FIGURE 3 in The cost of gold: Mercury contamination of fishes in a Neotropical river food web

FIGURE 3 | Sampling locations on the middle Mazaruni River: A. Main channel of the upper Eping River a small, black water tributary of the Mazaruni River. This river appeared more pristine and less impacted by gold mining activities; B. Sandy, shallow habitat sampled in middle channel of the upper Eping River; C. A gold dredge in the middle of the Kurupung River, on the right side is evidence of soil removal that resulted from mining activities; D. Deforestation (to establish mining stations) along the Kurupung River upstream, left bank from the confluence with the Mazaruni River; E-F. Main channel of the Mazaruni River at Olive Creek. At this location, the main channel of Mazaruni River is highly impacted by gold mining activities and gold dredges and 'tailing' beaches are commonly observed; G-H. The main channel of the lower Puterang River before the confluence with the Mazaruni River. At these locations, the Puterang River carries down heavily silted sediments that are spilled into the Mazaruni River.

Forensic examination of Wuhan Institute of Virology COVID-19 patient specimens from December 2019 reveals gross contamination of the laboratory, including undisclosed research on a lethal BSL-4 pathogen

A Zenodo pre-print entitled, “CONTAMINATION OR VACCINE RESEARCH? RNA Sequencing data of early COVID-19 patient samples show abnormal presence of vectorized H7N9 hemagglutinin segment” has been published. In the paper, a forensic examination of the sequencing data from five COVID-19 bronchial lavage patient specimens reveals that the laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) was contaminated with a wide range of viruses, including the Nipah virus, a BSL-4 pathogen with a lethality of 50% to 92%. A video summary of the paper can be found here.

The highlights of the paper are:

Five patient specimens were sequenced by the WIV in December 2019 and were part of an early report on SARS-CoV-2 published by Dr. Zhengli Shi and colleagues (Nature 579, 270–273 (2020). This paper has been viewed over one million times, making it one of the most highly read paper on the pandemic virus.

The most abundant contaminant is an undisclosed H7N9 influenza vaccine, which in one specimen is over six-times as abundant as SARS-CoV-2.

The Nipah virus gene sequences were found in infectious cloning vectors of the type used for genetic manipulation.

Nineteen other contaminants, including Japanese Encephalitis virus, HIV, human T-cell leukemia virus, and hepatitis delta virus were found.

It is important to investigate why the Wuhan Institute of Virology was extensively contaminated in December 2019 as well as learn more about the undisclosed Influenza Vaccine research and Nipah virus cloning experiments.

The Zenodo pre-print can be found here: https://zenodo.org/record/5067706#.YPtyyI4zbOg

Data set for anthropogenic contaminants in ice cores (Dome C - Antarctica)

The produced dataset (in MS Excel format) contains depth profile concentrations of a 16.5 m deep shallow core (covering approx. 200 years before present) drilled at the plateau site of Dome C, East Antarctica (75°06' South Latitude, 123°21' East Longitude), during the 23rd Italian Antarctic Expedition.

The concentrations of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Benzo[k]fluoranthene (BKF) and of Organochlorinated Pesticides (OCP) expressed as three single compounds (PeCB, ALD and 44D) and total (Σ51 Pesticides) are given in ng L-1.

The ice core covers a time interval, which includes periods before and after the introduction of these Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in commercial mixtures, as well as periods before the construction of research station facilities. However, in the top samples of the ice core, detected concentrations of analytes are ascribable to industrial anthropogenic activities.

Contamination from microplastics and other anthropogenic particles in the digestive tracts of the commercial species Engraulis encrasicolus and Sardina pilchardus

Abstract

Fragments of microplastics (< 5mm) found in commercial species of fish, crustaceans, and bivalves, are an issue of global concern. The bioaccumulation of microplastics and other anthropogenic particles in different levels of the food web may provoke unwanted impacts on marine ecosystems and cause pernicious effects on human health. Here, we study the presence of anthropogenic particles and the fraction of microplastics in the target organs of two representative commercial fish species in Spain; the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and the European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus). The individuals were sampled along the continental shelf of the Gulf of Cádiz, from the Bay of Cádiz to Cape Santa Maria. The isolation of the microplastics (MPs) was carried out with a complete alkaline-oxidant organic digestion (KOH-H2O2) of the digestive tract, including both the contents ingested and the muscle tissues. Anthropogenic particles were found in all individuals of both species with an average of 8.94 ± 5.11 items·ind-1. Fibres made up 93 % of the items while fragments and films were represented by the remaining 7 %. The average size of the anthropogenic particles was 0.89 ± 0.82 mm. In addition to the fragment and film particles identified as microplastics, 29 % of the fibres were estimated to be microplastics by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The main polymer found in both species was nylon. No significant correlation was found between the abundance and size of anthropogenic particles ingested and individual size or other body variables. The analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) and the distanced-based multiple linear regression model showed a high homogeneity in anthropogenic particle contamination in both species throughout the study area along the continental shelf of the Gulf of Cádiz.

Post-remediation evaluation of contaminated site using geophysical methods: EMI

For the EMI measurements, a ground conductivity meter EM38-MK2 (Geonics) was used. Based on the measurements carried out on two coil spacings every 0.5 m and 1 m in horizontal (H-mode) and vertical dipole mode (V-mode), a component reflecting the electrical conductivity was obtained at three effective depth ranges approx. 0.37 m and 0.75 m for H-mode, 0.75 m and 1.5 m for V-mode. Recognition of the value of electrical conductivity was obtained in a grid of 50 x 50 m

This research was funded by National Science Centre, Poland MINIATURA-5 2021/05/X/ST10/00673 “Post-remediation evaluation of contaminated site using geophysical methods”
