Landsat-based dataset for mapping annual center-pivot irrigated cropland in Brazil

<p>Center-pivot irrigated cropland (CPIC) is a critical component of irrigation and plays an essential role in improving water use efficiency and increasing food production. To automatically extract the spatial distribution of CPIC in Brazil based on the remote sensing technology, we constructed a training dataset that supports the semantic segmentation models.</p><p>The dataset were built with the &nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/landsat-5">Landsat 5</a> , 7 and 8<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/landsat-7">&nbsp;</a> images as well as the CPIC maps from <a href="https://metadados.snirh.gov.br/geonetwork/srv/por/catalog.search#/metadata/e2d38e3f-5e62-41ad-87ab-990490841073">ANA reference</a> data. We used the Landsat images in 2005, 2010 and 2015 to build the dataset.</p><p>The samples in train_images and train_masks were used to train and valid the Convolutional Neural Network models;&nbsp;</p><p>The samples in valid_data were used to test the model's prediction accuracy.</p><p>Pixels with values 255 and 0 in the mask samples represent the CPIC and background categories.</p><p><strong>For technical details that used to create the dataset, please refer to </strong><i><strong>https://doi.org/</strong></i><strong>10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2023.10.007.</strong></p>

Pivot subtitling of Korean dramas on Netflix Türkiye between 2015 and 2023

<p>This dataset complements the research article&nbsp;<em>Pivot Subtitling on Netflix: the Case of Squid Game </em>(Dallı, 2024) and provides comprehensive information on Korean dramas and their subtitlers on Netflix T&uuml;rkiye from 2015 to 2023. It also includes an analysis report derived from the raw findings. The data was manually compiled in January 2024.</p> <p>The dataset comprises the following files:</p> <ol> <li><strong>turkish-subtitlers-of-korean-content-on-netflix:</strong> This file provides raw data on Korean dramas, including Netflix release date, title, episode count, assigned subtitlers, number of subtitlers involved, and translation methods (subtitling or dubbing).</li> <li><strong>pivot-subtitling-on-netflix_the-case-of-squid-game:</strong> This R Markdown file offers an analysis report examining the yearly trends of Korean dramas released on Netflix T&uuml;rkiye and the average number of Turkish subtitlers per drama.</li> </ol> <p>This dataset is designed to help understand trends in the release of Korean dramas on Netflix, with a particular focus on Turkish subtitlers. Species richness: a pivotal factor mediating the effects of land use intensification and climate on grassland multifunctionality

<p>Temperate semi-natural grasslands harbour unique biodiversity, support livestock farming through forage production, and deliver many essential ecosystem services (ESs) to human society; they are highly multifunctional. However, temperate grassland ecosystems are also among the most threatened ecosystems on earth due to land use and climate change. Understanding how biodiversity, climate, and land use intensification impact grassland multifunctionality through complex direct and indirect pathways is critical to better anticipate the future of these fragile ecosystems. </p> <p>Here, we evaluate how local plant species richness (SR) modulates the effect of land use intensification and climate on grassland multifunctionality (using six key ESs: biomass productivity and stability, forage quality, carbon storage, pollination, and local plant rarity) in the French Massif Central, the largest grassland in Western-Europe. We sampled 100 grassland fields with contrasted fertilisation rates, and SR over large elevational and latitudinal gradients related to variation in mean annual temperature (MAT), and drought severity (DS), two key climate change drivers that are predicted to increase in the future.</p> <p>Using a confirmatory path analysis, we found that SR was the main driver of multifunctionality. We also found significant SR × MAT and SR × fertilization interactions suggesting that warm climate and high fertilization rates may alter the biodiversity-ecosystem multifunctionality relationships. Furthermore, increasing temperature and fertilization indirectly influenced multifunctionality by decreasing SR and consequent multifunctionality in warm low-land and highly fertilized grasslands compared to colder montane grasslands or less fertilised ones. DS only impacted some ES individually (e.g. forage quality).</p> <p>Synthesis and applications: we identified SR as a pivotal factor mediating the effects of land use intensification and climate on multifunctionality through both direct and indirect pathways. Failing to account for changes in SR could thus bias any prediction of – or aggravate – the effects of land use intensification and climate change on ESs delivery in temperate grassland ecosystems. Considering that SR, MAT, and fertilization are major proxies of three main global change drivers (biodiversity loss, climate change, and land use intensification) our study may help to better anticipate the effect of multiple interacting global change drivers on grassland ecosystems.</p>

Pivotal role of O-antigenic polysaccharide display in the sensitivity against phage tail-like particles in environmental Pseudomonas kin competition

<p>Environmental pseudomonads<i> </i>colonize various niches including insect and plant environments. When invading these environments, bacteria are confronted with the resident microbiota. To cope with closely related strains they deploy narrow-spectrum weaponry such as tailocins, <i>i.e</i> phage tail-like particles. Little is known about the receptors for these tailocins especially among phylogenetically closely related species. Here, we studied the interaction between an R-tailocin from <i>Pseudomonas protegens </i>CHA0 and a targeted kin, <i>Pseudomonas protegens </i>Pf-5. Using genome-wide transposon insertion sequencing, we identified that lipopolysaccharides are involved in the sensitivity of Pf-5 towards the tailocin of CHA0. By generating Pf-5 lipopolysaccharide mutants and exposing them to extracted tailocin, we specified the two O-antigenic polysaccharides (O-PS) targeted by the tailocin. We affirmed the role of these O-PS through competition assays<i> in vitro </i>as well as in insects. Further, we demonstrate that O-PS are double-edge swords that are responsible for the sensitivity of <i>P. protegens</i> towards phage tail-like particles produced by their kin, but shield bacteria from the immune system of the insect. Our results shed light on the trade-off that bacteria are confronted with, where specific O-PS decorations can both be of benefit or disadvantage depending on the host environment and its bacterial inhabitants.</p>
