Comprehensive study of antimicrobial polycaprolactone/clay nanocomposite films: preparation, characterization, properties and degradation in simulated body fluid

<p>Even though the biodegradability of polycaprolactone (PCL) and its nanocomposites is lower compared to other biodegradable polyesters, this property and good biocompatibility are used for development of materials for drug delivery with a long-term effect. We prepared novel PCL/clay nanocomposite films with antimicrobials chlorhexidine (CH) or octenidine (OCT) combined with ZnO anchored on vermiculite (VER). The intercalation of CH and OCT into the interlayer of VER/ZnOVER was confirmed by XRD, FTIR and SEM. The organically modified nanofillers compared to VER (&minus;46.0&thinsp;mV) or ZnOVER (&minus;34.9&thinsp;mV) showed a positive &zeta;-potential (+30.7&thinsp;mV (VER_CH), +21.9&thinsp;mV (VER_OCT), +24.6&thinsp;mV (ZnOVER_CH)) indicating a relatively stable materials, except ZnOVER_OCT (+8.6&thinsp;mV), which strongly agglomerated.</p> <p>Thin PCL/clay films were prepared by solvent casting method and the effect of used nanofillers on structural, thermal, mechanical and antimicrobial properties followed by degradation under hydrolytic conditions was studied. The results showed that presence of ZnO significantly decreases thermal and mechanical stability. The nanofillers with the higher hydrophilic character are responsible for the fastest degradation of PCL matrix. Films possessed high antimicrobial efficiency in long time intervals, hence these nanocomposites open new avenues for the possible application of such materials for the drug delivery with a long-term effect.</p>

Transport properties of doped wide band gap layered oxychalcogenide semiconductors Sr2GaO3CuCh, Sr2ScO3CuCh and Sr2InO3CuCh (Ch = S or Se)

<p>The structural, electrical, and optical properties of a series of six layered oxychalcogenides with general formula Sr2<em>M</em>O3Cu<em>Ch</em> where <em>M</em> = Ga, Sc, or In and <em>Ch</em> = S or Se have been investigated. From this set we report the structure and properties of Sr2GaO3CuSe for the first time, as well as the full structural details of Sr2ScO3CuSe, which have not previously been available. A systematic study of the suitability of all the Sr2<em>M</em>O3Cu<em>Ch</em> phases as <em>p</em>-type conductors has been carried out, after doping with both sodium and potassium to a nominal composition of <em>A</em>0.05Sr1.95<em>M</em>O3Cu<em>Ch</em>, (<em>A</em> = Na or K), to increase the hole carrier concentration. Density functional theory calculations were used to determine the electronic band structure and predict the transport properties, while optical properties were determined using UV-vis spectroscopy, and structures confirmed using Rietveld refinement against powder X-ray diffraction data. Room temperature conductivity measurements were carried out on both pristine samples and doped samples, eighteen compositions in total, using four-point probe measurements. We found that the most conductive sample wasK0.05Sr1.95GaO3CuSe, with a measured conductivity of 0.46 Scm&minus;1, collected from a sintered pellet. We have also been able to identify a relationship between the conductivity and the geometry of the copper chalcogenide layer within the Sr2<em>M</em>O3Cu<em>Ch</em> series of compounds. As this geometry can be controlled through the material composition, the identification of this structure-property relationship highlights a route to selection and identification of materials with even higher conductivities.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This repository contains the computational research data generated for *Transport properties of doped wide band gap layered oxychalcogenide semiconductors Sr2GaO3CuCh, Sr2ScO3CuCh and Sr2InO3CuCh (Ch = S or Se).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>## Folder Architecture</p> <p>The folders contain the structures relaxed with hybrid functionals (HSE06), the band structure and the uniform DOS and AMSET calculations for each system.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Investigation of two-dimensional radio-frequency sheath properties using a microscale fluid model

<p>In previous work (Kohno H. and Myra J.R. 2023 Comput. Phys. Commun. 291 108841), we developed a numerical scheme based on a two-dimensional microscale radio-frequency (RF) sheath model with periodically curved wall boundaries. Here, we expand the capability of this scheme through modification of the boundary conditions (BCs) on the conducting walls, which allows the ion flow to turn back to the plasma at locations on the walls where the electromagnetic force on the ions is reversed from its usual direction. Numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the dependences of the surface-integrated admittances on the wall bump height, ion magnetization, ion mobility, and the magnetic field angle, and to visualize the sheath structures in several cases. One of the main results is the ion cyclotron admittance resonance observed under the condition of low ion mobility (high normalized frequency). It is shown that the amplitude of the resonance peak depends on the wall bump height and the ion velocity is reversed on the sides of the bump in an RF cycle for the resonance cases. Furthermore, the differences in the admittances between the one- and two-dimensional microscale models are assessed for the purpose of understanding non-locality of the sheath near the wall surface for the parameters considered in this study. This information will be essential for improving the sheath BC for macroscale calculations in the future.</p>
