Fig. 6 in Trichoplusia ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) survival, immune response, and gut bacteria changes afer exposure to Azadirachta indica (Sapindales: Meliaceae) volatiles
Fig. 6. Transcription of the 23S gene of Enterobacteria (428 bp) and ribosomal protein S5 gene (782 bp) from rRNA samples of Trichoplusia ni NL strain larval midguts, afer exposure to 10 g of neem leaves, determined by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). PCR product of RNA not subject- ed to RT-PCR was taken as a negative control. Lane 1, DNA ladder 100 bp; lane 2, PCR product of plasmid DNA with the Enterobacteria insert as positive control; lane 3, PCR products of the 23S gene of Enterobacteria and the ribosomal protein S5 gene of T. ni from unexposed larvae; lanes 4, 6, and 8, PCR of control RNA; lane 5, RT-PCR products in gut from VOC-exposed T. ni larva, showing both 23S and ribosomal protein S5 gene amplification (1st replication); lane 7, RT-PCR products in gut from VOC-exposed T. ni larva, showing both 23S and ribosomal protein S5 gene amplification (2nd replication).

Data from: De novo sequencing and assembly of Azadirachta indica fruit transcriptome
Azadirachta indica (neem) is a unique, versatile and important tree species. Many parts of the plant are traditionally used as pesticide, insecticide, fungicide and for other medicinal purposes. Azadirachta fruits and seeds, a good source of oil, are widely used for agriculturally important pest management. Neem oil and its derivatives also support multiple cottage industries in India. Past efforts have been mostly concentrated towards identifying, characterizing and synthesizing one of its principal components, i.e. azadirachtin from seed kernels. Despite diverse use of the neem plant, a modern drug-development programme which systematically exploits the therapeutic ability of Azadirachta fruits remains to be fully established. Next generation sequencing technology that helps decode genomes and transcriptomes has transformational impact on medicine, agriculture, bio-fuel and biodiversity studies. Here, we report sequencing, assembly and analysis of Azadirachta fruit transcriptome using next-generation sequencing technology. We believe that our study shall offer valuable insights towards realizing the larger vision of understanding the key medicinally active compounds and their pathways.

Biosynthesis, Characterization and Anti-dengue vector activity of Silver Nanoparticles prepared by Azadirachta indica and Citrullus colocynthis
<p><span>Here, we report biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous extracts of (i) <i>Azadirachta indica</i> leaves and (ii) <i>Citrullus colocynthis</i> fruit and their larvicidal activity against <i>Aedes aegypti.</i> The Uv-Vis spectroscopy absorption peaks occurred in range 412-416 nm for <i>A. indica</i> AgNPs and 416-431nm for <i>C. </i><i>colocynthis</i> AgNPs indicating the silver nature of prepared colloidal samples. The Scanning electron microscopy examination revealed the spherical morphology of both types of NPs with average size of 17±4 nm (<i>A. indica</i> AgNPs) and 26±5 nm (<i>C. </i><i>colocynthis</i> AgNPs). The x-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the face centred cubic (FCC) structure with crystallite size of 11±1 nm (<i>A. indica</i> AgNPs) and 15±1 nm (<i>C. </i><i>colocynthis</i> AgNPs) while characteristic peaks appearing in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated the attachment of different biomolecules on AgNPs.. The larvicidal activity at different concentrations of synthesized AgNPs (1-20 </span>mg/L<span>) and extracts (0.5 % - 1.5 %) against <i>Aedes aegypti</i> was examined for 24 h. A concentration dependent larvicidal potential of both types of AgNPs was observed. The LC50 values were found to be 0.3 mg/L and 1.25 mg/L for <i>C. colocynthis</i> AgNPs and <i>A. indica</i> AgNPs respectively. However, extracts did not exhibit any notable larvicidal activity.</span></p>
