Dataset: RC U-shaped walls subjected to in-plane, diagonal, and torsional loading: new experimental findings
<p>This dataset contains the processed experimental digital image correlation (DIC) technique data for two large-scale reinforced concrete U-shaped wall specimens tested at the Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics Laboratory (EESD Lab), École Polytechnique Féderale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. The abstract for the corresponding journal paper, submitted to <em>Engineering Structures</em>, is given below.</p> <p>Although reinforced concrete U-shaped walls are popular in construction practice internationally, there is a paucity of experimental research investigating the seismic performance of such salient elements. The present paper summarizes an experimental campaign on two slender U-shaped reinforced concrete walls detailed with a single-layer of reinforcement. State-of-the-art instrumentation was used to capture the three-dimensional displacement field of the wall surfaces using digital image correlation techniques. Experimental findings are presented, including strain profiles, equivalent plastic hinge lengths, longitudinal strains at the base, cracking distributions and widths, and out-of-plane deformations. The longitudinal strain profiles showed a yielding region up the boundary ends of the flanges of approximately 800 mm to 1200 mm in length, depending on the direction of loading and at large drift levels. Approximately half of the yielding zone length was found to be equal to the equivalent plastic hinge lengths, which were found to decrease as a function of drift. The longitudinal strains at the base of these walls showed some shear lag effects when subjected to in-plane or diagonal loading. For most directions of loading, the largest crack widths were found to be associated with flexural-shear or shear cracks. When subjected to a pure torque, the vertical strain distribution at the base of the wall correlated with the theoretical distribution for an open section governed by warping torsion. The out-of-plane deformations were primarily concentrated within a small region towards the ends of the flanges prior to the local buckling failures that were observed experimentally.Although reinforced concrete U-shaped walls are popular in construction practice internationally, there is a paucity of experimental research investigating the seismic performance of such salient elements. Peculiar torsion dynamical response of spider dragline silk
<p>These data are related to our paper "Dabiao Liu, Longteng Yu, Yuming He*, Kai Peng, Jie Liu, Juan Guan, and D. J. Dunstan. Peculiar Torsion Dynamical Response of Spider Dragline Silk. Applied Physics Letters, 111 (2017), 013701." In this work, the torsional properties of spider dragline silks from Nephila edulis and Nephila pilipes spiders are investigated by using a torsion pendulum technique. A permanent torsional deformation is observed after even small torsional strain. This behaviour is quite different from that of the other materials tested here, i.e., carbon fiber, thin metallic wires, Kevlar fiber, and human hair. The spider dragline thus displays a strong energy dissipation upon the initial excitation (around 75% for small strains and more for a larger strain), which correspondingly reduces the amplitude of subsequent oscillations around the new equilibrium position. The variation of torsional stiffness in relaxation dynamics of spider draglines for different excitations is also determined. The experimental result is interpreted in the light of the hierarchical structure of dragline silk.</p> <p>This project has received funding from the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 704292.</p>
Dataset: Decay of Torsional Stiffness of RC U-shaped Walls When Subjected Simultaneously to In-Plane Loading
<p>Reinforced concrete U-shaped walls are a popular construction choice, commonly used to resist the lateral loads from wind and earthquakes. When subjected to earthquake ground motions, it is likely that these structural elements will not only bend in flexure but twist due to asymmetries of the building plan layout and the location of the shear center outside of the section. This research investigates the dependency of the torsional stiffness of U-shaped walls on the in-plane translational displacement demands using novel experimental evidence and advanced numerical models. The experimental results show that for a given flexural position, the torsional stiffness decreases with increasing in-plane translational displacement. Furthermore, the numerical and experimental results indicate that when the wall is centered the torsional stiffness degrades at the same rate at the translational stiffness of the walls. Thus, the torsional stiffness of a U-shaped wall as a function of ductility can be estimated using the translational secant stiffness. The numerical results also show that the torsional stiffness increases as a function of the axial load ratio of the wall. The experimental and numerical dataset from this research investigation can be downloaded from a publicly accessible repository.</p>
An archive of data from Resonant Column and Cyclic Torsional Shear Tests performed on Italian Clays
