Meta-study water and mining conflicts

This dataset comprises the raw data and R Script for the following published article: Schoderer, M., & Ott, M. (2022). Contested water-and miningscapes–Explaining the high intensity of water and mining conflicts in a meta-study. World Development, 154, 105888. The article seeks to better understand the dynamics of mining and water conflicts, specifically under which (combinations of) conditions environmental defenders step outside the legal framework in their contestation of mining projects, according to existing case study-based research. More information on the methodology is available in the paper.

The file Water and mining conflicts full dataset includes the qualitative information extracted from published articles, the scoring scheme and the normalized scores used in the R analysis.
The R Script QCA_Preventive water and mining conflicts describes the fuzzy-set, two-step Qualitative Comparative Analysis conduct to understand under which conditions environmental defenders choose non-legal means in conflicts that occur in the planning or licensing stage of a mining project
The CSV file Normalized scores_preventive is the raw data used in the R Script QCA_Preventive water and mining conflicts
The R Script QCA_Reactive water and mining conflicts describes the fuzzy-set, two-step Qualitative Comparative Analysis conduct to understand under which conditions environmental defenders choose non-legal means in conflicts that occur when the mining project is already in operation
The CSV file Normalized scores_reactive is the raw data used in the R Script QCA_Reactive water and mining conflicts

Water and Planetary Health Analytics (WAPHA) global metal mines database

An estimated 23 M people live on floodplains affected by potentially dangerous concentrations of toxic waste derived from past and present metal mining activity. We analyze the global dimensions of this hazard, particularly Pb, Zn, Cu and As, using a geo-referenced global database detailing all known metal mining sites, and intact/failed tailings storage facilities. We then use process-based and empirically tested modelling, to produce a global assessment of metal mining contamination in river systems, and the number of human populations, and livestock exposed. Worldwide, metal mines impact 479,200 km of river channels and 164,000 km2 of floodplains. The number of people exposed to contamination sourced from long-term discharge of mining waste into rivers is almost fifty times greater than the number directly impacted by tailings dam failures.

Fig. 1 in Pannonibacter carbonis sp. nov., isolated from coal mine water
Fig. 1. Phylogenetic tree showing the relationship of strains Q4.6T and Q2.11 with strains of closely related species within the genus Pannonibacter as inferred from 16S rRNA gene sequences. Data with gaps and ambiguous nucleotides were removed during alignment for reconstruction of the tree. The tree was generated using the NJ method in MEGA 7.0 based on a comparison of 1497 nt. Bootstrap values are expressed as percentages of 1000 replications. The GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number of each sequence is shown in parentheses.
Combined effect of water stress and increased carbon dioxide on land cover establishment and development at mining sites - Field measurement results

Excel files containing field measurement results of plant species growing in open top chambers support the research presented in the manuscript titled 'Combined Effect of Water Stress and Increased Carbon Dioxide on Land Cover Establishment and Development at Mining Sites'. The data include measurements of physiological attributes, height, diameter, dry matter, and the number of emerged individuals of plants commonly used for land cover in post-mining sites. These data were collected in Parauapebas-PA, Brazil, from July to November 2022.

Experimental Dataset of the Ions in Mine Water on Mechanical Strength and Microstructure of Portland Cement

This version contains experimental data on tests with PO42.5 Portland cement mixed with mineral water containing sulfate, magnesium, and bicarbonate ions. The "Compressive Strength" section presents data on the compressive strength of cement mortar specimens (50 × 50 × 50 cm) under nine distinct experimental conditions at different curing ages (7, 28, 56, 90, and 120 days). The "XRD" section provides X-ray diffraction data of cement specimens at 28 and 90 days under five experimental conditions. The "SEM" section includes scanning electron microscopy images of cement samples at 28 days under the same five experimental conditions. The "TG-DTG" section illustrates the variations in TG and DTG values with temperature (T) for cement samples at 28 and 90 days.
