Desiccation stress acts as cause as well as cost of dispersal in Drosophila melanogaster
<p>Environmental stress is one of the important causes of biological dispersal. At the same time, the process of dispersal itself can incur and/or increase susceptibility to stress for the dispersing individuals. Therefore, in principle, stress can serve as both a cause and a cost of dispersal. We studied these potentially contrasting roles of a key environmental stress (desiccation) using Drosophila melanogaster. By modulating water and rest availability, we asked whether: (a) dispersers are individuals that are more susceptible to desiccation stress, (b) dispersers pay a cost in terms of reduced resistance to desiccation stress, (c) dispersal evolution alters the desiccation cost of dispersal, and (d) females pay a reproductive cost of dispersal. We found that desiccation was a clear cause of dispersal in both sexes, as both male and female dispersal propensity increased with increasing duration of desiccation. However, the desiccation cost of dispersal was male-biased, a trend unaffected by dispersal evolution. Instead, females paid a fecundity cost of dispersal. We discuss the complex relationship between desiccation and dispersal, which can lead to both positive and negative associations. Furthermore, the sex differences highlighted here may translate into differences in movement patterns, thereby giving rise to sex-biased dispersal patterns.</p>
Perceived academic stress, hair and saliva cortisol concentrations, and their relationship with anthropometric measures associated with obesity in first-year medical students.
<p>Cortisol plays an important role between stress, weight gain, and the development of obesity. Therefore, we investigated the association between stress, eating behavior, cortisol, and anthropometric measures related to obesity in a sample of medical students. We determined cortisol concentrations by ELISA and related it to self-reported stress, eating behavior, and anthropometric measurements throughout the academic period. We report an increase in hair cortisol, higher self-reported stress scores, and BMI mainly in females. Finally, we found evidence of positive associations between capillary cortisol and BMI. Also, eating behavior is affected by perceived stress mainly in females.</p> <p>In this database, we provide weight variables, BMI, psychometric tests, and hormonal determinations.</p> <p><br> You can see two sheets in the Excel file. Stress, Strain, and Temperature measurement data for AISI 301 and AISI 316 stainless steels from tension tests with a sudden increase of strain rate
<p>This publication comprise data obtained during a tension test where the strain rate was suddenly changed from 10<sup>-4</sup> s<sup>-1 </sup>to 1.3x10<sup>3 </sup>s<sup>-1</sup>. The sudden increase in strain rate was carried out at different amounts of plastic strain. The tests were carried out with a modified tension Split-Hopkinson Pressure bar device. The force was measured from the stress bars using strain gages, whereas the strain was measured using high speed photography and digital image correlation. The temperature was measured using high speed infrared imaging. The data is part of the original publication in Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials. Host-symbiont stress response to lack-of-sulfide in the giant ciliate mutualism
<p>The mutualism between the thioautotrophic bacterial ectosymbiont <em>Candidatus</em> Thiobius zoothamnicola and the giant ciliate <em>Zoothamnium niveum</em> thrives in a variety of shallow-water marine environments with highly fluctuating sulfide emissions. To persist over time, both partners must reproduce and ensure the transmission of symbionts before the sulfide stops, which enables carbon fixation of the symbiont and nourishment of the host. We experimentally investigated the response of this mutualism to depletion of sulfide. We found that colonies released some initially present but also newly produced macrozooids until death, but in fewer numbers than when exposed to sulfide. The symbionts on the colonies proliferated less without sulfide, and became larger and more rod-shaped than symbionts from freshly collected colonies that were exposed to sulfide and oxygen. The symbiotic monolayer was severely disturbed by growth of other microbes and loss of symbionts. We conclude that the response of both partners to the termination of sulfide emission was remarkably quick. The development and the release of swarmers continued until host died and thus this behavior contributed to the continuation of the association.</p>
Genome-wide analysis identified candidate variants and genes associated with heat stress adaptation in Egyptian sheep breeds