<p>A large data-set of index and dynamic parameters measured from resonant column (RC) and cyclic torsional shear(CTS) tests on 170 undisturbed isotropically consolidated fine-grained specimens deriving from 90 sites in Central and Northern Italy is made available. Tests were all performed over the past 20 years at the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the Florence University using the same apparatus and following the same standardized procedures.</p> <p>The experimental data are organized in an excel file (named as “Italian_Clays_Archive.xlsx”). For each tested sample, the main physical, index and dynamic properties measured are archived with the code number of the sample (No) in the sheet named as “Dataset” as well as any information available about the borehole from which the sample has been taken. The list and the meaning of the symbols used can be found in the sheet named as “Legend”. Other sheets containing borehole stratigraphy are named as “XX-ST” (where “XX” stands as the bore-hole code, BH) and they can be recalled directly from the “Dataset” sheet. Note that stratigraphy is given in its original format, when available. However, depth and thickness of each layer can be easily deduced by the figure provided and the soil lithology is well represented by the symbol used that are those generally adopted internationally. Finally, the sheets named as "YY-CTS-STEPZ" (where “YY” and “Z” stand as the sample code, No, and the step number, respectively) contain the shear stress and strain values measured after CTS tests at different steps (i.e. amplitudes of the cyclic dynamic torsional loading applied) during the 1st, 5th, 15th, 20th and 25th.and/or and/or the corresponding shear modulus and damping ratio calculated from the same cycles.</p> <p>The selected samples were taken mostly in Holocene and Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine soil deposits at depths ranging from 1 m to 75 m below ground level and they mainly consist of normally and over-consolidated clayey silts or clays (1 < OCR < 9.4) of medium-to-high plasticity (4 < PI < 84), with very low-to high consistency (-1< Ic < 1.9) and initial void ratio, e0, ranging between 0.175 and 2.456. The database also includes some samples of organic clays of low consistency, very high water content and void ratio and low unit weight. The initial (small strain) values of shear modulus, G0, and damping ratio, D0, range between 21 MPa and 292 MPa and between 0.8% and 5.1%, respectively. The smallest and the largest shear strain values induced by RC and CTS tests are 1.9x10-5 % and 6.3x10-1%, respectively.</p>

Data from: Utility of real-time shear wave elastography in the assessment of testicular torsion
Real-time shear-wave elastography (SWE) is a newly developed method which can obtain the stiffness of tissues and organs based on tracking of shear wave propagation through a structure. Several studies have demonstrated its potential in the differentiation between diseased and normal tissue in clinical practices, however the applicability to testicular disease has not been well elucidated. We investigated the feasibility and reproducibility of SWE in the detection of testicular torsion. This prospective study comprised 15 patients with complete testicular torsion. Results obtained from SWE along with conventional gray-scale and color Doppler sonography and post-operative pathology were compared. The results revealed that (i) the size of injured testis was increased and the twisted testis parenchyma was heterogeneous. The blood flow signals in injured testis were barely visible or absent; (ii) The Young's modulus, including Emean, Emax, Emin and SD values in the border area of torsional testis were higher than those of normal testis (Emean, 78.07±9.01kPa vs 22.0±5.10kPa; Emax,94.07±6.53kPa vs 27.87±5.78kPa; Emin, 60.73±7.84 kPa vs 18.90±4.39kPa; SD, 7.67±0.60 kPa vs 2.30±0.36 kPa, [P<0.05]); The Emax and SD values in the central area of the torsional testis were higher than the corresponding area of the normal testis (Emax, 8.23±0.30 kPa vs 3.97±0.95kPa; SD, 1.5±0.26kPa vs 0.67±0.35kPa,[P<0.05]) and Emin values was lower than those of normal testicles(0.93±0.51kPa vs 1.6±0.36kPa; [P<0.05]); (iii) The Young's modulus measurement between two physicians showed good agreement. The pathological findings were accordance with SWE measurement. SWE is a non-invasive, convenient and high reproducible method and may serve as an important alternative tool in the diagnosis and monitoring the progression of the acute scrotums, in additional to conventional Doppler sonography.

Laser cooling a centimeter-scale torsion pendulum
<p>We laser cool a centimeter-scale torsion pendulum to a temperature of 10 mK (average occupancy of 6000 phonons) starting from room temperature (equivalent to ~10^8 phonons). This is achieved by optical radiation pressure forces conditioned on a quantum-noise-limited optical measurement of the pendulum’s angular displacement with an imprecision 13 dB below that at the standard quantum limit (SQL). The measurement sensitivity is the result of a novel ‘mirrored’ optical lever that passively rejects extraneous spatial-mode noise by 60 dB. The high mechanical quality (10^7) and quantum-noise-limited sub-SQL measurement imprecision demonstrate the necessary ingredients for realizing the quantum ground state of torsional motion — a pre-requisite for mechanical tests of gravity’s alleged quantum nature.</p>
