Fifty lines in a page.</p> <p>The First Part (to Sû. 18) of the large Commentary on the Koran التفسیر الکبیر, properly styled مفاتیح الغیب, by Fakhr al-dîn Abu’l-faḍl Muḥammad b. ‘Omar Râzî (d. A. H. 606), who finished it in A. H. 602. Cf. Ḥ. Kh. vi. 5; Ibn Khallikân, ed. Wüstenfeld, No. ٦١١; and Cat. Bodl. ii. 701.</p> <p>It begins with a long and detailed explanation of the first Sûrah, which forms a separate book.<sup>1</sup> The first words are (fol. 9): الحمدلله الذی وفّقنا لاداء افضل الطاعات، ووقفنا علی کیفیة اکتساب اکمل السعادات، و هدانا الی ان قلنا –followed by الاستعاذة and البسملة , and a paraphrase of Sûrah 1. Then the commentary begins: اما بعد فهذا کتاب مشتمل علی شرح بعض ما رزقنا الله من علوم سورة الفاتحة. It contains a مقدّمة in three فصول, the beginning of the first of which is quoted in Ḥ. Kh., and three books, each subdivided into ابواب and مسائل. They are:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Fol. 10<em>v</em>. فی العلوم المستنبطة من قوله اعوذ بالله;</p> </li> <li> <p>Fol. 19. فی مباحث بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم; and</p> </li> <li> <p>Fol. 26. الکلام فی سورة الفاتحة.</p> </li> </ol> <p>The commentary on the following Sûrah (Sû. 2 from fol. 37<em>v. </em>to 177) is also very extensive, consisting rather of separate tracts, which are often subdivided into different مسائل. The whole text of the Kora is inserted in portions.</p> <p>The present MS. consists of two volumes. The first, which concludes with Sû. 3 (on fol.220), has the following colophon:</p> <p>تم السفر الاول من التفسیر الکبیر الذی صنّفه الامام العالم البارع الفیلسوف فخر الملة و حبر الامة علّامة (sic) الرازی برد الله مضجعه و شکر سعیه بحمد الله و منه وسعة لطفه و عونه علی ید احقر عباد الله حمزة بن محمد بن المحمود حقّق الله رجاه و من المخاوف نجّاه ظهیرة یوم الاحد التاسع من شهر الله الاصبّ رجب المرجب سنة ثلث و ثلثین بعد الالف من الهجرة النبویة المصطفویة علیه و علی آله الصلوات و الف الف التحیة.</p> <p>The second volume contains the date of the author, relating to Sû. 18:</p> <p>تم تفسیر هذه السورة یوم الثلثاء السابع عشر من شهر صفر سنة اثنتین و ستمائة فی بلدة غزنین و نسال اکرم الاکرمین و ارحم الراحمین ان یخصنا بالمغفرة و الفضل فی یوم الدین.</p> <p>The colophon runs as follows:</p> <p>تم المجلد الاول من کتاب تفسیر الکبیر امتثالا لامر مخدومنا و مخدوم اهل العالم صاحب الفضل و الکرم جامع المعقول و المنقول حاوی الفروع و الاصول شیخ محمد الشهیر بابن الخاتون العاملی ادام الله ظلال افادته و افاضته علی مفارق الطلاب بحسب الجد و الطاقة علی ید اقل الخلیقة بل لا شی فی الحقیقة محمد امین ابن فضیلت پناه مرحومی مولانا مهدی رستمداری فی یوم الاحد ثالث عشر شهر ذی القعدة الحرام من شهور سنة اثنی (sic) و اربعین بعد الالف من الهجرة النبویة المصطفویة اللهم اغفر کاتبه (sic) و لمن نظر فیه آمین یا رب العالمین.</p> <p>Beautifully written; the words of the Koran in the Thulth character and in gold, headings in red and blue. The beginning of each volume is splendidly ornamented and gilt; gold lines round the pages.</p> <p>The whole is preceded by a lengthy Memoir of Râzî, including a list of his works and a survey of the present commentary. It begins: فی بعض فضائل مولانا الامام فخر الملة و الدین الرازی و ذکر مصنّفاته التی شهرت و وصلت هذه البلاد مصدّرة بخطبة بلیغة. Written in a similar style, also with an ornament at the beginning.</p> <p>In a very elegant native binding, illuminated both outside and inside.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><sup>1</sup> Cf. Fifteen lines in a page.</p> <p>وقوفي سجاوندي</p> <p>A List of the Pauses to be observed in Reading the Koran, according to the system of SAJÂWANDÎ (Muḥammad b. Ṭaifûr, sixth century). This is probably an abridgment of the fundamental work of Sajâwandî,<sup>1 </sup>who is quoted at the beginning (fol. 3). The real author, perhaps, is introduced immediately afterwards, viz.:</p> <p>استاذ البشیر )البشرr.) فی عصره المولی الحاجّ قوام الملّة والدین عبدالله بن الفقیه نجم الملة و الدین محمود اعلی اللهُ تعالی درجتهما فی علّیّین.