The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. Monthly depth to groundwater from wells in the shallow aquifer of the Rio Grande flood plain (Bosque) in New Mexico, USA: 1997-2020

Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program(BEMP). BEMP is a partnership between Bosque School, Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research Station, and the University of New Mexico. Five wells at each BEMP site (33 in total) are used to measure depth to groundwater, which plays a critical role in cottonwood and other vegetation health and are also important to understanding water cycle and evapotranspiration dynamics.

<p>This repository contains the codes and the data used in the study &ldquo;Interpreting the Subsurface Lithofacies at High Lithological Resolution by Integrating Information from Well-log Data and Rock-core Digital Photographs&rdquo;. The codes are used to identify the lithofacies type from rock-core digital photographs (clustering) and to predict the lithofacies from geophysical well-log data (classification). The lithofacies identification process, including feature extraction and clustering, was encoded by MATLAB, and the classification model was encoded by TensorFlow to construct a neural network-based classification model.&nbsp;</p>

Taranaki Basin Curated Well Logs

<p>Machine learning (ML) models are being widely used in the geosciences for various tasks involving well log data, including prediction of missing well log curves, picking of stratigraphic surfaces, facies classification, and segmentation of different rock types. Even though various ML applications have been proposed in the literature, it is difficult to reproduce and advance the prior art without having access to the data and preprocessing steps used. In fact, there is an increasing need for benchmark cases to assess past and future solutions. The present dataset integrates well log data curated from the 2016 New Zealand Petroleum Exploration Public Data Pack.</p>

Permeability of Neotropical agricultural lands to a key native ungulate – are well-connected forests important?

<p>Much of what remains of the Earth's tropical forests is embedded within agricultural landscapes, where forest is reduced and fragmented. As native forest ungulates are critical to maintaining forest function, it is imperative to understand how this functional group responds to declines in forest cover and connectivity resulting from agricultural expansion. We addressed this issue by evaluating selection of forest cover and forest connectivity by a key native ungulate of Neotropical forests, the white-lipped peccary (<i>Tayassu pecari </i>Link 1795<i>, </i>Tayassuidae, Cetartiodactyla), in agricultural landscapes of Brazil. We evaluated selection using compositional analysis at two hierarchical levels, landscape and home range. From 2013 to 2019, we GPS-tracked eight white-lipped peccary herds in Southwest Brazil, resulting in a total of 14,460 GPS locations. We found that herds can live in landscapes with a wide range of forest cover (35-81% of home ranges covered by native forest), with significant, but not strong, selection at the landscape level (p = 0.045). Nevertheless, herds strongly select for forest cover within their home ranges (81-97% of locations within native forest; highly significant selection at the home-range level: p = 0.008). As for connectivity, herds significantly select the largest, most connected forest fragments at the landscape level (p=0.04), but not at the home-range level (p=0.07). Our results support that Neotropical forests within agricultural landscapes need to be well-connected in order to preserve this key native ungulate, and maintain long-term forest function.</p>

<p>Rice seed images taken using a desktop scanner&nbsp;(Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner, Epson America). Irrigation well water in Nebraska: essential nutrient contents and other properties

<p>Water nutrient concentrations and other properties were surveyed by sampling water from 642 irrigation wells in Nebraska. The amount of Ca, Mg, S, Cl, and B applied in irrigation exceeds removal in 15 Mg ha<sup>-1</sup> of corn (<i>Zea mays</i> L.) grain harvest for most wells. Irrigation supply exceeded corn grain harvest removal of K, Mn and Mo for &gt;20% of the wells. The supply of P, Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mo was generally very low but sufficient with some wells to be considered in nutrient management plans. The median level of nitrate N was 4.4 ppm with 25% of the wells having &gt;10 ppm NO<sub>3</sub>-N which is above the suitability limit for human consumption. The agricultural lime equivalent applied with one or two ML of irrigation was enough to neutralize the acidifying effect of 200 kg ha<sup>-1</sup> of fertilizer-N for 70% or 89% of the wells. Nutrient and lime supply was relatively low for Sandhills wells and relatively high for wells in river valleys of &lt;100 ft depth. No wells had excessive Na levels but 0.3% of the wells had salinity levels of concern. A grouping of wells into 11 aquifer, geological formation and well-depth combinations accounted for &gt;20% of the variation for most water properties but much variation occurred within groups. Sampling of the well water is needed for full optimization of nutrient and soil management. Information on nutrients supplied through irrigation should be complemented by regular soil testing and the use of recommended nutrient management guidelines.</p>

Data from: Geologic and geomorphic controls on rockfall hazard: how well do past rockfalls predict future distributions?

To evaluate the geospatial hazard relationships between recent (contemporary) rockfalls and their prehistoric predecessors, we compare the locations, physical characteristics, and lithologies of rockfall boulders deposited during the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence (CES) (n=185) with those deposited prior to the CES (n=1093). Population ratios of pre-CES to CES boulders at two study sites vary spatially from ~5:1 to 8.5:1. This is interpreted to reflect (i) variations in CES rockfall flux due to intra- and inter-event spatial differences in ground motions (e.g. directionality) and associated variations in source cliff responses, (ii) possible variations in the triggering mechanism(s), frequency, flux, record duration, boulder size distributions, and post-depositional mobilization of pre-CES rockfalls relative to CES rockfalls, and (iii) geological variations in the source cliffs of CES and pre-CES rockfalls. On interfluves, CES boulders traveled approximately 100 to 250 m further downslope than prehistoric (pre-CES) boulders, interpreted to reflect reduced resistance to CES rockfall transport due to preceding anthropogenic hillslope de-vegetation. Volcanic breccia boulders are more dimensionally equant, rounded, larger, and traveled further downslope than coherent lava boulders, illustrating clear geological control on rockfall hazard. In valley bottoms, the furthest-traveled pre-CES boulders are situated further downslope than CES boulders due to (i) remobilization of pre-CES boulders by post-depositional processes such as debris flows, and (ii) reduction of CES boulder velocities and travel distances by collisional impacts with pre-CES boulders. A considered earth-systems approach is required when using preserved distributions of rockfall deposits to predict the severity and extents of future rockfall events.

Data from: Ecological drivers of jellyfish blooms – the complex life history of a 'well-known' medusa (Aurelia aurita)

<ol> <li>Jellyfish blooms are conspicuous demographic events with significant ecological and socio-economic impact. Despite worldwide concern about an increased frequency and intensity of such mass occurrences, predicting their booms and busts remains challenging.</li> <li>Forecasting how jellyfish populations may respond to environmental change requires considering their complex life histories. Metagenic life cycles, which include a benthic polyp stage, can boost jellyfish mass occurrences via asexual recruitment of pelagic medusae.</li> <li>Here we present stage-structured matrix population models with monthly, individual-based demographic rates of all life stages of the moon jellyfish <i>Aurelia aurita</i> L. (<em>sensu stricto</em>). We investigate the life stage-dynamics of these complex populations under low and high food conditions to illustrate how changes in medusa density depend on non-medusa stage dynamics.</li> <li>We show that increased food availability can be an important ecological driver of jellyfish mass occurrences, as it can temporarily shift the population structure from polyp- to medusa- dominated. Projecting populations for a winter warming scenario enhanced the booms and busts of jellyfish blooms.</li> <li>We identify demographic key variables that control the intensity and frequency of jellyfish blooms in response to environmental drivers such as habitat eutrophication and climate change. By contributing to an improved understanding of mass occurrence phenomena, our findings provide perspective for future management of ecosystem health.</li> </ol>
