Gaussian polarizable-ion tight binding (Supplemental Data)

This is a collection of input and output files for the publication below.

Abstract:

To interpret Ultrafast Dynamics experiments on large molecules, computer simulation is required due to the complex response to the laser field. We present a method capable of efficiently computing the static electronic response of large systems to external electric fields. This is achieved by extending the density-functional tight binding method to include larger basis sets and by multipole expansion of the charge density into electrostatically interacting Gaussian distributions. Polarizabilities for a range of hydrocarbon molecules are computed for a multipole expansion up to quadrupole order, giving excellent agreement with experimental values, with average errors similar to those from density functional theory, but at a small fraction of the cost. We apply the model in conjunction with the polarizable-point-dipoles model to estimate the internal fields in amorphous Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl).

Underlying dataset for battery pack degradation - Understanding aging in parallel-connected lithium-ion batteries under thermal gradients

This record constitutes the raw data underlying the paper "Battery pack degradation - Understanding aging in parallel-connected lithium-ion batteries under thermal gradients" (preprint link)

The dataset contains all raw data, processed data and analysis codes used to generate figures in the publication. Abstract is as follows:

Practical lithium-ion battery systems require parallelisation of tens to hundreds of cells, however understanding of how pack-level thermal gradients influence lifetime performance remains a research gap. Here we present an experimental study of surface cooled parallel-string battery packs (temperature range 20-45 °C), and identify two main operational modes; convergent degradation with homogeneous temperatures, and (the more detrimental) divergent degradation driven by thermal gradients. We attribute the divergent case to the, often overlooked, cathode impedance growth. This was negatively correlated with temperature and can cause positive feedback where the impedance of cells in parallel diverge over time; increasing heterogeneous current and state-of-charge distributions. These conclusions are supported by current distribution measurements, decoupled impedance measurements and degradation mode analysis. From this, mechanistic explanations are proposed, alongside a publicly available aging dataset, which highlights the critical role of capturing cathode degradation in parallel-connected batteries; a key insight for battery pack developers.

Data from: Direct quantification of ion composition and mobility in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors

Ion transport in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) is crucial due to its direct impact on device response time and fundamental operating mechanisms but are often assessed indirectly or rely on extra assumptions. Operando X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a powerful, direct probe useful for elemental characterization of bulk OMIECs, and was employed to directly quantify ion composition and mobility in a model OMIEC, PEDOT:PSS, during device operation. The first cycle revealed slow electrowetting and cation-proton exchange. Subsequent cycles showed rapid response with minor cation fluctuation (~5%). Comparison with optical-tracked electrochromic fronts revealed a mesoscale structure dependent proton transport. The calculated effective ion mobility demonstrated thickness-dependent behavior, emphasizing an interfacial ion transport pathway with a higher mobile ion density. The decoupling of bulk and interfacial effects on ion mobility, and the decoupling of cation and proton transport contributes to our understanding of ion transport in conventional and emerging OMIEC-based devices, and has broader implications for ion transport in other ionic conductors writ large.

Porous Organic Polymers with Heterocyclic Crown Ethers for Selective Lithium-Ion Capture

Abstract of the publication: Lithium is a key resource of the 21st century. Despite that, Li is traditionally mined rather than obtained from maritime brines or secondary sources such as spent energy-storage devices owing to the difficulties in Li recovery. Herein, we present a porous organic polymer capable of capturing Li ions from aqueous solutions through highly pre-organized heterocyclic crown ether-like pores in the polymer backbone. These features enable Li+ uptake capacities over 120 mg g-1 and selectivity versus highly competitive ions such as Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+.

Origin of ion bombardment induced Tb oxidation in Tb/Co multilayers

It has previously been shown that ion bombardment can used to selectively reduce the contribution of the rare earth sublattice in rare earth/transition metal ferrimagnets by selective oxidation. However, the exact mechanism by which oxidation occurs remains an outstanding question. Using this dataset, we show that the point defects introduced by ion bombardment of Tb/Co multilayers using different ion species with projected range (i.e., 10 keV He+, 15 keV O+, and 30 keV Ga+) create easy diffusion paths for oxygen to penetrate the system.

This dataset includes:
Magneto-optic measurements using P-MOKE magnetometer and Kerr effect microscope
Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) depth profiles
In-situ resistance measurements

Input files for TRIDYN simulations
Results from TRIDYN simulations

This work was supported by National Science Centre Poland under OPUS funding Grant No. 2020/39/B/ST5/01915 at the Institute of Molecular Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
