Twelve lines in a page.</p> <p>A treatise on Natural Philosophy, ascribed to the sage BALÎNÛS (بلینوس or بلیناس,<sup>1</sup> <em>i.e.</em> Apollonius of Tyana), who received it from Hermes Trismegistus. It was translated (into Syriac) by the priest SÂKHÎYÛS (<em>i.e.</em> Zachaeus, ساخنوس in this MS.), and is called کتاب العلل, or, originally, الجامع للاشیاء. See De Sacy in Notices et Extraits des Manuscrits de la Biblioth. Nation. iv. 107 sqq.; cf. Cat. Lugd. iii. 166; Mus. Ḥâjjî ‘Abd al-ḥakîm, from a MS. of A.H. 868 [=1462-64 CE]. Completed on 4<sup>th</sup> Rabî’ I., 1148 [=27 July 1735]. Each book (مقالة) has its own conclusion, and the volume ends with a long epilogue by the said Saiyid (fol. 411) و کان-املآء هذه الفقرات من المفتقر الی الله الغنی محمد الحسینی. A splendid ornament on the first page, and gold lines round the others. There precede (foll. 1 and 2), the life of the author, taken from the بحر الجواهر; the introduction of <em>Abu ‘Ubaid</em> (which is given at full length in Cat. Size 8 in. by 4<sup>1/2</sup> in.; foll. 59. Fifteen lines in a page.</p> <p>A treatise on Elixirs and Talismans, called ذخیرة الاسکندر. Cf. Stewart’s Catal. 121 sqq.</p> <p>Preceded by an introduction by MUḤAMMAD B. KHÂLID, the geometrician, giving an account of the alleged origin of the work, which is said to have been translated from the “Greek and Roman languages” (الیونانیة و الرومیة), by order of the Khalif al-Mu’taṣim. The original work was discovered by the writer of this introduction in a Christian church at Amorium, after the capture of the that place. It consisted of 360 leaves, being entirely of gold, and was deposited in a chest of the same material, and declared to be “the Treasure of Alexander”ذخیرة الاسکندر الملک بن فَیْلَقُس (!) ذی القرنین. It had been buried there, after his death, by his disciple Antiochus (انطیوخوس ملک الیونان تلمیذ ملک الملوک الاسکندر ذی القرنین الیونانی).</p> <p>The original preface is by ARISTOTLE (اَرَسْطُوطالیس) and contains a dedication to Alexander. It begins (fol. 4<em>v</em>.): باسم الواحد الواجب الوجود. We are told in it that this is a work of HERMES (الملک هِرْمِس الکبیر), which was discovered by Balînâs (Apollonius, see the preceding no.), and made over by him to Aristotle.</p> <p>It consists of ten chapters:<sup>1</sup> I. (fol. 5<em>v</em>.) فی ذکر اصول و مقدّمات; II. (fol. 12<em>v</em>.) فی ذکر اصول الصنعة و تدبیر الاکسیرات; III. (fol. 23) فی الترکیبات السمّیّة; IV. (fol. 30) فی صنعة التریاق; V. (fol. 33) فی صنعة الحِرْز (!) الطلسمیّة النافعة للامراض العَسِرة البُرْءِ; VI. (fol. 36) فی ذکر خواتیم الکواکب السبعة; VII. (fol. 40<em>v</em>.) فی ذکر فنون شتّی من الطلسمات; VIII. (fol. 48) فی اتّحاد القلوب و تالیف النفوس; IX. (fol. 52<em>v</em>.) فی خواصّ تتعلق بالنبات المستحیلة; X. (fol. 54) فی..خواصّ الحیوان; and it concludes with an epilogue which was added by ALEXANDER.</p> <p>Well written with all the vowel-points. Illustrated with drawings. A.H. 994). See Ḥ. Kh. i. 303, and Cat. Mus. Brit. 627.<sup>2</sup></p> <p>These glosses are dedicated to the Ṣafawî Shâh Ismâ’îl II. (السلطان بن السلطان بن السلطان ابو المظفر شاه اسمعیل الحسینی الصفوی بهادر خان), who reigned from A.H. 983 to 985. Manṣûr, commonly called IBN KAMMÛNAH, a Jewish philosopher (d. A.H. 676). See Ḥ. Kh. i. 303, and regarding other woks of this author, Cat. Bodl. ii. 562, Flügel, Hdss. Wien, ii. 606, Cat. Lugd. iii. 349, etc.</p> <p>In two parts, the first of which (foll. 1-59) contains the Logic, and begins, without an introduction, as follows: قال العبد الفقیر الی رحمة الله تعالی سعد بن منصور بن سعد بن الحسن بن هبة الله بن کمونة وفقه الله لطاعته...احمد الله علی حسن توفیقه<sup>1</sup> لما نزل من السفر الیه منزلة التقدم بالاعداد للراحلة و الزاد. Concludes: فهذا ما اردت اثباته من المنطق و مباحث المنطق کثیرة جدا لکن ما خرج منها عن هذا القدر الذی (قد) اوردته فلیس بمهمّ عند طالبی الحقائق الخ.</p> <p>The second part (foll. 60-174) comprises the Physics and Metaphysics. It is inscribed: القسم الثانی فی علمی الطبیعة و ما قبله مع ما یندرج فیهما من غیرهما.</p> <p>The conclusion begins as follows:</p> <p>فهذا ما تیسر ایراده علی حکم العجلة فی اوقات مختلسة من الشواغل الدنیویة من غیر معاودة تنقیح و لا مراجعة تهذیب الخ.</p> <p>Carefully written, but almost without diacritical points, by..<sup>2</sup> b. ‘Abd al-raḥmân b. ‘Abdallah, a Mâlikî divine. (foll. 179-264) <em>Metaphysics.</em> Begins:</p> <p>الفن الثالث عشر من کتاب الشفاء فی الالهیات</p> <p>This part concludes also (fol. 264) with an epilogue by Saiyid Muḥammad. It was transcribed from a copy of A.H. 897. The aforesaid Muḥammad Ṣâdiḳ finished it at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Delhi">Shâhjahânâbâd</a>, on 2<sup>nd</sup> Rabî’ I., 1154 (فی الثانی من الشهر الثالث من السنة الرابعة بعد العقد الخامس من المائة الثانیة من الالف الثانی من هجرة من لا ثانی له فی الوجود الخ). He concludes with a poem in praise of the work, beginning:</p> <p>تم کتاب هو الجُمانُ وَهْوَ عن الکون ترجمانُ</p> <p>Each of the above parts has an ornament on its first page; the vacant leaves between them are ornamented with gold lines.</p> <p>II. Foll. 266-286. The first part of the author’s abridgement of the preceding work, called النجاة, on Logic. This work has been printed at Rome, 1593, as an appendix to Ibn Sînâ’s <em>Ḳânûn</em>. They are entitled كشف الغين عن شرح حكمة العين.</p> <p>The Long Preface begins: حمدا لمن شد بحکمته متون العلماء و شرح بفضله صدور الفضلاء. . The author states in it that he compiled these annotations only for private use, not for publication. He made use of the glosses (التعليقات) of <em>Mas’ûd</em> <em>Sharwânî</em>,<sup>2</sup> while he usually took no notice of the popular glosses of الفاضل الشيرازی (probably Ḳuṭb al-dîn, see no.498). The preface concludes with a long invocation of ‘Alî.</p> <p>These annotations end with the first book (مقالة) of the حكمة العين. The passages commented on are introduced by قال or قوله.</p> <p>Well Written.
