Both real-time and long-term environmental data perform well in predicting shorebird distributions in managed habitat

<p>Highly mobile species, such as migratory birds, respond to seasonal and inter-annual variability in resource availability by moving to better habitats. Despite the recognized importance of resource thresholds, species distribution models typically rely on long-term average habitat conditions, mostly because large-extent, temporally-resolved, environmental data are difficult to obtain. Recent advances in remote sensing make it possible to incorporate more frequent measurements of changing landscapes; however, there is often a cost in terms of model building and processing and the added value of such efforts is unknown. Our study tests whether incorporating real-time environmental data increases the predictive ability of distribution models, relative to using long-term average data. We developed and compared distribution models for shorebirds in California's Central Valley based on high temporal resolution (every 16-days), and 17-year long-term average, surface water data. Using abundance-weighted boosted regression trees, we modeled monthly shorebird occurrence as a function of surface water availability, crop type, wetland type, road density, temperature, and bird data source. While modeling with both real-time and long-term average data provided good fit to withheld validation data (0.79 &lt; AUC &lt; 0.89 across taxa), there were small differences in model performance. The best models incorporated long-term average conditions and spatial pattern information for real-time flooding (e.g. perimeter-area ratio of real-time water bodies). There was not a substantial difference in the performance of real-time and long-term average data models within time periods when real-time surface water differed substantially from the long-term average (specifically during drought years 2013-2016) and in intermittently flooded months or locations. Spatial predictions resulting from the models differed most in the southern region of the study area where there is lower water availability, fewer birds, and lower sampling density. Prediction uncertainty in the southern region of the study area highlights the need for increased sampling in this area. Because both sets of data performed similarly, the choice of which data to use may depend on the management context. Real-time data may ultimately be best for guiding dynamic, adaptive conservation actions whereas models based on long-term averages may be more helpful for guiding permanent wetland protection and restoration. --</p>

COVID-19 anxiety versus well-being - students' sense of support and self-esteem

<p>This study is aimed to evaluate the impact of fear of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life of university students in Poland. An analysis is made of the correlation of various features of the student cohorts with social support and their self-evaluation, in the context of sensing the chances for success in life and satisfaction from studying online.</p> <p>Fighting the pandemic through socioeconomic closure and remote education is imposing a new routine on university students that restricts the activities important in their development and well-being. The research assumption was made that anxiety (N=973) caused by COVID-19 is a personal experience which is socially and culturally regulated. Culturally, the Polish society shows a very high level of distrust towards institutions and people outside private networks (the &quot;social vacuum&quot; syndrome).</p>

Expression of degQ gene and its effect on lipopeptide production as well as formation of secretory proteases in Bacillus subtilis strains

<p><em>Bacillus subtilis</em> is described as a promising production strain for lipopeptides. In case of <em>B. subtilis</em> strains JABs24 and DSM10<sup>T</sup>, surfactin and plipastatin are produced. Lipopeptide formation is controlled, among others, by the DegU response regulator. The activating phospho-transfer by the DegS sensor kinase is stimulated by the pleiotropic regulator DegQ, resulting in enhanced DegU activation. In <em>B.&nbsp;subtilis</em> 168, a point mutation in the <em>degQ</em> promoter region leads to a reduction in gene expression. Corresponding reporter strains showed a 14-fold reduced expression. This effect on <em>degQ</em> expression and the associated impact on lipopeptide formation was examined for <em>B. subtilis</em> JABs24, a lipopeptide-producing derivative of strain 168, and <em>B. subtilis</em> wild-type strain DSM10<sup>T</sup>, which has a native <em>degQ</em> expression. Based on stimulatory effects of the DegU regulator on secretory protease formation, the impact of <em>degQ</em> expression on extracellular protease activity was additionally investigated. To follow the impact of <em>degQ</em>, a deletion mutant was constructed for DSM10<sup>T</sup>, while a natively expressed <em>degQ</em> version was integrated into strain JABs24. This allowed strain-specific quantification of the stimulatory effect of <em>degQ</em> expression on plipastatin and the negative effect on surfactin production in strains JABs24 and DSM10<sup>T</sup>. While an unaffected <em>degQ</em> expression reduced surfactin production in JABs24 about 25%, a 6-fold increase in plipastatin was observed. In contrast, <em>degQ</em> deletion in DSM10<sup>T</sup> increased surfactin titer by 3-fold but decreased plipastatin production by 5-fold. In addition, although significant differences in extracellular protease activity were detected, no decrease in plipastatin and surfactin produced during cultivation was observed.</p>

Changes in microbial community structure and functioning with elevation are linked to local soil characteristics as well as climatic variables

<p>Mountain forests are important carbon stocks but are threatened by increased insect outbreaks and climate driven forest conversion. Soil microorganisms play an eminent role in nutrient cycling in forests and form the basis of soil food webs. Uncovering the driving factors shaping microbial communities and functioning at mountainsides worldwide is of importance to better understand their dynamics at local and global scales. We investigated microbial communities and their drivers along an elevational gradient of primary forests at Changbai Mountain, China. We analysed substrate-induced respiration and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) in litter and two soil layers at seven sites. In the litter layer the increase in microbial biomass (Cmic) as well as in stress indicator ratios with elevation were negatively correlated with Ca concentrations indicating increased nutritional stress in high microbial biomass communities at sites with lower Ca availability. PLFA profiles in litter separated low and high elevations, this was less pronounced in soil, suggesting that leaflitter functions as buffer for soil microbial communities. Annual variations in temperature correlated with PLFA profiles in all layers, while annual variations in precipitation correlated with PLFA profiles in upper soil only. Furthermore, the availability of resources, soil moisture, Ca concentrations and pH structured the microbial communities. Pronounced changes in Cmic and stress indicator ratios in the litter layer between pine dominated (800 – 1100 m) and spruce dominated (1250 – 1700 m) forests indicated a shift in the structure and functioning of microbial communities between forest types. The study highlights strong changes in microbial community structure and functioning along elevational gradients, but also shows that these changes and their driving factors vary between layers. Besides annual variations in temperature and precipitation, carbon accumulation and nitrogen acquisition shape changes in microbial communities with elevation at Changbai Mountain.</p>
