space mapping (URSM) with hard x-rays to unveil the nanomorphology of thin HfN films. Static high-resolution x-ray diffraction reveals a twofold composition of the thin films being separated into regions with identical lattice constant and similar out-of-plane but hugely different in-plane coherence lengths. URSM upon femtosecond laser excitation reveals different transient strain dynamics for the two respective Bragg peak components. This unambiguously locates the longer in-plane coherence length in the first 15nm of the thin film adjacent to the substrate. The transient shift of the broad diffraction peak displays the strain dynamics of the entire film, implying that the near-substrate region hosts nanocrystallites with small and large coherence length, whereas the upper part of the film grows in small columnar grains. Our results illustrate that URSM is a suitable technique for non-destructive investigations of the depth-resolved nanomorphology of nanostructures.

This dataset contains all raw data, data evaluation and plot scripts used in the linked publication. The data.rar archive contains 8 folders, linked to the ellipsometry, the optical pump-probe and the static as well as the time-resolved X-ray diffraction measurements. The latter also contains the scripts for the one-temperature- and linear-chain-model written in Matlab and Python. Also, there is one folder for each figure in the publication in which the plotted data and the plot script is saved.

Dataset for "Electrodeposited p-Cu2O Films – Role of Redox-Active Compounds Under Photoelectrochemical Operation Revisited"

The p-type semiconducting copper oxides CuO and Cu2O are of interest for the conversion of solar energy due to their medium wide bandgap. The position of their conduction band should allow for reductive processes in junctions with electrolytes under irradiation. In this work, on Cu2O, the efficiency of several such processes in competition with self-reduction was studied.
Thin films of Cu2O were synthesised via potentiostatic electrodeposition on FTO (fluorine doped SnO2 on glass) using aqueous electrolytes. Deposition parameters (electrolyte composition, electrode potential, temperature) had a great influence on electrode properties (phase purity, preferential orientation). Electrodeposited Cu2O films were p-type. In junctions with aqueous electrolytes, under electrical bias, cathodic and photocathodic currents passed which increased dramatically when reducible redox compounds were added. The influence of various redox couples (O2, H2O2, methylviologen) and their concentration in the electrolyte on the stability of the electrodes was studied.
Long time experiments showed that oxygen saturated and H2O2 containing electrolytes gave rise to constant photocurrents and no alteration of the electrodes was found by XRD. With the investigated redox couples, no product of interest was produced.
