The goal was to reveal diel rhythmicity in the metabolic activity of single-celled microbial eukaryotes (protists) within an eddy in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre by environmental collection, PCR amplification and sequencing of the 18S V4 region. As well as four metatranscriptomes targeting eukaryotic gene expression from different depths aimed at understanding important metabolic processes in different pelagic zones.</p>
Using nudges to promote clinical decision making of healthcare professionals: A scoping review
<p>Nudging has been discussed in the context of policy and public health, but not so much within healthcare and how it can be applied to change the behavior of healthcare professionals (HCPs). This scoping review aimed to assess the empirical evidence on how nudging techniques can be used to affect the behavior of HCPs in clinical settings.</p> <p>A systematic database search was conducted for the period January 2010-December 2020 using the PRISMA extension for Scoping Review checklist. Two reviewers independently screened each article for inclusion. Included articles were reviewed to extract key information about each intervention, including purpose, target behavior, measured outcomes, key findings, nudging strategies used, and their theoretical underpinnings. Two independent dimensions were used to describe nudging strategies according to action and timing where each of the identified nudging strategies and objectives was characterized as active, passive, synchronous, or asynchronous. </p> <p>Of the included 51 articles, 40 reported statistically positive results, six reported no success and two reported mixed results. Thirteen different nudging strategies were identified aimed at modifying four types of HPCs behavior:prescriptions/orders, procedure, hand hygiene, and vaccination. The most common nudging strategy used involved default/pre-order nudges, followed by alerts/reminders and active choice. Both passive and active nudges showed positive results, highlighting the importance of long-term studies that evaluate if the desired outcome is maintained. Careful ethical consideration should however be given to passive strategies where the user might not be aware of the nudge. </p>
Data from: Changes of Chinese forest-grassland ecotone in geographical scope and landscape structure from 1990 to 2020
<p>Forest-grassland ecotone (FGE) has essential ecological and economic value. Unfortunately, it is impacted greatly by environmental changes and anthropogenic disturbance, and is considered one of the most severely threatened biomes in China. To protect Chinese FGE, identifying its exact boundary and exploring its landscape structure dynamic are badly needed, especially on nationwide scale at one-year temporal resolution. Here, we mapped the annual FGE distribution of China from 1990 to 2020, investigated its changing trends of area, location and landscape patterns, and revealed the underlying driving factors. Our results showed that FGE area over the 31 years totaled 1,011,870 km2, covering about 10.54% of China's land. The FGE area first increased from 1990 and peaked in 1999, and then kept decreasing until 2020. The FGE gravity center has moved accumulatively 590.15 km over the 31 years, with the net moving distance of 228.76 km southwestward. From 1990 to 2020, forest area increased continuously while grassland and cropland area decreased, but these three landscape types had been dominating the FGE. The increase in forest area was largely converted from grassland. The decline in grassland mainly resulted from its conversion into cropland and forest. Meanwhile, the conversion of cropland to grassland supplemented grassland loss to a certain extent. At landscape level, the total area with decreased fragmentation is larger than that with increased fragmentation. Returning Farmland to Grassland Project and land reclamation were primary drivers for changes of fragmentation in the northern and middle part of the FGE, while temperature and precipitation were primary drivers in southern part. Our results will improve the understanding into the dynamic trends of distribution and pattern of FGE at nationwide scale, and thus help to optimize the designing of ecological projects and protective schemes for FGE as a unique and integral biome.</p>

How do children and adolescents experience healthcare professionals? Scoping review and interpretive synthesis
<p class="MsoPlainText"><strong>Objective</strong></p> <p class="MsoPlainText">Explore children's and adolescents' (CADs') lived experiences of healthcare professionals (HCPs).</p> <p class="MsoPlainText"><strong>Eligibility criteria</strong></p> <p class="MsoPlainText">Research articles containing direct first-person quotations by CADs (aged 0-18 years inclusive) describing how they experienced HCPs.</p> <p class="MsoPlainText">Scoping review methodology provided a six-step framework to, first, identify and organise existing evidence. Interpretive phenomenology provided methodological principles for, second, an interpretive synthesis of the life-worlds of CADs receiving healthcare, as represented by verbatim accounts of their experiences. Five key databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL Plus, and Web of Science), from inception through to January 2019, reference lists, and opportunistically identified publications. Tabulation of study characteristics, contextual information, and verbatim extraction of all 'relevant' (as defined above) direct quotations. Analysis of basic scope of the evidence-base. The research team worked reflexively and collaboratively to interpret the qualitative data and construct a synthesis of children's experiences. To consolidate and elaborate the interpretation, we held two focus groups with CAD inpatients in a children's hospital. 669 quotations from 99 studies described CADs' experiences of HCPs. Favourable experiences were of forming trusting relationships and being involved in healthcare discussions and decisions; less favourable experiences were of not relating to or being unable to trust HCPs and/or being excluded from conversations about them. HCPs fostered trusting relationships by being personable, wise, sincere, and relatable. HCPs made CADs feel involved by including them in conversations, explaining medical information, and listening to CADs' wider needs and preferences.These findings strengthen the case for making CADs partners in healthcare despite their youth. We propose that a criterion for high-quality child-centred healthcare should be that HCPs communicate in ways that engender trust and involvement.</p>
