Navigating agricultural landscapes: Responses of critically endangered giant tortoises to farmland vegetation and infrastructure
<p><strong>Context</strong>: Interactions between wildlife and anthropogenic infrastructure, such as roads, fences, and dams, can influence wildlife movement, and potentially cause human-wildlife conflict. In the Galapagos archipelago, two species of critically endangered giant tortoise encounter infrastructure and human-modified vegetation in farms, which could influence movement choices.</p> <p><strong>Objectives</strong>: We investigated factors influencing tortoise movement and habitat selection in the agricultural landscape of Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We examined the movement of 27 tortoises collected using GPS tracking between 2014 and 2020, in relation to the location of vegetation, ponds, fences, and roads.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We found that tortoises preferred pasture over native vegetation, but there was little difference among their preferences for native vegetation, crops, or invasive vegetation. Tortoises also travelled slower in pasture, and faster in invasive vegetation, compared to crops and native vegetation. Tortoises were more likely to be found closer to ponds than predicted by chance. Our results indicated that most fences were porous to tortoises, with limited impact on their movement. Tortoises were more likely to use areas near roads with low-traffic.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: Pastures and ponds are important habitats for tortoises in farms and are likely to be used preferentially by tortoises. Overall, fences and roads did not strongly obstruct tortoise movements, however, this may lead to potential injury to tortoises on roads and property damage for farmers. To best identify priority areas for managing wildlife on farms, we recommend evaluating the combined effects of multiple anthropogenic landscape features on wildlife movements.</p>
Data from: Navigating the scales of diversity in subtropical and coastal fish assemblages ascertained by eDNA and visual surveys
<p>Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding emerges as a powerful method, allowing a more exhaustive investigation of fish fauna than any other methods. Yet, the general use of eDNA as a replacement of traditional methods such as visual surveys or physical sampling remains debatable. Therefore, a prior understanding of eDNA's spatial resolution is necessary. This study aimed to compare the assessments of fish diversity at three spatial scales by eDNA, underwater visual census (UVC), and diver-operated video (DOV) surveys across 21 reef sites in northern Taiwan. The specific objectives were to explore the regional species pool (γ-diversity), reveal spatial patterns of fish assemblages (β-diversity), and disentangle the relationships between fish assemblages and benthic composition (α-diversity). At the γ-diversity level, a total of 438 marine fish species were detected across methods. eDNA exhibits an extraordinary power to explore the regional species pool given sufficient replication, a power which is unachievable by DOV and UVC. At the β-diversity level, all the methods successfully revealed the same spatial patterns of beta diversity and the distance decay of similarity in fish assemblages. At the α-diversity level, none of the methods is capable of investigating the entire resident fish fauna, but visual surveys are more suitable for scrutinizing interactions between fish and benthos. Instead of undiscriminatingly recommending a combination of eDNA with traditional survey methods, we suggest implementing specific surveys in accordance with the ecological questions of interest.</p>

Building bridges: mapping diverse classifications for a seamless user navigation experience
<p>This paper describes a BBC project to unify Archive and Production workspaces, during<br> which numerous issues with managing different types of metadata and Knowledge Organi-<br> sation Systems (KOSs) were encountered. Integrating diverse content silos requires bringing<br> together not simply the assets, but also the metadata used to manage those assets. The paper<br> summarises the theoretical background to the project, the BBC’s ‘information ecosystem’,<br> and the user research and requirements-gathering exercises undertaken.<br> Much work on developing metadata crosswalks has been at the heading or label level, and<br> not based on semantic analysis of the content of the labelling or description. However, such<br> semantic analysis needs to be undertaken when mapping diverse taxonomies, thesauri, and<br> keyword lists and, in practice, often needs to balance preservation of local or specialised<br> terminology with accessibility for general users. Just as metadata about content permits the<br> organization of that content, so metadata about metadata (parametadata, or meta-metadata)<br> permits the organization of metadata, enabling end users to make informed browse and<br> navigation choices. Increasingly, in order to integrate content, different KOSs, such as<br> taxonomies and ontologies, need to be related.<br> The paper concludes by summarising the ways in which problems that arose during the<br> integration project were resolved, and how policies for managing parametadata, subjective<br> metadata, and semantic-level mapping were developed.</p>

We have systematically collected information about the nature and consequences of societal crisis in over 150 cases covering different regions in the world in the preindustrial period. An astronomical compendium is a mathematical instrument which has a range of astronomical functions incorporated into a single small device. As a catch-all term there is no standard list of functional elements, but sundials, compasses, calendars, maps, astrolabes, quadrants and various tables are often to be found. Neither is there a standard form for the resulting instrument; astronomical compendia are found in many shapes and formats, whether rectangular, circular, oval or octagonal, and are sometimes constructed to mimic other artefacts, such as books, with covers and leaves.
