<p>Social isolation causes profound changes in social behaviour in a variety of species. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms modulating behavioural responses to social isolation and social recovery remain to be elucidated. Here, we quantified the behavioural response of vinegar flies to social isolation using two distinct protocols (social space preference and spontaneous tendencies to form groups). We found that social isolation increased social space and reduced sociability. These effects of social isolation were reversible and could be reduced after 3 days of group housing. Flies with a loss of function of <em>neuroligin3</em> (ortholog of autism-related <em>neuroligin</em> genes) with known increased social space in a socially enriched environment, were still able to recover from social isolation. We also show that dopamine is needed for a response to social isolation and recovery in males but not in females. Furthermore, only in males, dopamine levels are reduced after isolation and are not recovered after group housing. Finally, in socially enriched flies mutant for <em>neuroligin3</em>, dopamine levels are reduced in males, but not in females. We propose a model to explain how dopamine and <em>neuroligin3</em> are involved in the behavioural response to social isolation and its recovery in a dynamic and sex-specific manner.</p>
Impact of prolonged chronic social isolation stress on behavior and multifractal complexity of metabolic rate in Octodon degus
<p>We investigated the effects of prolonged chronic social isolation stress on behavioral, cognitive, and physiological performance in the social, long-lived rodent <em>Octodon degus</em>. Degu pups were separated into two social stress treatments: control (CTRL) and chronically isolated (CI) individuals from post-natal and post-weaning until adulthood. We quantified anxiety-like behavior and cognitive performance with behavioral tests. Additionally, we measured their basal metabolic rate (BMR). Data include behavioral tests and physiological traits (body mass and Basal Metabolic Rate).</p>
Dynamic social interactions and keystone species shape the diversity and stability of mixed-species biofilms – an example from dairy isolates - Dataset
<p>We previously reported a bacterial four-species biofilm model comprising <i>Stenotrophomonas rhizophila </i>(SR), <i>Bacillus licheniformis </i>(BL), <i>Microbacterium lacticum </i>(ML), and <i>Calidifontibacter indicus</i> (CI) that were isolated from the surface of a dairy pasteuriser after cleaning and disinfection. These bacteria produced 3.13-fold more biofilm mass compared to the sum of biofilm masses in monoculture (<a href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2023.1159434">https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2023.1159434</a>). In a subsequent experiment we confirmed that the observed community synergy resulted from dynamic social interactions among various species pairs, encompassing commensalism, exploitation, and amensalism. <i>M. lacticum</i> appeared to be the keystone species as it increased the growth of all other species that led to the synergy in biofilm mass. Interactions among the other three species (in the absence of <i>M. lacticum</i>) also contributed towards the synergy in biofilm mass. Bacterial cell-free-supernatants were also investigated to assess the nature of the observed synergy. The first four sheets of the Excel file contain raw cell count data for the four species (SR, BL, ML, and CI), recorded every 4 h over a 24 h period on the surface of stainless steel (SS) in the presence of brain-heart-infusion (BHI) medium and skim-milk (SM). Data related to individual bacterial cell counts in various mixed-species biofilms are also presented. These biofilms were developed on SS in BHI for h. Data related to bacterial biofilm masses in different mixed-species biofilm combinations are also presented, showcasing the effect of replacing one strain with its CFS. Species written in red indicate that their CFS was used, not their viable form. </p>

Data from: The transgenerational consequences of paternal social isolation and predation exposure in threespined sticklebacks
<p>Parents routinely encounter stress in the ecological environment that can affect offspring development (transgenerational plasticity: TGP); however, parents' interactions with conspecifics may alter how parents respond to ecological stressors. During social buffering, the presence of conspecifics can reduce the response to or increase the speed of recovery from a stressor. This may have cascading effects on offspring if conspecifics can mitigate parental responses to ecological stress in ways that blunt the transmission of stress-induced transgenerational effects. Here, we simultaneously manipulated both paternal social isolation and experience with predation risk prior to fertilization in threespined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We generated offspring via in-vitro fertilization to allow us to isolate paternal effects mediated via sperm alone (i.e., in the absence of paternal care). If social buffering mitigates TGP induced by paternal exposure to predation risk, then we expect the transgenerational effects of predation exposure to be weaker when a conspecific is present compared to when the father is isolated. Offspring of predator-exposed fathers showed reduced anxiety-like behavior and tended to be captured faster by the predator. Fathers who were socially isolated also had offspring that were captured faster by a live predator, suggesting that paternal social isolation may have maladaptive effects on how offspring respond to ecological stressors. Despite additive effects of paternal social isolation and paternal predation risk, we found no evidence of an interaction between these paternal treatments, suggesting that the presence of a conspecific did not buffer fathers and/or offspring from the effects of predation risk. Our results suggest that socially-induced stress is an important, yet underappreciated, mediator of TGP and can elicit transgenerational effects even in species that do not form permanent social groups. Future studies should therefore consider how the parental social environment can affect both within and trans-generational responses to ecological stressors.</p>
Flexible But Disconnected: Airbnb Hosts' Work-Family Experience and Social Isolation
<p>This research explores relationships among Airbnb hosts’ experience of social isolation/loneliness, social support, work-family conflict in relation to wellbeing, life satisfaction, and intent to stay with Airbnb. We tested a structural model using data from 136 Airbnb hosts and found that greater levels of social isolation were associated with higher work-family conflict, lower mental wellbeing, and lower life satisfaction. We also found the social support was negatively related to social isolation. Our findings suggest the double-bind of gig work: while hosting on Airbnb provides flexible work and additional income, it may come at the cost of social isolation. This has implications for gig workers and the organizations who contract with them. The absence of social connection and the competitive nature of the gig economy may result in feelings of alienation unless measures are taken to prioritize the humanity of workers.</p>
Camponotus fellah cDNA lists for: Social isolation shortens lifespan through oxidative stress in ants
<p>Social isolation negatively affects health, induces detrimental behaviors, and shortens lifespan in social species. Little is known about the mechanisms underpinning these effects because model species are typically short-lived and non-social. Using colonies of carpenter ant <em>Camponotus</em> <em>fellah</em>, we show that social isolation induces hyperactivity, alters space-use, and reduces lifespan via changes in the expression of genes with key roles in oxidation-reduction and an associated accumulation of reactive oxygen species. These physiological effects are localized to the fat body and oenocytes, which perform liver-like functions in insects. We use pharmacological manipulations to demonstrate that the oxidation-reduction pathway causally underpins the detrimental effects of social isolation on behavior and lifespan. These findings have important implications for our understanding of how social isolation affects behavior and lifespan in general.</p>