2017 Microbial Ecology of the Surface Ocean - SCOPE, Water Column Data
<p>This dataset consists of samples taken at various depths in the water column from niskin bottles attached to a CTD rosette on the MESO-SCOPE cruise in 2017. Mesoscale eddies affect the variability of ocean ecosystems through different dynamics, but an exhaustive description of their influence on the plankton community is still missing, partly due to the complex physical-biological interaction taking place inside the eddies. One of the most well known effects of mesoscale eddies is the vertical displacement of water in their interior due to the geostrophic balance with the eddy circular motion. Since eddies of different polarity displace water in opposite directions, their impact on pelagic ecosystems is postulated to be very different. Based on this information, one of the objectives of the MESO-SCOPE expedition was to study a mesoscale dipole, i.e. a system composed of adjacent cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies. The MESO-SCOPE (Microbial Ecology of the Surface Ocean - Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology) expedition collected oceanographic observations in the region north of the Hawaiian Islands with the aim of identifying the impact of mesoscale eddies on the ecosystem of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The expedition was funded by the Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE) and hosted on the research vessel Kilo Moana between June 26 and July 15 2017, leaving from and returning to the port of Honolulu. Scientists from eight countries, representing eleven SCOPE laboratories, participated in the MESO-SCOPE expedition and contributed their expertise in research areas as ocean biogeochemistry, molecular biology, bio-optics, plankton taxonomy, microbiology, and ecology.</p>
2018 SCOPE Falkor Cruise Water Column Data
<p>This dataset consists of samples collected from various depths in the water column using niskin bottles attached to a CTD rosette on the 2018 SCOPE-Falkor cruise. The 2018 SCOPE-Falkor Cruise was built on the observations of the SCOPE expeditions conducted during 2015-2017 by looking at diel variability associated with the deep chlorophyll maximum and quantifying the impact of mesoscale eddies on the ecology and functioning of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. A unique aspect to the expedition was the use of Long-Range Autonomous Underwater Vehicles which were integrated into the science operations in conjunction with other oceanographic equipment. The majority of the expedition was located in a cyclonic eddy to the north of the island of Molokai. The reason for selecting a cyclonic eddy was to better understand the microbial community structure and dynamics associated with the deep chlorophyll maximum in an eddy with negative sea level anomaly. The deep chlorophyll maximum is uplifted by 20 to 40 m in a cyclonic eddy compared to its typical position in the water-column. The expedition was split into two legs in order to facilitate both engineering and scientific research objectives. After sampling a cyclonic eddy during 14 March to 4 April, 2018, the expedition sampled a large anticyclonic eddy to the northwest in order to augment our increasing understanding of microbial biogeochemistry in eddies with contrasting polarity. During the cruise, the Schmidt Ocean Institute R/V Falkor deployed two Long Range Underwater Vehicles that autonomously tracked and sampled the chlorophyll maximum layer, two Seagliders, a Waveglider, a Wirewalker, and free-drifting sediment trap arrays. </p>

2019 SCOPE Gradients, Water Column Data
<p>This dataset is from the Gradients 3 cruise (KM1906) conducted April 10- April 29, 2019 in the North Pacific Ocean. CTD/rosette profiles were taken down to 1000 meters and samples were collected from niskin bottles attached to the CTD and used to generate concentrations of oxygen, inorganic nutrients, and pigment concentrations. Temperature and salinity were derived from CTD sensors. Details on methods used are available at https://hahana.soest.hawaii.edu/hot/methods/chl.html. The Gradients 3 cruise is a component of the SCOPE-Gradients program (http://scope.soest.hawaii.edu/data/gradients/gradients.html) and was designed to test conceptual and mathematical models of biogeochemical organization across transition zones between different ecosystems.</p>
Excel data coding file for child welfare reform scoping review
<p><span>While there have been ongoing calls to reform child welfare so that it better meets children's and families' needs,</span> <span>to date there have been no comprehensive summaries of child welfare reform strategies. For this systematic scoping review, we summarized authors' recommendations for improving child welfare. We conducted a systematic search (2010 to 2021) and included published reviews that addressed authors' recommendations for improving child welfare for children, youth, and families coming into contact with child welfare in high-income countries. A total of 4,758 records was identified by the systematic search, 685 full-text articles were screened for eligibility, and 433 reviews were found to be eligible for this scoping review. Reviews were theoretically divided, with some review authors arguing for reform efforts at the macro level (e.g., addressing poverty) and others arguing for reform efforts at the practice level (e.g., implementing evidence-based parenting programs). Reform efforts across socioecological levels were summarized in this scoping review. An important next step is to formulate what policy solutions are likely to lead to the greatest improvement in safety and well-being for children and families involved in child welfare. </span></p>
