Dataset: Numerical experiments on the sensitivity of Chesapeake Bay N2O cycles to climate warming and nutrient reductions and the associated code and input files

A three-dimensional numerical model of the Chesapeake Bay (East Coast of the United States) was used to simulate the N2O cycle. The model is an implementation of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS, https://www.myroms.org/) with modules for sediment resuspension (Warner et al. 2008) and biogeochemistry (St-Laurent et al. 2020), with the latest addition of N2O as a separate state variable. It simulates hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry with a horizontal resolution of approximately 1.8 km and 20 topography-following vertical levels. Physical forcings include the ERA5 reanalysis (3-hourly) and tidal constituents from Szpilka et al. (2016).

The dataset includes four primary numerical experiments designed to highlight the sensitivity of the Chesapeake Bay N2O cycle to climate warming and terrestrial nutrient management. The reference run was conducted for the year 2016, which represents a normal streamflow year. Three sensitivity experiments retained the same model forcings as in the reference run, except for one of the following combinations:

Decreased atmospheric N2O concentrations, decreased atmospheric temperature, and increased riverine nitrate and organic nitrogen concentrations to 1986 levels (Test1986).

Decreased atmospheric N2O concentrations and increased riverine nitrate and organic nitrogen concentrations to 1986 levels (Test1986warming).

Increased atmospheric N2O concentrations, increased atmospheric temperature, and decreased riverine nitrate and organic nitrogen concentrations to 2050 levels (Test2050).

The file
Results_for_plot.zip
includes model outputs used to generate figures, including monthly Bay-wide N2O distribution and the daily N2O budget integrated over the Bay. In addition to the model outputs, this archive contains the computer code (
ROMS_Code.zip
) and the input files necessary to reproduce the model results (
input_files.zip
). The total size of the dataset is approximately 5 GB.

Input Files (StartingFiles.zip) and Processed Results (FreeMHDPaperAllFigures.zip) used to make paper figures.

FreeMHD: validation and verification of the open-source, multi-domain, multi-phase solver for electrically conductive flows

The extreme heat fluxes in the divertor region of tokamaks may require an alternative to solid plasma-facing components, for the extraction of heat and the protection of the surrounding walls. Flowing liquid metals are proposed as an alternative, but raise additional challenges that require investigation and numerical simulations. Free surface designs are desirable for plasma-facing components (PFCs), but steady flow profiles and surface stability must be ensured to limit undesirable interactions with the plasma. Previous studies have mainly used steady-state, 2D, or simplified models for internal flows and have not been able to adequately model free-surface liquid metal (LM) experiments. Therefore, FreeMHD has been recently developed as an open-source magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) solver for free-surface electrically conductive flows subject to a strong external magnetic field. The FreeMHD solver computes incompressible free-surface flows with multi-region coupling for the investigation of MHD phenomena involving fluid and solid domains. The model utilizes the finite-volume OpenFOAM framework under the low magnetic Reynolds number approximation. FreeMHD is validated using analytical solutions for the velocity profiles of closed channel flows with various Hartmann numbers and wall conductance ratios. Next, experimental measurements are then used to verify FreeMHD, through a series of cases involving dam breaking, 3D magnetic fields, and free-surface LM flows. These results demonstrate that FreeMHD is a reliable tool for the design of LM systems under free surface conditions at the reactor scale. Furthermore, it is flexible, computationally inexpensive, and can be used to solve fully 3D transient MHD flows.

Input files of various genomic analyses used to unravel the domestication history of Cannabis

Cannabis sativa has long been an important source of fiber extracted from hemp and both medicinal and recreational drugs based on cannabinoid compounds. Here, we investigated its poorly known domestication history using whole-genome resequencing of 110 accessions from worldwide origins. We show that C. sativa was first domesticated in early Neolithic times in East Asia and that all current hemp and drug cultivars diverged from an ancestral gene pool currently represented by feral plants and landraces in China. We identified candidate genes associated with traits differentiating hemp and drug cultivars, including branching pattern and cellulose/ lignin biosynthesis. We also found evidence for loss of function of genes involved in the synthesis of the two major biochemically competing cannabinoids during selection for increased fiber production or psychoactive properties. Our results provide a unique global view of the domestication of C. sativa and offer valuable genomic resources for ongoing functional and molecular breeding research.

Viet Nam Technology catalogue for power generation and storage. Input for power system modelling

The first Viet Nam Technology Catalogue was published in 2019. This new version includes all the technologies from the 2019 version that have been reviewed and updated where necessary. A main focus of the update has been to add new subcategories of technologies (roof-top solar PV, floating offshore wind, low wind speed turbines, improved flexibility of coal fired plants and pollution prevention technologies for coal power) as well as completely new technology descriptions and data sheets (tidal power, wave power, carbon capture and storage, coal CFB boilers and industrial cogeneration).

This publication is developed under the Danish-Vietnamese Energy Partnership.

The technologies described in this catalogue cover both very mature technologies and emerging technologies, which
are expected to improve significantly over the coming decades, both with respect to performance and cost. This
implies that the cost and performance of some technologies may be estimated with a rather high level of certainty
whereas, in the case of other technologies, both cost and performance today and in the future is associated with a
high level of uncertainty. All technologies have been grouped within one of four categories of technological
development described in the section on research and development indicating their technological progress, their
future development perspectives and the uncertainty related to the projection of cost and performance data.

The technologies in the catalogue include the power production unit and the connection to the grid. This means
that the boundary for both cost and performance data are the generation assets plus the infrastructure required to
deliver the energy to the main grid. For electricity, this is the nearest substation of the transmission grid. This
implies that a MW of electricity represents the net electricity delivered, i.e. the gross generation minus the auxiliary
electricity consumed at the plant. Hence, efficiencies are also net efficiencies.

The text and data have been edited based on Vietnamese cases to represent local conditions. For the mid- and long-
term future (2030 and 2050) international references have been relied upon for most technologies since Vietnamese
data is expected to converge to these international values. In the short run differences may exist, especially for the
emerging technologies. Differences in the short run can be caused by e.g. current rules and regulations and level of
market maturity of the technology. Differences in both the short and long run can be caused by local physical
conditions, e.g. seabed material and offshore conditions can affect costs of offshore wind farms and wind speed can
affect the dimensioning of rotor vs. generator which can influence the cost, or domestic coal quality can affect
efficiency and variable cost of coal-fired plants as well.

Land use is assessed but the cost of land is not included in the total cost assessment since this depends on local
conditions.
