Weaving the Penelope Fabric. Part I: Starting Borders.
<p>A famous vase from Chiusi depicts Penelope in front of a patterned fabric. The video demonstrates how such a fabric could have been woven on a warp-weighted loom, and presents the technique of combining two starting borders in tablet-weaving. The footage stems from 2009 when Ellen Harlizius-Klück tried out the possibilities of a warp-weighted loom within an exhibition on ancient textile technology in the Clothiers Museum Bramsche (Germany).</p>
Weaving the Penelope Fabric. Part II: Double Weave
<p>A famous vase from Chiusi depicts Penelope in front of a patterned fabric. The video demonstrates how such a fabric could have been woven on a warp-weighted loom and presents the technique of patterned double-weave combined with a tablet-woven starting border extended to the sides of the fabric. The footage stems from 2009 when Ellen Harlizius-Klück prepared the loom for the 140 years anniversary of the Museum for Plaster Casts of Classical Sculptures Munich.</p>

Weaving the Penelope Fabric. Part III: Unweaving
<p>A famous vase from Chiusi depicts Penelope in front of a patterned fabric. The video demonstrates how such a fabric, once woven on a warp-weighted loom, could have been unwoven. Depictions of Penelope's unweaving the fabric ny night often show her tearing apart the fabric or its threads. This video demonstrates that it is not easy to distinguish weaving from unweaving, especially in an image or photograph. The video was taken in 2021 in the PENELOPE laboratory in the Museum for Plaster Casts of Classical Sculptures.</p>
