GAN-based Synthetic VIIRS-like Image Generation over India

Monthly nighttime lights (NTL) can clearly depict an area's prevailing intra-year socio-economic dynamics. The Earth Observation Group at Colorado School of Mines provides monthly NTL products from the Day Night Band (DNB) sensor on board the Visible and Infrared Imaging Suite (VIIRS) satellite (April 2012 onwards) and from Operational Linescan System (OLS) sensor onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites (April 1992 onwards). In the current study, an attempt has been made to generate synthetic monthly VIIRS-like products of 1992-2012, using a deep learning-based image translation network. Initially, the defects of the 216 monthly DMSP images (1992-2013) were corrected to remove geometric errors, background noise, and radiometric errors. Correction on monthly VIIRS imagery to remove background noise and ephemeral lights was done using low and high thresholds. Improved DMSP and corrected VIIRS images from April 2012 - December 2013 are used in a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) along with Land Use Land Cover, as auxiliary input, to generate VIIRS-like imagery from 1992-2012. The modelled imagery was aggregated annually and showed an R2 of 0.94 with the results of other annual-scale VIIRS-like imagery products of India, R2 of 0.85 w.r.t GDP and R2 of 0.69 w.r.t population. Regression analysis of the generated VIIRS-like products with the actual VIIRS images for the years 2012 and 2013 over India indicated a good approximation with an R2 of 0.64 and 0.67 respectively, while the spatial density relation depicted an under-estimation of the brightness values by the model at extremely high radiance values with an R2 of 0.56 and 0.53 respectively. Qualitative analysis for also performed on both national and state scales. Visual analysis over 1992-2013 confirms a gradual increase in the brightness of the lights indicating that the cGAN model images closely represent the actual pattern followed by the nighttime lights. Finally, a synthetically generated monthly VIIRS-like product is delivered to the research community which will be useful for studying the changes in socio-economic dynamics over time.

Herwig dataset for HadML particle GAN training

These are the simulation data of hadronization using Herwig 7.2.1 Monte Carlo generator, which uses a cluster hadronization model. They have been used for the HadML particle GAN training and evaluation. Two samples are prepared. One uses a nominal set of hadronization parameters, the other one uses varied parameters which affect both the hadron kinematics and the hadron type distributions. In both samples, each cluster only decays to exactly two hadrons.

The code to read the data and use them for training can be found in https://github.com/hep-lbdl/hadml/releases/tag/2.0.0.

CSI4Free: GAN-Augmented mmWave CSI for Improved Pose Classification

This refers to the gan-generated dataset for the paper" CSI4Free: GAN-Augmented mmWave CSI for
Improved Pose Classification.

Abstract:In recent years, Joint Communication and Sensing (JC&S), has demonstrated significant success, particularly in utilizing sub-6 GHz frequencies with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) Wi-Fi devices for applications such as localization, gesture recognition, and pose classification. Deep learning and the existence of large public datasets has been pivotal in achieving such results. However, at mmWave frequencies (30-300 GHz), which has shown potential for more accurate sensing performance, there is a noticeable lack of research in the domain of COTS Wi-Fi sensing. Challenges such as limited research hardware, the absence of large datasets, limited functionality in COTS hardware, and the complexities of data collection present obstacles to a comprehensive exploration of this field. In this work, we aim to address these challenges by developing a method that can generate synthetic mmWave channel state information (CSI) samples. In particular, we use a generative adversarial network (GAN) on an existing dataset, to generate 30,000 additional CSI samples. The augmented samples exhibit a remarkable degree of consistency with the original data, as indicated by the notably high GAN-train and GAN-test scores. Furthermore, we integrate the augmented samples in training a pose classification model. We observe that the augmented samples complement the real data and improve the generalization of the classification model.

The repository is available here: https://github.com/nisarnabeel/Dataset-GAN-Augmented-mmWave-CSI-for-improved-pose-classification

Paper Link:https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10646223/

MOST-GAN Pre-trained Model

Introduction

Recent advances in generative adversarial networks (GANs) have led to remarkable achievements in face image synthesis. While methods that use style-based GANs can generate strikingly photorealistic face images, it is often difficult to control the characteristics of the generated faces in a meaningful and disentangled way. Prior approaches aim to achieve such semantic control and disentanglement within the latent space of a previously trained GAN. In contrast, we propose a framework that a priori models physical attributes of the face such as 3D shape, albedo, pose, and lighting explicitly, thus providing disentanglement by design. Our method, MOST-GAN, integrates the expressive power and photorealism of style-based GANs with the physical disentanglement and flexibility of nonlinear 3D morphable models, which we couple with a state-of-the-art 2D hair manipulation network. MOST-GAN achieves photorealistic manipulation of portrait images with fully disentangled 3D control over their physical attributes, enabling extreme manipulation of lighting, facial expression, and pose variations up to full profile view.

To foster further research into this topic, we are publicly releasing our pre-trained model for MOST-GAN. Please see our AAAI paper titled [MOST-GAN: 3D Morphable StyleGAN for Disentangled Face Image Manipulation](https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.01048) for details.

At a Glance

-The size of the unzipped model is ~300MB.

-The unzipped folder contains: (i) a README.md file and (ii) ./checkpoints/checkpoint01.pt pre-trained model. The pre-trained model could be loaded in our publicly released MOST-GAN implementation.

Citation

If you use the MOST-GAN data in your research, please cite our paper:

@inproceedings{medin2022most, title={MOST-GAN: 3D morphable StyleGAN for disentangled face image manipulation}, author={Medin, Safa C and Egger, Bernhard and Cherian, Anoop and Wang, Ye and Tenenbaum, Joshua B and Liu, Xiaoming and Marks, Tim K}, booktitle={Proceedings of the AAAI conference on artificial intelligence}, volume={36}, number={2}, pages={1962--1971}, year={2022} }

License

The MOST-GAN data is released under CC-BY-SA-4.0 license.

All data:

Created by Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), 2022,2023 SPDX-License-Identifier: CC-BY-SA-4.0

Beatings of ratchet current magneto-oscillations in GaN-based grating gate structures: Manifestation of spin-orbit band splitting

OPEN DATA related to the research publication:

Sai, P., Potashin, S. O., Szoła, M., Yavorskiy, D., Cywiński, G., Prystawko, P., ... & Kachorovskii, V. Y. (2021). Beatings of ratchet current magneto-oscillations in GaN-based grating gate structures: Manifestation of spin-orbit band splitting. Physical Review B, 104(4), 045301 [arXiv:2102.12791].

Abstract: We report on the study of the magnetic ratchet effect in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures superimposed with a lateral superlattice formed by a dual-grating gate structure. We demonstrate that irradiation of the superlattice with a terahertz beam results in the direct ratchet current, which shows giant magneto-oscillations in the regime of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations. The oscillations have the same period and are in phase with the resistivity oscillations. Remarkably, their amplitude is greatly enhanced as compared with the ratchet current at zero magnetic field, and the envelope of these oscillations exhibits large beatings as a function of the magnetic field. We demonstrate that the beatings are caused by the spin-orbit (SO) splitting of the conduction band. We develop a theory which gives a good qualitative explanation of all experimental observations and allows us to extract the SO splitting constant αSO=7.5±1.5 meVÅ. We also discuss how our results are modified by plasmonic effects and show that these effects become more pronounced with decreasing the period of the grating gate structures down to submicrons.