<p>The current study was conducted from 2009 to 2019 in three hot and dry agroecological zones in Egypt: Western Desert coastal zone, New Valley desert oasis, and hot-dry Upper Egypt. Within these zones, three local sheep breeds were studied: Barki (83 ewes), Wahati (55 ewes) and Saidi (68 ewes). During the study period, the animals exercised under natural heat stress (simulating summer grazing on poor pasture). Meteorological and physiological parameters were measured and recorded. The heat tolerance index of the animals was calculated to identify animals with high and low heat tolerance based on the animals' response to the five main physiological parameters (scale from 0 to 5). DNA samples were extracted for genomic analysis. The genetic diversity measurements showed a significant influence of breed and location on the populations. The influence of breed is more significant than that of location. The inbreeding analysis shows that the desert breeds (Wahati and Barki) have lower values than the urban breed (Saidi). The high rate of sub-clustering indicates the process of sub-population through inbreeding pressure. Wahati and Barki are very distinct breeds with strong identification, while Saidi breed has crosses with other breeds. The most significant SNPs associated with heat tolerance were found in MYO5A, PRKG1, GSTCD, and RTN1 genes (P < 0.0001). MYO5A had an effect of 0.74 on the trait heat tolerance in the studied population. It produces a protein that is widely distributed in the melanin-producing neural crest of the skin. Genetic association between genetic and phenotypic variations showed that OAR1 18300122.1, located in ST3GAL3, had the greatest positive effect on heat tolerance. GWAS analysis identified SNPs associated with heat tolerance in the PLCB1, STEAP3, KSR2, UNC13C , PEBP4, and GPAT2 genes.</p>
Lipogenesis mediated by OGR1 regulates metabolic adaptation to acid stress in cancer cells via autophagy
<p>Malignant tumors exhibit altered metabolism resulting in a highly acidic extracellular microenvironment. Here we show that cytoplasmic lipid droplet (LD) accumulation, indicative of a lipogenic phenotype is a cellular adaption to extracellular acidity. LD marker PLIN2, is strongly associated with poor overall survival in breast cancer patients. Acid-induced LD accumulation is triggered by activation of the acid-sensing GPCR, OGR1 expressed highly in breast tumors. OGR1 depletion inhibited acid induced lipid accumulation while activation by synthetic agonist triggered LD formation. Inhibition of OGR1 downstream signaling abrogated the lipogenic phenotype which could be rescued with OGR1 ectopic expression. OGR1 depleted cells showed growth inhibition under acidic growth conditions in vitro and tumor formation in vivo. Isotope tracing showed that the source of lipid precursors is primarily autophagy-derived ketogenic amino acids. OGR1 depleted cells were defective in endoplasmic reticulum stress response and autophagy, hence failed to accumulate LDs affecting survival under acidic stress.</p>
Food deprivation exposes sex-specific trade-offs between stress tolerance and lifespan in the copepod Tigriopus californicus
<p>Long life is standardly assumed to be associated with high stress tolerance. Previous work shows that the copepod <em>Tigriopus californicus</em> breaks this rule, with longer lifespan under benign conditions found in males, the sex with lower stress tolerance. Here we extended this previous work, raising animals from the same families in food-replete conditions until adulthood and then transferring them to food-limited conditions until all animals perished. As in previous work, survivorship under food-replete conditions favored males. However, under food deprivation lifespan strongly favored females in all crosses. Compared to benign conditions, average lifespan under nutritional stress was reduced by 47% in males but only 32% in females. Further, the sex-specific mitonuclear effects previously found under benign conditions were erased under food limited conditions. Results thus demonstrate that sex-specific lifespan, including mitonuclear interactions, are highly dependent on nutritional environment.</p>
Manhattan and QQ plots of GWAS on salt stress responses in root system architecture parameters of wild tomato (S. pimpinellifolium)
<p>The population of +/2 200 accessions of wild tomato was screened with the protocol described <a href="https://www.protocols.io/view/studying-root-system-architecture-changes-in-tomat-2mqgc5w">here</a> with the only exception that the plants were transferred 4 days after germination (rather than 3 - described in the protocol). The images were analyzed using the <a href="https://smartroot.github.io/">SmartRoot</a> for days 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 after transfer to treatment plates (0 or 100 mM NaCl, 1/4 MS, 0.5% sucrose, 0.1% MES, 1% Dashin agar). The data analysis was performed as described <a href="https://rpubs.com/mjulkowska/BIGpimp_RSA_salt">here</a>, while the pareto front calculations were done according to Chandrasekhar & Julkowska paper (<a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.08.12.456185v1">preprint here</a>). The GWAS was performed using the ASReml script similar to <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/tpj.15310">Awlia et al. (2021)</a>. The raw GWAS outputs can be found <a href="https://zenodo.org/badge/DOI/10.5281/zenodo.5856310.svg">here</a>. This dataset represents Manhattan plots and QQ plots made out of the data. </p>
Climatic history, constraints, and the plasticity of phytochemical traits under water stress
