MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Landscape-scale patterns of nutrient enrichment in a coral reef ecosystem: implications for coral to algae phase shifts, Adam et al., Ecol. Appl.
These data and analyses code were generated in support of the manuscript: Adam TC, Burkepile DE, Holbrook SJ, Carpenter RC, Claudet J, Loiseau C, Thiault L, Brooks, AJ, Washburn L, and RJ Schmitt, Ecological Applications We investigated the potential role of anthropogenic nutrient loading in driving recent coral-to-macroalgae phase shifts on reefs in the lagoons surrounding Moorea, French Polynesia. We used nitrogen (N) tissue content and stable isotopes (δ15N) in an abundant macroalga (Turbinaria ornata) together with empirical models of nutrient discharge to describe spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient enrichment in the lagoons. Turbinaria ornata were collected at 190 sites around Moorea in January, May, and August 2016. These sampling periods corresponded with distinct seasonal shifts in rainfall and wave forcing. Our results revealed that patterns of N enrichment were linked to rainfall, wave-driven circulation, and distance from anthropogenic nutrient sources, especially human sewage. In addition to describing high resolution patterns of N enrichment from 2016, we also analyzed core MCR time series on N tissue content in Turbinaria ornata from three habitats (fringing reef, back reef, and reef crest) at the six core MCR LTER sites between 2007 and 2013. These data showed that fringing reefs have been consistently enriched in N relative to back reefs, which are enriched relative to the reef crest. Further, these patterns mirror long-term patterns of nitrate and nitrite concentrations in the water column. We also analyzed core MCR time series on benthic communities and fishes and found that back reef sites that were consistently enriched in N between 2007 and 2013 experienced large increases in macroalgae while macroalgae remained much less abundant at back reef sites with lower N. These phase shifts to macroalgae occurred despite island-wide increases in the density and biomass of herbivorous fishes over the time period. Together, these results indicate th
Data from: A rapidly evolved shift in life history timing during ecological speciation is driven by the transition between developmental phases

For insect species in temperate environments, seasonal timing is often governed by the regulation of diapause, a complex developmental program that allows insects to weather unfavorable conditions and synchronize their lifecycles with available resources. Diapause development consists of a series of distinct phases including initiation, maintenance, termination, and post-diapause development. The evolution of insect seasonal timing depends in part on how these phases of diapause development and post-diapause development interact to affect variation in phenology. Here, we dissect the physiological basis of a recently evolved phenological shift in Rhagoletis pomonella (Diptera: Tephritidae), a model system for ecological divergence. A recently derived population of R. pomonella shifted from specializing on native hawthorn fruit to earlier fruiting introduced apples, resulting in a 3-4 week shift in adult emergence timing. We tracked metabolic rates of individual flies across post-winter development to test which phases of development may act either independently or in combination to contribute to this recently evolved divergence in timing. Apple and hawthorn flies differed in a number of facets of their post-winter developmental trajectories. However, divergent adaptation in adult emergence phenology in these flies was due almost entirely to the end of the pupal diapause maintenance phase, with post-diapause development having a very small effect. The relatively simple underpinnings of variation in adult emergence phenology suggest that further adaptation to seasonal change in these flies for this trait might be largely due to the timing of diapause termination unhindered by strong covariance among different components of post-diapause development.

Data from: Modeling effects of climate change and phase shifts on detrital production of a kelp bed
The exchange of energy and nutrients between ecosystems (i.e., resource subsidies) plays a central role in ecological dynamics over a range of spatial and temporal scales. Little attention has been paid to the role of anthropogenic impacts on natural systems in altering the magnitude, timing, and quality of resource subsidies. Kelp ecosystems are highly productive on a local scale and export over 80% of kelp primary production as detritus, subsidizing consumers across broad spatial scales. Here, we generate a model of detrital production from a kelp bed in Nova Scotia to hindcast trends in detrital production based on temperature and wave height recorded in the study region from 1976 to 2009, and to project changes in detrital production that may result from future climate change. Historical and projected increases in temperature and wave height led to higher rates of detrital production through increased blade breakage and kelp dislodgment from the substratum, but this reduced kelp biomass and led to a decline in detrital production in the long term. We also used the model to demonstrate that the phase shift from a highly productive kelp bed to a low-productivity barrens, driven by the grazing activity of sea urchins, reduces kelp detrital production by several orders of magnitude, an effect that would be exacerbated by projected increases in temperature and wave action. These results indicate that climate-mediated changes in ecological dynamics operating on local scales may alter the magnitude of resource subsidies to adjacent ecosystems, affecting ecological dynamics on regional scales.

Liquefied Natural Gas Phase III: Export Competition in a Well Supplied, Flow-Shifting Global Economy

With trillions of cubic feet of shale reserves, the United States’ (US) abundance of natural gas has prompted an increase in production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as an export commodity. While the Trump administration has taken strides to loosen policy set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in order to streamline US LNG export facility permitting, UNOTI has reasoned that policies focused too heavily on LNG as an export is misguided. A more robust energy policy acknowledges the higher value of natural gas to the petrochemical manufacturing industries as well as the development and commercialization of new LNG technologies in the maritime industry, particularly as a marine fuel. Furthermore, US energy independence fueled by shale mining will alter how the US acts in the global market place, thereby destabilizing the system in place since the Bretton Woods Agreement in 1944. However, competing natural gas rich nations like Australia, Qatar, and Russia have similar goals to expand production indicating US LNG export growth will not be without competition. In addition to potential increases in US LNG exports and what this implies for global markets, this paper discusses current transportation developments in LNG powered marine vessel refueling technology allowing for waterside refueling as an alternative to shore side bunkering, as well as an overview of what increased US shale frac’ing and LNG export implies for US roadway infrastructure and how short sea shipping may provide an alternative to trucking and rail movements.

Data from: Phase III of Wright's Shifting Balance Process and the variance among demes in migration rate
Interdemic selection by the differential migration of individuals out from demes of high fitness and into demes of low fitness (Phase III) is one of the most controversial aspects of Wright's Shifting Balance Theory. I derive a relationship between Phase III migration and the interdemic selection differential, S, and show its potential effect on FST. The relationship reveals a diversifying effect of interdemic selection by Phase III migration on the genetic structure of a metapopulation. Using experimental metapopulations, I explored the effect of Phase III migration on FST by comparing the genetic variance among demes for two different patterns of migration: (1) island model migration and (2) Wright's Phase III migration. Although mean migration rates were the same, I found that the variance among demes in migration rate was significantly higher with Phase III than with island model migration. As a result, FST for the frequency of a neutral marker locus was higher with Phase III than it was with island model migration. By increasing FST, Phase III enhanced the genetic differentiation among demes for traits not subject to interdemic selection. This feature makes Wright's process different from individual selection which, by reducing effective population size, decreases the genetic variance within demes for all other traits. I discussed this finding in relation to the efficacy of Phase III and random migration for effecting peak shifts, and the contribution of genes with indirect effects to among-deme variation.
