Numbers of Articles, Books and Dissertation theses indexed in BASE and percentages of items published Open Access, under Creative Commons Licenses and under Open Licenses (2013-2017)

A look at the data provided by the Open Access search engine BASE (http://base-search.net) shows that the Open Science compliance among dissertation theses stagnates. BASE knows three categories of accessibility: Open Access, Unknown, Non-Open Access. In the following tables and graphs, figures reported as "Open Access" have been categorised by BASE as Open Access. The tables and graphics show data from BASE (as of 06.03.2018) as follows:

a) Indexed theses, books and journal articles

b) Indexed theses, books and journal articles published by Open Access

c) indexed theses, books and journal articles under Creative Commons licenses.

d) indexed theses, books and journal articles, which are published under open licenses in the sense of the Open License, i. e. reflect terms of use of the Open Source.

Although doctoral theses already had a high share of open access by 2013 (43%), by 2017 it had risen by only 5% (2017:48%). At the same time, the proportion of books published in open access rose by 14% (from 20% to 34%) and articles by 17% from 44% (2013) to 61% (2017). The same effect can be seen in the proportion of CC-licensed items: Their share rose by 4% (from 9% to 13%) for doctoral theses, by 9% for books (from 4% to 13%) and 8% for articles (from 10% to 18%) between 2013 and 2017. However, the share of openly licensed items is most pronounced: it did not increase for doctoral theses, but remained at 2% between 2013 and 2017; in the same period it increased by 5% (from 1% to 6%) for books, and by 5% (from 5% to 10%) for articles.

Figure 3 in Taxonomic practice, creativity and fashion: what's in a spider name?
Figure 3. Temporal trends in the way taxonomists assign etymology by region. Coloured lines are predicted values and shaded surfaces represent 95% confidence intervals.
Figure 2 in Taxonomic practice, creativity and fashion: what's in a spider name?
Figure 2. Most frequent spider epithets. Only epithets shared by more than 30 species across the database are shown. Colour-coding refers to the most frequent use of each name (e.g. similis is most often used in a morphological sense, but in a few instances it was also used as a reference to the similarity in the geographic distribution of one species to another).
Figure 1 in Taxonomic practice, creativity and fashion: what's in a spider name?
Figure 1. Temporal variations in the way taxonomists assign spiders etymologies. A, breakdown of the total number of etymologies by category. B, temporal variations in the number of etymologies (annual sum by etymology type) between 1757 and 2019. C, plot of smooth terms for the temporal variations in the relative proportion of different types of etymologies, according to a generalized additive model. D, temporal variations in the proportional use of etymologies. In C and D, coloured lines and shaded surfaces are, respectively, the predicted trend and 95% confidence interval for each level of the factor type, according to a generalized additive model. Exact model estimates are given in the Supporting Information, Table S1.
Figure 4 in Taxonomic practice, creativity and fashion: what's in a spider name?
Figure 4. Spatial variations in the way taxonomists assign spiders etymologies. Pie charts display the proportions of etymology types by continent. Estimates (± standard errors) are based on Bernoulli generalized linear models testing for differences in the proportion of different etymology types by continent. Significant differences (P <0.001) from the baseline (Europe) are highlighted with colours (positive = turquoise; negative = red). Exact model estimates are given in the Supporting Information, Tables S2–S7.
Published articles on gender in cultural and creative sectors

Results from the analysis of 6.631 scientific articles on Gender in Cultural and Creative Sectors (CCS) retrieved from Web of Science and dating between 1958 and 2022. The largest number of publications have their focus on the audio-visual and multimedia industry (37,08%), followed by performing arts (20,48%), book and press (17,80%) and visual arts (9,35%). In other CCS, the share of publications ranges between 5,35% (advertising) and 0,41% (arts and crafts).

Therefore, there is an evident need to foster research on the women's role in particular domains of the CCS, such as heritage, library, archives, architecture and, especially, arts and crafts. Additionally, the role of women is less emphasized in the preservation and conservation stage of the CCS value chain (for almost all the domains), in the management and regulation stage (for visual and performing arts) and in the creation stage (in the audio-visual and multimedia sector).

