MongoDB database dump for the analysis of the current sustainability state of research software
<p>This data set is the MongoDB dump (bson files) of the data created and analyzed with the rsps framework. In the first step, a research subject is assigned to the research software repositories. Afterwards, the current sustainability state is evaluated. The data set comprises the following six bson files:</p> <p><strong>repositories: </strong>metadata, received from the GitHub REST API, for repositories containing the search terms "doi+10" or "doi+10+in:readme", additional information are the request date, the contained search term, and the repository hosting service, in this case for all repositories "github". For repositories the Readme files are available.</p> <p><strong>publications:</strong> metadata of publications, published on arXiv and ACM, that contain the search term "github.com".</p> <p><strong>rs_repositories:</strong> research software candidates containing a DOI or that are referenced by the publications contained in the publications data set.</p> <p><strong>rs_artifacts: </strong>research software artifacts that are referenced in the harvested GitHub repositories by a DOI and the harvested publications.</p> <p><strong>publication_subjects:</strong> All Science Journal Classification (ASJC) of Scopus combined with the Scopus source list and Scopus book title list (https://www.scopus.com/home.uri)</p> <p><strong>arxiv_subjects:</strong> arXiv taxonomy complemented with the ASJC research subject.</p> <p> </p>
Resilient and sustainable Permeable Pavements For urban Flood Mitigation
<p>Permeable pavements are more sustainable option towards climate change as they maintain the hydrological cycle. However, they suffer from problems such as lower strength and integrity. In this project, this issue is addressed in three main stages: a. development of high viscosity bitumen; b. evaluating different types of additives to be used in porous asphalt mixtures (surface course of permeable pavements); c. Development of a multi-criteria tool to implement the permeable pavement system using GIS software. </p>
Description of tools for the sustainability assessment of farms and farming systems
<p><strong>The “summary” table shows the papers and names of the tools and the link to the main publication as well as the use of the paper in each part of the analysis. We presented the variables for all the methods in a table called “method” with the result of the classification. In the table “dimension”, we presented the extraction of the dimension of sustainability and classification of methods. We did the same for the “themes” with a colour that we used for providing the descriptive statistics on the number of themes per dimension. We used three tables for each indicator that present the name of the indicator as extracted in the publication.</strong></p>

<p>This data set includes the materials required to reproduce the figures and tables presented in the study: "A 21<sup>st</sup> Century Warming Threshold for Sustained Greenland Ice Sheet Mass Loss". In spite of several recent warm summers with high melt rates, SMB < 0 has not been reached since at least the year 1958. Here we dynamically and statistically downscale the outputs of an Earth system model to 1 km resolution to infer that a Greenland near-surface atmospheric warming of 4.5 ± 0.3 °C—relative to pre-industrial—is required for GrIS SMB to become persistently negative. Climate models from CMIP5 and CMIP6 translate this regional temperature change to a global warming threshold of 2.7 ± 0.2 °C. Under a high-end warming scenario, this threshold may be reached around 2055, while for a strong mitigation scenario it will likely not be passed."</p>

Snow flies self-amputate freezing limbs to sustain behavior at sub-zero temperatures
<p><span>All living things are profoundly affected by temperature. In spite of the thermodynamic constraints on biology, some animals have evolved to live and move in extremely cold environments. Here, we investigate behavioral mechanisms of cold tolerance in the snow fly (<em>Chionea</em> spp.), a flightless crane fly that is active throughout the winter in boreal and alpine environments of the northern hemisphere. Using thermal imaging, we show that adult snow flies maintain the ability to walk down to an average body temperature of -7 °C. At this supercooling limit, ice crystallization occurs within the snow fly's hemolymph and rapidly spreads throughout the body, resulting in death. However, we discovered that snow flies frequently survive freezing by rapidly amputating legs before ice crystallization can spread to their vital organs. Self-amputation of freezing limbs is a last-ditch tactic to prolong survival in frigid conditions that few animals can endure. Understanding the extreme physiology and behavior of snow insects is important at this moment when the alpine ecosystems they inhabit are rapidly changing due to anthropogenic climate change.</span></p>

