Figures 3–5. Male of Perdita (Perdita) rhois Cockerell, a tiny species of bee occurring widely in the Sierra Nevada and westward in California and southward into Baja California, Mexico. This is putatively the auspicious species we have to thank for first sparking Mich's fascination with bees — a most exalted honor and making it, at least in terms of its symbolic influence on the subsequent prosperity of melittology, one of the most awe-inspiringly portentous of species among the bees. 3. (Polygonaceae) from Vandeventer Flats, San Jacinto Mts., California.

Cover of Michener's major work on the Australian and South Pacific melittofauna (1965), made possible by a prestigious Fulbright Research award that allowed he and his entire family to spend a year in Australia (1957–1958). As with every project he tackled, Mich worked intensively on this effort, and in 1960 spent two months in the Natural History Museum, London referencing material against types held in their collections. When completed, this monograph launched a new generation of fervent bee biologists in Australia.

Much of the material which formed the basis for this monograph was collected while Mich was deployed to the Gorgas Memorial Laboratory, Panama during the mid-1940s and engaged in work for the U.S. Army. Mich's time in Panama was his first major experience working with a tropical bee fauna and he was greatly aided by advice and identifications from the late Padre Jesus S. Moure (1912–2010), among others.

Figure 21. The cover of Mich's extraordinarily influential, The Social Behavior of the Bees (1974, Harvard University Press). Born of the era in which the foundations of sociobology were set in place (e.g., Wilson, 1975), this book distilled all of what was known regarding the social organization and evolution of societies among bees. It was a particularly powerful text when placed against the backdrop of seminal works that had appeared around the same time on termites (Krishna & Weesner, 1969, 1970) and on social insects in general (Wilson, 1971). It remains unrivaled to this day and immensely relevant. A companion book on the biology and behavior of solitary bees was discussed, according to documents in the University of Kansas Archives, but never undertaken.