A guide on Gender integration Cultural statistics can be retrieved at this URL: https://www.mesoc-project.eu/resources/gender-and-cultural-and-creative-sector-guide-gender-integration-cultural-statistics

Balancing AI Advancements: Preserving Human Creativity Amidst Growing Artificial Ingenuity

a recent empirical study in which tasks designed according to the principles of the grandomastery framework, specifically created to foster and evaluate skills in narrative and abstract thinking, were assigned to Chat GPT, Bing, and Google Bard. This experiment serves as a clear example of the abilities demonstrated by artificial intelligence (AI). By harnessing AI's skill in storytelling and introducing randomness through keywords and a predetermined thematic structure, the resulting outcomes were highly captivating. The visual representations of completed tasks related to comprehensive cognitive processes, organized within the grandomastery approach, effectively and eloquently depict AI's recent evolutionary path. This advancement spans from basic manipulation of data to the intricate art of crafting narratives that deeply resonate with audiences.

Creativity test results from TDS-Z (engl: TCT-DP)

The dataset contains data from the creativity test TSD-Z (engl. TCT-DP) by Urban and Jellen (2010) . The creativity test is a standardised culture free test. The test was used for the purposed of the DOIT project, which aimed at bringing entrepreneurial education, maker skills and social innovation together and at developing an educational programme lasting for at least 15 hours.

Children participating in the DOIT progamme worked on the test two times (pre and post test). The dataset contains the test results from 633 children from 10 different European countries, some basic demographic (age, gender, country, disability) and some variables regarding the DOIT programme (attended hours, Age of facilitators, gender ratio of facilitator, etc.). All variables are described in the list of variables in the SPSS file. For context information also a related DOIT report has been attached.

Stratified Reward Structures and Competition in Markets for Creative Production
Stratified reward structures have emerged as a universal feature of modern society, but their implications on the producers and consumers of creative work are not fully understood. We conducted an online experiment to test the effects of reward stratification in peer-reviewed creative production markets. We find that competition induced by stratification shapes the evolution of creative production, and that the quality of each tier in a stratified market is consistent with its position in the hierarchy. The top tier maintains high-quality standards by attracting many submissions and by filtering its output, operating as an effective sorting device for budget-constrained consumers. However, stratification generates higher levels of inequality among producers, leading to higher rates of market-exit for those lagging behind. We discuss the broad implications of reward stratification and artificial scarcity in hypercompetitive environments, contributing to the debate on cumulative advantage and the allocation of funding and recognition in science.
Perceived creativity in insight problems by secondary school students: Effects of problem and solver's variables

An exploratory empirical study was conducted to collect and analyse the perception of secondary education students regarding the creativity involved in insight problems. A total of 127 Spanish students from 8th grade (2nd ESO) and 11th grade (1st Bachillerato) participated in the study and assessed the creativity involved in the problems before and after attempting to solve them. These evaluations were related to the course, gender, surface, and structural aspects of the problems. Everyday life and science contexts were considered as problem surfaces or contexts. The structural aspects of the problems were associated with the specific strategy required to solve them, such as ‘chunk decomposition’ and ‘constrain relaxation,’ the assistance provided by the problem statement to initiate the resolution process, and the possibility of metacognitive control over the quality of the solution developed. Individual booklets were prepared with counterbalanced statements to assess perceived creativity and to solve the problems. The results show that, contrary to expectations, students are capable of mentally representing the structural aspects of the problems during reading and before solving them. The problem surface did not significantly affect the initial perception of creativity. After solving the problems, the average changes in perceived creativity were of small magnitude. The results encourage teachers to use insight problems as promoters of creativity in secondary school classrooms.

Licencing information allow potential re-users to quickly identify what they can do with the data in question and is therefore an important component to ensure the reusability of research.

In my research I analyse a pre-existing collection of 840 Horizon 2020 public data management plans (DMPs) available on the repository of the University of Vienna, Phaidra,, to determine which ones mention creative commons licences and among those who do, what licences are being used.

This excel file contains the data underlying the publication "Uncommon Commons? Creative Commons licencing in Horizon 2020 Data Management Plans ".

Sheet 1 contains the data collected in the previous "Data Re-Use" project: 840 DMPs downloaded from CORDIS and vetted to ensure they are public documents and not copyrighted

Sheet 2 contains the same data as sheet 1, with columns D to Q not visible (for better reading) but an added column R which now contains the CC licening information (where available)

Sheet 3 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC BY relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 4 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-SA relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 5 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-NC relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 6 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-ND relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 7 is filtered so that only the projects containing Cc-BY-NC-ND relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 8 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC-BY-NC-SA relevant licencing are shown

Sheet 9 is filtered so that only the projects containing CC0 relevant information are shown

Sheet 10 provides an overview table of the relevant licences (manual entry)

Sheet 11 and 12 contain graphic visulations of the data as used in the article
