File names and descriptions are as follows:

hysteresis.mat: A MATLAB file that contains WRF output from the hysteresis test used to create Figure 5 of the paper. The variable names should be straightforward to someone familiar with WRF. (Full WRF output was not saved for these runs.)

input_soil: surface initial conditions for WRF SCM, same for all experiments

input_sounding: initial sounding, same for all experiments

main_fls1: a WTG SST-ramping experiment showing fLS→1 as described in the paper.

main_rce_ramp: a SST-ramping experiment without the weak temperature gradient approximation

namelist.input.rce: the namelist input file for the "rce_run" experiment

namelist.input.wtg: the namelist input files for the "wtg_ramp_run1" experiment

rce_run: the main RCE experiment used to create the background WTG profile for the wtg_ramp_run1 experiment and the wtg_noramp experiment

wtg_noramp: a 180-day experiment with WTG but no ramping, for comparison

wtg_ramp_run1: the main WTG ramping experiment showing the abrupt transitions

Sensitivity of atmospheric river vapor transport and precipitation to uniform sea-surface temperature increases

This is the companion data for the manuscript of the same title, originally submitted to JGR: Atmospheres on 02/08/2020 and resubmitted on 06/30/2020. Specifically, this dataset corresponds to the resubmitted version. Note that the only change is the addition of code example to generate kernel density estimates of Hadley cell edge, subtropical jet, and eddy-driven jet positions.

modelParameters: this folder contains the scripts I ran on NERSC Cori in 2019 to initialize the CESM2.0/CAM5 model runs.

qobs_script_newcase.sh: creates all cases, for the Baseline as well as the +xK SST runs

docn_comp_mod.F90: original CAM5 aquaplanet SST distributions; "QOBS" is used for my "Baseline" experiments

plusxK_docn_comp_mod.F90: modified SST distributions, for x=(2,4,6); these are simply uniform additions to the QOBS SST distributions

Macros.make & env_mach_specific.xml: configuration files to run CESM2.0 on Cori at the time

user_nl_cam: namelist for CAM5; specifies some model run parameters as well as output variables.

detectionParameters: this folder contains the scripts I ran on NERSC Cori in 2019 to detect tropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers. Use this code for reference purposes only (i.e., to see which parameters were used to detect ARs or TCs). It will not run as-is.

All other subfolders provide working examples of code used to generate figures (all in Jupyter notebooks) for the manuscript; folder names are descriptive.

Unfortunately, model output was large (~12 TB). Hence, I only provide mean data, used directly to generate figures, in this repository. All model output are archived on tape at NERSC.

For more details, refer to the manuscript, or contact me (eelliott@ucdavis.edu).

Atmospheric fields and simulated sub-milllimetre brightness temperatures for five case studies using the FAAM atmospheric research aircraft

This dataset contains atmospheric fields, sensor positions and simulated sub-millimetre brightness temperatures for five cloudy case studies observed using the UK's BAe-146-301 (FAAM) atmospheric research aircraft.

The 3-dimensional atmospheric fields are taken from the Met Office Unified Model and give the atmospheric state corresponding to the time of high-altitude aircraft runs. They consist of pressure, temperature, height, water vapour and hydrometeor mass concentrations and are provided in a format suitable for use with the ARTS radiative transfer model.

The configurations required to run the ARTS radiative transfer model to simulate observations from the MARSS and ISMAR radiometers on board the aircraft are provided, as well as the output brightness temperatures using scattering properties for different ice particle habits from the ARTS database.

Effects of atmospheric attenuation on lightning spectrum

Spectrum carries important information reflecting atomic and molecular processes inside light source. Accurate spectral diagnosis is of vital significance in revealing microscopic physical mechanism of lightning discharge process. Aimed at the problems of atmospheric attenuation in long-distance lightning spectrum observations, considering the influence of atmospheric attenuation, grating efficiency and camera response on the observed spectrum, the spectral correction is carried out in this work. Based on the restored spectrum, the temperature of core current-carrying channel and the mean temperature of the luminous channel were calculated respectively. The result showed that the temperature of core current-carrying channel at initial stage of return stroke could reach up to 40000-45000 K, which was about 15000 K higher than the value directly obtained from observed spectrum. In addition, there is a steep temperature gradient between the core current-carrying channel and its peripheral luminous channel. This work can provide more precise parameters for further quantitative investigation on physical characteristic of lightning channel, and it also has application value for improving the spectral diagnostic techniques on celestial body and other natural luminous process.
