Data from: Genotyping-in-Thousands by sequencing panel development and application to inform kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) fisheries management at multiple scales

<p>The ability to differentiate life history variants is vital for estimating fisheries management parameters, yet traditional survey methods can be inaccurate in mixed-stock fisheries. Such is the case for kokanee, the resident freshwater form of sockeye salmon (<i>Oncorhynchus nerka</i>), which exhibits various reproductive ecotypes (stream-, shore-, deep-spawning) that co-occur with each other and/or anadromous <i>O. nerka</i> in some systems across their pan-Pacific distribution. Here, we developed a multi-purpose Genotyping-in-Thousands by sequencing (GT-seq) panel of 288 targeted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to enable accurate kokanee stock identification by geographic basin, migratory form, and reproductive ecotype across British Columbia, Canada. The GT-seq panel exhibited high self-assignment accuracy (93.3%) and perfect assignment of individuals not included in the baseline to their geographic basin, migratory form, and reproductive ecotype of origin. The GT-seq panel was subsequently applied to Wood Lake, a valuable mixed-stock fishery, revealing high concordance (&gt;98%) with previous assignments to ecotype using microsatellites and TaqMan<span> </span>SNP genotyping assays, while improving resolution, extending a long-term time-series, and demonstrating the scalability of this approach for this system and others.</p>

Data from: The prediction of adaptive evolution: empirical application of the secondary theorem of selection and comparison to the breeder's equation

Adaptive evolution occurs when fitness covaries with genetic merit for a trait (or traits). The breeder's equation (BE), in both its univariate and multivariate forms, allows us to predict this process by combining estimates of selection on phenotype with estimates of genetic (co)variation. However, predictions are only valid if all factors causal for trait-fitness covariance are measured. While this requirement will rarely (if ever) be met in practice, it can be avoided by applying Robertson's secondary theorem of selection (STS). The STS predicts evolution by directly estimating the genetic basis of trait-fitness covariation with out any explicit model of selection. Here we apply the BE and STS to four morphological traits measured in Soay sheep (Ovis aries) from St. Kilda. Despite apparently positive selection on heritable size traits, sheep are not getting larger. However, while the BE predicts increasing size the STS does not, a discrepancy that suggests unmeasured factors are upwardly biasing our estimates of selection on phenotype. We suggest this is likely to be a general issue, and that wider application of the STS could offer at least a partial resolution to the common discrepancy between naive expectations and observed trait dynamics in natural populations.

Data from: Validity, applicability and universality of fractal scaling laws for natural lakes

<p><span>We conducted a systematic investigation on the validity, applicability and universality of the fractal scaling relationships for natural lakes within China. Hydro-climatic zones from the Hydrological regionalization of China were taken as the statistical units for all the analyses. Lake size and hydrological parameters used in the analyses are from the HydroLAKES database. To test the validity of the fractal scaling relationships between lake properties, power law functions were fitted to these properties. To examine the effects of topographical relief on the power law size distribution, regional degree of topographical relief  was calculated for each zone based on ASTER GDEM2. To explore the potential impacts of human activities on the applicability of power law size distribution, Human modification index data was jointly analyzed with the power law distribution of lake size.</span></p>
