Numbers and shares of Open Access Journals in Sociology charging publication fees (article processing charges APCs)

<p>On the eleventh of June 2014 the Directory of Open Access Journals DOAJ listed&nbsp;109 sociology journals.&nbsp; For these journals the information on publication charges was wrong in more than 10 % of the cases. Focusing on the eleven journals that - according to the DOAJ - used (always or conditionally) APCs the situation is even worse: &nbsp;10 of these journals (90,9 %) were categorized wrongly.</p> <p>In fact only three out of these 109 journals (2,75 %) are charging their authors. The files contain corrected information for the 109 journals including the sums charged by the journals.</p>

SNSF Open Access Monitoring: Data Publications 2013-2014

<p>This spreadsheet contains supplemental data to the report: "Open Access to Publications: SNSF monitoring report 2013 - 2015" (http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.584131), where it was found that at least 39% of publications out of SNSF funded grants are either Gold or Green Open Access.</p> <p>The initial data is based on the reported publications to the Swiss National Science Foundation via the grant administration system mySNF as of <strong>11. September 2015.</strong> This data is also available as open data on p3.snf.ch. Please be aware, that grant beneficiaries can update the metadata to the reported publications, including the Open Access status anytime during and after the end of a grant.</p> <p>Prior to validation, the actual publication date of publications with “in press/accepted” status was verified insofar as possible, and the details updated (approx. 3'000 publications). For further processing only publications with <strong>publication date 2013-2014</strong> were considered. Publications with the status “in press/accepted” status were excluded. Duplicates, i.e. publications cited as output for more than one project (approx. 2'500) are also filtered out. Where identifiable as such, pure abstracts (e.g. in journal supplements), working papers and pre-prints were also excluded.</p> <p><br> The basic goal was to locate a DOI for the publication and update the metadata. 78% of the 17'420 publications scrutinised have in the meantime been assigned a DOI. Using the DOI and the linked metadata available in CrossRef, unique searches could be performed in additional sources such as DOAJ, Pubmed and Pubmed Central, OpenAIRE (repository aggregator) and ADS (Astrophysics Data System). After the initial search for open access full text in these external sources, a search was made in Google Scholar using the DOI of the remaining publications still to be validated and links to any open access full text were extracted. Where even the Google Scholar search failed to turn up open access full text, the status was set to “closed access”. The OA status of 4'212 publications from the period 2013 to 2014 remained unclear, but it is more likely that they are in closed rather than open access mode.</p>

<p>This video (duration 1:51), produced as part of the project &quot;Austrian Transition to Open Access 2&quot; addresses employees at research institutions involved in processing invoices for scientific publications (especially accountants, departmental assistants, secretaries). It aims to sensitize this group to the importance of OA cost monitoring and the correct handling of OA invoices. <p>This dataset includes the deidentified respondent demographic data of a survey distributed to open access journal editors from journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals&nbsp; (DOAJ). In addition to respondent demographics, the dataset includes the qualitative analyses results conducted by the authors about author's contracts which were solicited as part of the survey. Data from: In an age of open access to research policies: physician and public health NGO staff research use and policy awareness

Introduction: Through funding agency and publisher policies, an increasing proportion of the health sciences literature is being made open access. Such an increase in access raises questions about the awareness and potential utilization of this literature by those working in health fields. Methods: A sample of physicians (N=336) and public health non-governmental organization (NGO) staff (N=92) were provided with relatively complete access to the research literature indexed in PubMed, as well as access to the point-of-care service UpToDate, for up to one year, with their usage monitored through the tracking of web-log data. The physicians also participated in a one-month trial of relatively complete or limited access. Results: The study found that participants' research interests were not satisfied by article abstracts alone nor, in the case of the physicians, by a clinical summary service such as UpToDate. On average, a third of the physicians viewed research a little more frequently than once a week, while two-thirds of the public health NGO staff viewed more than three articles a week. Those articles were published since the 2008 adoption of the NIH Public Access Policy, as well as prior to 2008 and during the maximum 12-month embargo period. A portion of the articles in each period was already open access, but complete access encouraged a viewing of more research articles. Conclusion: Those working in health fields will utilize more research in the course of their work as a result of (a) increasing open access to research, (b) improving awareness of and preparation for this access, and (c) adjusting public and open access policies to maximize the extent of potential access, through reduction in embargo periods and access to pre-policy literature.

The models includes both OA embargo data and the relative growth rates of different OA types over time, based on the OA status of 70 million journal articles published between 1950 and 2019.</p> <p>The study also looks at article usage data, analyzing the proportion of views to OA articles vs views to articles which are closed access. Signal processing techniques are used to model how these viewership patterns change over time. Viewership data is based on 2.8 million uses of the Unpaywall browser extension in July 2019.</p> <p>We found that Green, Gold, and Hybrid papers receive more views than their Closed or Bronze counterparts, particularly Green papers made available within a year of publication. We also found that the proportion of Green, Gold, and Hybrid articles is growing most quickly.</p> <p>In 2019:</p> <ul> <li> <p>31% of all journal articles are available as OA</p> </li> <li> <p>52% of article views are to OA articles</p> </li> </ul> <p>Given existing trends, we estimate that by 2025:</p> <ul> <li> <p>44% of all journal articles will be available as OA</p> </li> <li> <p>70% of article views will be to OA articles</p> </li> </ul> <p>The declining relevance of closed access articles is likely to change the landscape of scholarly communication in the years to come.</p>