Data from: Comparison of pooled semen insemination and single colony insemination as sustainable honeybee breeding strategies
<p>Instrumental insemination of honeybees allows for two opposing breeding strategies. In single colony insemination (SCI), all drones to inseminate a queen are taken from one colony. In pooled semen insemination (PSI), sperm of many genetically diverse drones is mixed and queens are fertilised from the resulting drone pool. While SCI allows for maximum pedigree control, proponents of PSI claim to reduce inbreeding and maintain genetic variance. Using stochastic simulation studies, we compared genetic progress and inbreeding rates in small honeybee populations under SCI and PSI. Four different selection criteria were covered: estimated breeding values (EBV), phenotypes, true breeding values (TBV), and random selection. Under EBV-based truncation selection, SCI yielded 9.0% to 44.4% higher genetic gain than PSI, but had vastly increased inbreeding rates. Under phenotypical or TBV selection, the gap between SCI and PSI in terms of genetic progress narrowed. Throughout, PSI yielded lower inbreeding rates than SCI, but the differences were only substantial under EBV truncation selection. As a result, PSI did not appear as a viable breeding strategy due to its incompatibility with modern methods of genetic evaluation. Instead, SCI is to be preferred but instead of strict truncation selection, strategies to avoid inbreeding need to be installed.</p>
Increasing sustainability in palaeoproteomics by optimizing digestion times for large-scale archaeological bone analyses
<p>Palaeoproteomic analysis of skeletal proteomes is used to provide taxonomic identifications for an increasing number of archaeological specimens. The success rate depends on a range of taphonomic factors and differences in the extraction protocols employed. By analyzing 12 archaeological bone specimens from two archaeological sites, we demonstrate that reducing digestion duration from 18 to 3 hours has no measurable impact on the obtained taxonomic identifications. Peptide marker recovery, COL1 sequence coverage, or proteome complexity are also not significantly impacted. Although we observe minor differences in sequence coverage and glutamine deamidation, these are not consistent across our dataset. A 6-fold reduction in digestion time reduces electricity consumption, and therefore CO<sub>2</sub> emission intensities. We furthermore demonstrate that working in 96-well plates further reduces electricity consumption by 60%, in comparison to individual microtubes. Reducing digestion time therefore has no impact on the taxonomic identifications, while reducing the environmental impact of palaeoproteomic projects.</p>

The subfolders “3.outputs_main” and "4.outputs_displacement" contains all graphs and tables generated by the microsynth package. Please note that running the analysis will take several hours on most computer systems.</p> <p>The Microsoft Excel file displays the results of all models conducted for this analysis. Formalizing Objectives and Criteria for Urban Agriculture Sustainability with a Participatory Approach
<p>The last few years have seen an exponential development of urban agriculture projects within global North countries, especially professional intra-urban farms which are professional forms of agriculture located within densely settled areas of city. Such projects aim to cope with the challenge of sustainable urban development and today the sustainability of the projects is questioned. To date, no set of criteria has been designed to specifically assess the environmental, social and economic sustainability of these farms at the farm scale. Our study aims to identify sustainability objectives and criteria applicable to professional intra-urban farms. It relies on a participatory approach involving various stakeholders of the French urban agriculture sector comprising an initial focus group, online surveys and interviews. We obtained a set of six objectives related to environmental impacts, link to the city, economic and ethical meaning, food and environmental education, consumer/producer connection and socio-territorial services. In addition, 21 criteria split between agro-environmental, socio-territorial and economic dimensions were identified to reach these objectives. Overall, agro-environmental and socio-territorial criteria were assessed as more important than economic criteria, whereas food production was not mentioned. Differences were identified between urban farmers and decision makers, highlighting that decision makers were more focused on projects' external sustainability. They also pay attention to the urban farmer agricultural background, suggesting that they rely on urban farmers to ensure the internal sustainability of the farm. Based on our results, indicators could be designed to measure the sustainability criteria identified, and to allow the sustainability assessment of intra-urban farms.</p>
