Macon County, NC Middle School Climate Data
The climate station at the Macon Middle School near Franklin, NC was established in February 2000. The objectives were to: 1) locate a climate station outside of the Coweeta Basin, but within Macon County, North Carolina, measuring air temperature, air humidity, precipitation, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, vapor pressure, and barometric pressure 2) provide students and teachers at the school with a unique teaching tool, and 3) provide the public with an online archive of weather data.
Seasonal analysis comparison of three air-cooling systems in terms of thermal comfort, air quality and energy consumption for school buildings in Mediterranean climates
<p>Efficient air-cooling systems for hot climatic conditions, such as Southern Europe, are required in the context of nearly Zero Energy Buildings, nZEB. Innovative air-cooling systems such as regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, RIEC and desiccant regenerative indirect evaporative coolers, DRIEC, can be considered an interesting alternative to direct expansion air-cooling systems, DX. The main aim of the present work was to evaluate the seasonal performance of three air-cooling systems in terms of air quality, thermal comfort and energy consumption in a standard classroom. Several annual energy simulations were carried out to evaluate these indexes for four different climate zones in the Mediterranean area. The simulations were carried out with empirically validated models. The results showed that DRIEC and DX improved by 29.8% and 14.6% over RIEC regarding thermal comfort, for the warmest climatic conditions, Lampedusa and Seville. However, DX showed an energy consumption three and four times higher than DRIEC for these climatic conditions, respectively. RIEC provided the highest percentage of hours with favorable indoor air quality for all climate zones, between 46.3% and 67.5%. Therefore, the air-cooling systems DRIEC and RIEC have a significant potential to reduce energy consumption, achieving the user’s thermal comfort and improving indoor air quality.</p>
Climate Hazards Data Integration and Visualization for the Climate Adaptations Solutions Accelerator through School-Community Hubs
<p><strong>Community engagement in planning is essential for effective and just climate adaptation. However, historically underserved communities are often difficult to reach through traditional means of soliciting public input. The Climate Adaptation Solutions Accelerator (CASA) through School-Community Hubs project identifies public schools as promising sites for building both community engagement and community capacity for climate adaptation. To serve in this role, schools need information about the intersecting threats climate change poses to the communities they serve. The Climate Hazard Dashboard for California Schools is a platform that maps the current and future risks associated with five climate hazards, including wildfire, extreme heat days, wildfire extreme precipitation, flooding, and sea level rise, for the nearly 10,000 public schools serving Kindergarten through Grade 12 students in California. Each hazard is mapped and visualized at the school level, providing an accessible way for administrators, teachers, students, and neighborhoods to explore data reflecting the climate hazards they face, at a scale relevant to their communities. The dashboard also provides an aggregate summary hazard metric. </strong></p>

Individual and collective school-students' self-efficacy on climate change. Raw data set.
<p>The dataset comprises 12 items on the topic of "self-efficacy on climate change" and additionally some items on person-related information. The items were developed with individual self-efficacy (8 items, iSE1 to iSE8) and collective self-efficacy (4 items, coSE1 to coSE4) in mind. The instruction was: "How do you think about yourself? Please tick to what extent the following statements apply to you" [translated from German]. A six-point Likert-type scale was used as response scale, headed with numbers from 1 to 6, only the ends of the response scale were verbally labelled (1 = "strongly disagree" to 6 = "strongly agree" [translated from German]). The items were used in German. The English translations were added to the dataset in square brackets. Data collection took place at German "Gymnasien" (equivalent to grammar schools) in 2022. The data set includes N = 163 school-students.</p>