</p> <p>Beginning:</p> <p>سورة فاتحة الکتاب سبع آیات و هی مکیة ثم مدنیة و رکوع واحد بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم، کوفی العالمین لآ الرحیم لآ الدین ،<sup>ط</sup> نستعین ،<sup>ط</sup></p> <p>Written in large characters, by Muḥammad Bâḳi (?) b. ‘Abd al-laṭîf. The name of the author, as given above, appear at the commencement of Sû. 2 (fol. 1<em>v</em>.). This commentary, which may be regarded as the fundamental work of Shî’ah <em>Tafsîr</em>, is, on the whole, concise; only the causes (اسباب) of several revelations are related at greater length. It is founded chiefly on alleged sayings of the Imâms Abu Ja’far (Muḥammad Bâḳir), and Abu ‘Abdallah (Ja’far Ṣâdiḳ), quoted either directly (by قال) or by an <em>Isnâd</em>, which always begins with the author’s father.</p> <p>The first words are: عن النضر بن سوید و احمد بن محمد; and the conclusion:</p> <p>قد وقع الفراغ من تسوید هذا الکتاب المبارک ضحوة یوم الخامس من .... Cf. Ḥ. Kh. ii. 638, جوامع الجامع, and also v. 401. His statements are, however, very incorrect.</p> <p>The Preface begins: الحمدلله الذی اکرمنا بکتابه الکریم، و منّ علینا بالسبع المثانی و القران العظیم، و ما ضمّنه من الآیات و الذکر الحکیم</p> <p>The author relates that, after finishing his مجمع البیان, he read for the first time <a href="https://www.worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n81048213/">Zamakhsharî</a>’s <a href="https://archive.org/details/alkitabalkashaf00zama/page/5/mode/2up"><em>Kashshâf</em></a>, and made extracts from it, which he afterwards published as a separate book, serving as a Supplement to his first work, and entitled الکافی فی الشافی. Finally, at the instance of his son, <a href="https://en.wikishia.net/view/Al-Hasan_b._al-Fadl_al-Tabrisi">Abu Naṣr al-Ḥasan</a> [ابو نصر الحسن بن الفضل الطبرسي], he combined the contents of both in a third and more abridged work,-- the present one. As to the time of its composition, the author writes as follows in the Epilogue (fol. 398<em>v</em>.):</p> <p>و کان ابتدائی بتالیفه سنة اثنتین و اربعین و خمسمائة فی یوم السبت الثامن عشر من صفر و فراغی منه بعون الله و منّه لستٍّ بقین من المحرّم الشهر الثانی عشر فی مدة شهور العام و عدة نقباء موسی الاعلام بارض الشام فی سالف الایّام<sup>1</sup> و خلفاء نبیّنا محمّد علیه و علیهم السلم ائمة الاسلام و حجج المهیمن السلام</p> <p>This MS. consists of two volumes of the same paper, executed by different hands. The first (to Sû. 18) is well written, and has some marginal notes. The two following lines have been added at the end (fol. 196<em>v</em>.):</p> <p>فلم ارَ ودّهم الّا خداعاً</p> <p>و لم ارَ دینَهم اِلّا نفاقا</p> <p>Together with the following notice:</p> <p>هذا الکتاب من اوّله الی هاتین القسیمتین الجدیدتین بخط محمد بن علی بن محمد بن ابراهیم بن احمد المعلّم غفر الله له و لوالدیه و تاریخه کما کتبه یوم الاحد الرابع من شهر شعبان احد شهور سنة ست و تسعین و ثمانمائة</p> <p>The second volume, from Sû. 19 to the end, is likewise well written. The scribe was also a Shî’ite, for at the end he blesses ‘Alî and all the Imâms.</p> <p>Fol. 21 should follow fol. 15, and foll. 48 should come after fol. 6.</p> <p>Seals and notes of several owners on the title page, one of them of A. The author, who is not named here, is <a href="http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n2002052868/">Abu ‘Alî al-Faḍl b. al- Ḥasan b. al-Faḍl ṬABARSÎ</a>, a Shî’ite (d. A. H. 548). Cf. Catal. Mus. Brit. 671; Bodl. i. 50, and below, No. <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4479858">64</a>. Ḥ. Kh. v. 400 sq. confounds the author with the well-known Ṭûsî (d. A. H. 460).</p> <p>The Preface has a double <em>Ḥamdalah</em>, beginning الحمدلله الذی ارتفعت عن مطارح الفکر جلالته and الحمدلله الذی انزل الفرقان هدی للناس respectively.
