The integration of sensory feedback in the modulation of anuran landing preparation

Controlled landing requires preparation. Mammals and bipedal birds vary how they prepare for landing by predicting the timing and magnitude of impact from the integration of visual and non-visual information. Here we explore how an animal that moves primarily through hopping, Rhinella marina, the cane toad, integrates sensory information to modulate landing preparation. Earlier work suggests toads may modulate landing preparation using predictions of impact timing and/or magnitude based on non-visual sensory feedback during takeoff rather than visual cues about the landing itself. Here we disentangled takeoff and landing conditions by hopping toads off platforms of different heights and measured electromyographic (EMG) activity of an elbow extensor, m. anconeus, and used high-speed motion capture to quantify whole body and forelimb kinematics to test how toads integrate visual and non-visual information in landing preparation. We asked two questions: 1) when they conflict, do toads correlate landing preparation with takeoff or landing conditions? And 2) for hops with the same takeoff conditions, does visual information alter the timing of landing preparation? We found that takeoff conditions are a better predictor of the onset of landing preparation than landing conditions, but that visual information is not ignored. When hopping off higher platforms, toads start to prepare for landing later when takeoff conditions are invariant. This suggests that, unlike mammals, toads prioritize non-visual sensory feedback about takeoff conditions to coordinate landing, but that they do integrate visual information to fine-tune landing preparation.

HPTLC Data of "Metal Ion Cofactors Modulate Integral Enzyme Activity By Varying Differential Membrane Curvature Stress"

Lipid hydrolysis by the integral membrane protein OmpLA (outer membrane phospholipase). The enzymatic degradation of the proteoliposomes was determined by TLC. After lipid extraction against organic solvent (2:1 vol/vol chloroform/methanol) based on the Folch extraction method, the samples were spotted on a silica plate (Sigma-Aldrich, Steinheim, Germany) with the automatic TLC sampler 4 (CAMAG, Muttenz, Switzerland). The mobile phase in the developing chamber was a solvent mixture composed of 32.5:12.5:2 vol/vol/vol CHCl_3/MeOH/H_2O. After drying, the plate was immersed in a developing bath (5.08 g MnCl_2 dissolved in 480 ml H_2O, 480 ml EtOH and 32 ml H_2SO_4), which is sensitive to double bonds, and dried for 15 min at 120°C. To quantify the lipid concentrations the plate was scanned with the TLC scanner 3 (CAMAG, Muttenz, Switzerland) and further analyzed with WinCats software.

Lipids:

1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC)

1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (POPE)

1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (POPG)

Head and mandible shapes are highly integrated yet represent two distinct modules within and among worker sub-castes of the ant genus Pheidole

Ants use their mandibles for a wide variety of tasks related to substrate manipulation, brood transport, food processing, and colony defence. Due to constraints involved in colony upkeep, ants evolved a remarkable diversity of mandibular forms, often related to specific roles such as specialized hunting and seed milling. Considering these varied functional demands, we focused on understanding how the mandible and head shape vary within and between Pheidole sub-castes. Using x-ray microtomography and 3D geometric morphometrics, we tested if these structures are integrated and modular, and how ecological predictors influenced these features. Our results showed that mandible and head shape of majors and minor workers tend to vary from robust to slender, with some more complex changes related to the mandibular base. Additionally, we found that head and mandible shapes are characterized by a high degree of integration, but with little correlation with feeding and nesting habits. Our results suggest that a combination of structural (allometric) constraints and the behavioural flexibility conferred by caste dimorphism might largely buffer selective pressures that would otherwise lead to a fine-tuning between ecological conditions and morphological adaptation.

Data from: Non-monotonic temporal-weighting indicates a dynamically modulated evidence-integration mechanism
Perceptual decisions are thought to be mediated by a mechanism of sequential sampling and integration of noisy evidence whose temporal weighting profile affects the decision quality. To examine temporal weighting, participants were presented with two brightness-fluctuating disks for 1, 2 or 3 seconds and were requested to choose the overall brighter disk at the end of each trial. By employing a signal-perturbation method, which deploys across trials a set of systematically controlled temporal dispersions of the same overall signal, we were able to quantify the participants' temporal weighting profile. Results indicate that, for intervals of 1 or 2 sec, participants exhibit a primacy-bias. However, for longer stimuli (3-sec) the temporal weighting profile is non-monotonic, with concurrent primacy and recency, which is inconsistent with the predictions of previously suggested computational models of perceptual decision-making (drift-diffusion and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes). We propose a novel, dynamic variant of the leaky-competing accumulator model as a potential account for this finding, and we discuss potential neural mechanisms.
