Instructor Perspectives on APA Style in Nursing Education: Implicit and Explicit Value
<p><strong>OBJECTIVE:</strong> Disparities in how nursing faculty teach APA Style can confuse students and the librarians who help them. To clarify faculty expectations of and approaches to APA </p><p>Style, this study seeks to answer the following questions: (1) What do nursing faculty perceive as the impact or value of APA Style? (2) How do nursing faculty teach and grade APA Style? By revealing the unspoken assumptions about APA Style and the value it adds to nursing education, it is hoped that health sciences librarians can more intentionally and effectively support this aspect of the nursing curriculum.</p><p><strong>METHODS: </strong>A mixed-methods study was designed to investigate potential gaps between nursing instructors' expectations for APA and their teaching/grading practices. The study incorporated an online survey of 75 nursing faculty at 14 Carnegie institutions with nursing programs, as well as qualitative interviews with 12 faculty at those institutions. A grounded theory approach was used to uncover salient themes.</p><p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> Nursing instructors consistently emphasized the importance of APA for referencing/in-text citations in both the survey and the interviews. When discussing the value of APA Style in nursing education, interviewees stressed APA Style as essential in developing professional nursing communication skills and evidence-based practice. However, faculty expectations for students' APA skills were not in line with their teaching and grading practices.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> Given the wide range of reporting teaching and grading practices for APA Style, nursing programs should work to clarify expectations for APA Style, and standardize how it is taught.</p>
The deployment of temporary nurses and its association with permanent nurses' outcomes in Swiss psychiatric hospitals: A secondary analysis.
<p>The objective of this analysis was to investigate the frequency of temporary nurses’ deployment and their association with nurse staffing levels and permanent nurses’ outcomes in Swiss psychiatric hospitals. The data is based on the Match<sup>RN</sup> Psychiatry study including 79 psychiatric units and 651 nurses and provides unit level frequency of temporary nurses’ deployment and individual nurse level data on staffing levels and permanent nurses’ outcomes namely job satisfaction, burnout, and intention to leave organization or profession. The data was collected in 2019 and 2020. We provide the unit and nurse-level dataset, a codebook and the r code to replicate the analyses of the paper. EPOCHAL (Effects of Pollen on Cardiorespiratory Health and Allergic symptoms): Nurse home visit form (English and German)
<p>This questionnaire was developed for the EPOCHAL study (Effects of Pollen on Cardiorespiratory Health and Allergic symptoms). The study was sponsored and led by Swiss TPH in Basel, Switzerland and approved by the local ethics committee (Ethikkomission Nordwest- und Zentralschweiz EKNZ, project ID 2021-00151). Written informed consent was obtained from every participant prior to study inclusion. </p> <p>This is the "nurse home visit form" which was administered 6 times for each participant during weekly home visits by our study nurses during the pollen season. It includes questions about the following topics:<br> 1) Potential for Covid-19 infection, changes in vaccination status<br> 2) Overall health status<br> 3) Allergic symptoms: nose, eyes, lungs<br> 4) Sleep, mood and quality of life<br> 5) Medication use<br> 6) Time spent outdoors<br> 7) Daily covariate information: coffee and alcohol intake, eating, smoking, vigorous exercise<br> 8) Blood pressure measurements<br> 9) Heart rate variability recording<br> 10) Exhaled nitric oxide measurements<br> 11) Pulmonary function testing (spirometry)<br> 12) Comments</p> <p>The questionnaire is also available in German under the same DOI.</p> <p>Please note that this questionnaire was administered electronically on a tablet, and contains:</p> <ul> <li>Form logic, which determines the relevance of some questions based on previous answers. Affected questions are typically shown in grey color.</li> <li>Instructions (in bold blue font) to the participant/study nurse to guide the process of data collection (e.g. “please hand over the tablet to the participant/nurse”).</li> <li>Warnings (in large red font) and directions (in large grey font) to warn nurses against performance of spirometry measurements if contraindications were present. For example, when the nurse entered high blood pressure in Topic #8, or when recent surgery was indicated in Topic #11. The data is collected through a structured questionnaire and the nurse attrition data during the COVID-19 pandemic period was collected from the interview method during the survey. Statistical tests used were frequency, percentage, mean, Standard Deviation (S.D). The study showed that there is a moderate impact of increased nurse attrition on nursing administration during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study led to the identification of gaps that need to be addressed in a similar crisis.</span></p>