<p><span>Environmental stress can induce changes in organismal traits and in resulting intraspecific variation. The nature of such effects will depend on the plasticity of trait expression and on any ecological constraints to such expression. Plants can mitigate abiotic stress, like drought, by changing their chemistry, but the ability to induce costly metabolites may be under strong local selection and ecologically constrained. Here we asked whether climate at the seed source predicts plant chemical plasticity in response to water stress and what the consequences are for intraspecific variation in phytochemical traits. To this end, we used common gardens of two widespread species of western milkweed (<em>Asclepias fascicularis </em>and <em>Asclepias speciosa</em>)<em> </em>that had been collected from sites across an aridity gradient. Both species produce high concentrations of leaf flavonols, which are hypothesized to mitigate water stress by functioning as antioxidants. These compounds were found in higher constitutive concentrations in plants sourced from drier sites, and both species responded to water stress in the common garden by increasing leaf flavonol concentrations. Interestingly, flavonol plasticity was higher in plants sourced from wetter sites in <em>A. fascicularis</em>, with similar, but weaker, patterns in <em>A. speciosa</em>. These opposing patterns in constitutive and induced flavonol expression reduced the variation between populations in leaf flavonol concentrations under water stress. </span><span>These results suggest that</span><span> local adaptation in plants can </span><span>shape phytochemical strategies for water limitation but that the cost of metabolite production may ultimately limit the range of phytochemical variation.</span></p>

Database of the stress-strain state of the Nizhni-Kansk massif
<p>An open database of the stress-strain state of the Nizhnekansky massif is presented. It was obtained based on the results of research by the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the period 2010-2022. The database includes data of stress and strain fields obtained on the basis of mathematical modeling, GNSS measurements. The presented database is the basis for an open assessment of the geodynamic safety of the disposal of highly radioactive waste in granite-gneiss rocks of the Nizhnekansky massif.</p>

Stress placement in Stress-standard Serbo-Croatian (speakers from Bor, Niš, Zaječar)
<p>In order to obtain a good overview of the stress standard SC situation, we assembled a database of the 3000 most frequent verbs in the Serbian variety of standard Serbo-Croatian. For this purpose we used the web corpus srWac (Ljubešić & Klubička 2014).</p> <p>We asked four stress standard SC speakers (two from Niš, one from Bor and one from Zaječar) to pronounce one finite and one non-finite form of each verb. Functional assembly of tropical montane tree islands in the Atlantic Forest is shaped by stress-tolerance, bamboo-presence and facilitation
<p><strong>Aims</strong>: Amidst the Campos de Altitude (Highland Grasslands) in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, woody communities grow either clustered in tree islands or interspersed within the herbaceous matrix. The functional ecology, diversity and biotic processes shaping these plant communities are largely unstudied. We characterised the functional assembly and diversity of these tropical montane woody communities and investigated how they fit within Grime's CSR (C – competitor, S – stress-tolerant, R – ruderal) scheme, what functional trade-offs they exhibit and how traits and functional diversity vary in response to bamboo presence/absence.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: To characterize the functional composition of the community, we sampled five leaf traits and wood density along transects covering the woody communities both inside tree islands and outside (i.e. isolated woody plants in the grasslands community) . Then, we used Mann Whitney test, t-test and variation partitioning to determine the effects of inside vs outside tree island and bamboo presence on community weighted means, woody species diversity and functional diversity.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We found a general SC/S strategy with drought-related functional trade-offs. Woody plants in tree islands had more acquisitive traits than those within the grasslands. Trait variation was mostly taxonomically than spatially driven, and species composition varied between inside and outside tree islands. Leaf thickness, wood density and foliar water uptake were unrelated to CSR-strategies, suggesting independent trait dimensions and multiple drought-coping strategies within the predominant S-strategy. Islands with bamboo presence showed lower Simpson diversity, lower functional dispersion, lower foliar water uptake and greater leaf thickness than in tree islands without bamboo.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: The observed functional assembly hints towards large-scale environmental abiotic filtering shaping stress-tolerant community strategy, and small-scale biotic interactions driving small-scale trait variation. We recommend experimental studies with fire, facilitation treatments, eco-physiological and recruitment traits to elucidate on tree island expansion and communities response to climate change.</p>
Frictional Properties of Opalinus Clay: Influence of Humidity, Normal Stress and Grain-size on Frictional Stability
<p>We designed frictional experiments to characterize the effect exerted by humidity, grain size and normal stress on frictional behaviour of the Opalinus clay fault gouge. We explored a wide range of normal stresses, ranging from 5 to 70 MPa performing velocity up-steps from 1 to 300 μm/s and slide-hold-slide from 1 to 3000s. Our experiments confirms that the OPA clay is weak, with friction coefficients at steady-state of ~0.35 and ~0.41, for 100% RH and 25% RH experiments, respectively. The OPA clay is velocity strengthening over the entire range of applied normal stress. We observe a direct relationship between frictional parameter <em>(a-b)</em> and slip velocity up to 35 MPa where, from there on, <em>(a-b)</em> parameter seems to be velocity independent. As evidenced by the microstructural analysis, we suggest that this behaviour is due to the progressive transition with normal stress, from strain localization and grain size reduction to distributed deformation on well-developed phyllosilicate networks. The amount of relative humidity does not affect deformation mechanisms (i.e. localized or distributed), whereas decreases fault strength and increases fault stability. We hypothesize that this is due to a possible interplay of OPA clay swelling and lubrication, caused by the weakening of chemical bonds between phyllosilicate foliae. Notably, the initial grain size (< 63 µm or 63 < g.s. < 125 µm) does not affect either the frictional strength or stability, with similar values of dilation upon velocity up-step. Collectively, our mechanical and microstructural observations have allowed us to build a conceptual model that summarizes the main mechanical features of the OPA clay fault gouge. In the context of deep geological repositories (DGR), our results confirm that slow aseismic slip is the most likely slip behaviour for a fault gouge hosted in the OPA clay, with similar mineralogical composition and clay fabric as our samples. Beyond the context of deep geological repositories, this study has also implications for carbon capture and geological storage in the deep subsurface. The impact of stress and its influencing factors among dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kingdom of Bahrain
<p><strong><span>Background:</span></strong><span> It is well known that all medical professions are linked to work stress, including dentistry, which is seen as facing higher risk due to the nature of the job, especially the working conditions. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Objective:</strong> This study aimed to assess the impact of stress and its influencing factors among dentists during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bahrain.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span><strong>:</strong> A cross-sectional survey was designed to assess the impact of stress and its influencing factors among Bahraini dentists. A total of 306 participants were randomly selected from 1489 registered professionals in the NHRA (National Health Regulatory Authority Bahrain). In addition, an online survey was used to minimise face-to-face communication as well as to accommodate dental practitioners who work in private and government hospitals in Bahrain and a convenient sample of dentists was requested to participate in this study.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span><strong>:</strong> Out of 306 participants invited in the survey, only 253 responded, which was adequate for the study. Overall, the participants have reported moderate stress. All the variables of the study showed different effects, but the highest stressor with a strong correlation was "fear of social isolation "(FI) at the significance level of 0.01 (β= 0.393, t= 5.090, p < 0.05= (0.000) with </span> <span>= 0.201 above 0.15 and less than 0.35 which was considered as a moderate effect size approximately (20%), which strongly supported the hypothesis that researchers have proposed. Overall, the total effect for all stressors were (30 %) which was considered as a moderate effect size. All hypotheses were supported except BCP -> OUTCOME due to insufficient evidence at the insignificant level of 0.01 (β= -0.184, t=1.560, p > 0.05 = (0.060). whereas the R² values of independent variables were above 95% for the variance of dentists' outcome, which is considered an excellent fit to the data as evidenced by the squared multiple correlations (</span> <span>) values for the dependent variables.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions:</strong> </span><span>The study is unique based on its findings that reveal the impact of stress among dentists. Moreover, the results of this study may serve as guidance for future monitoring of dental practitioners' burnout, anxiety, and workload. Furthermore, it may provide supports in different aspects.</span></p>
Accelerated Stress Tests for Solid Oxide Cells via Artificial Aging of the Fuel Electrode
<p><strong>AD ASTRA: Data from Experiments for Artificial Aging of the Fuel Electrode in Solid Oxide Cells via Redox Cycling</strong></p> <p>One of the big hurdles towards fast deployment of Solid Oxide Cells (fuel cells or electrolyzers) is durability. Although intensive works are carried out for life time improvement, they meet a serious problem concerning long term electrochemical tests for accumulation of reliable data that may continue several years, which is unaffordable. A problem-solving approach is the introduction of Accelerated Stress Tests (AST) applying high levels of stress for a shorter period thus reducing the test time for degradation qualification.</p> <p>Since there are no definite criteria for the level of acceleration of a specific degradation phenomenon, the selection of aggravating conditions is a critical moment which is under studies in the FCH JU Project AD ASTRA (GA 825027).</p> <p>Herein we present data accumulated during the development of a procedure for artificial accelerated aging of the fuel electrode via redox cycling. They include electrochemical testing (current-voltage curves and impedance measurements) and microstructural characterization (SEM-BSE image analysis), as well as procedure for redox cycling.</p>
