A special glossary to the mathnawî, compiled by the same ‘Abd-allaṭîf bin ‘Abdallâh al-’Abbâsî, who prepared it for his intended revised edition of the text (as exhibited in the three preceding copies), from the Ḳâmûs (see Bodleian Cat., No. 1674), the Ṣurâḥ (ib., Nos. 1645-1649), the Kanz-allughât (ib., No. 1670), the Farhang-i-Jahângîrî, by Mîr Jamâl-aldîn Ḥusain Injû (ib., Nos. 1734-1746), the Kashf-allughât, by ‘Abd-alraḥîm bin Aḥmad Sûr (ib., Nos. 1721-1724), the Madâr-alafâḍil, by Shaikh Ilâhdâd Faiḍî Sirhindî (ib., Nos. 1727 and 1728), the Mu’ayyid-alfuḍalâ, by Shaikh Muḥammad bin Lâd (ib., No. 1720), and a great number of other dictionaries, etc. It is arranged alphabetically in this way, that the first letter constitutes the bâb and the last the faṣl. In most copies of this work there is stated above every word in red ink, whether it is Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Syriac, etc.; ع signifies Arabic ( عربى); ف Persian ( فارسى); ت Turkish ( تركى); س Syriac (سريانى); عف common to Arabic and Persian (كلمۀ که میانۀ عربى و فارسى مشترك است); تف common to Turkish and Persian ( لفظى كه ميانۀ تركى و فارسى مشترك باشد); فه common to Persian and Hindûstânî ( لفظى كه ميانۀ فارسى و هندى مختلطست); and عه common to Arabic and Hindûstânî ( آنچه میانۀ عربی و هندى ملتبس است). Other copies of this glossary are described in Rieu ii. p. 590b, and W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., pp. 230 and 231. Beginning: اين فرهنگیست مشتمل بر حلّ لغات غريبۀ عربيّه و الالفاظ عجيبۀ عجميّۀ مثنوئ مولوئ معنوى الخ. The first word explained in this glossary is استثنا. Collated and annotated throughout. Dated by دلپت راى ابن جيتو جودهرى in Dhû-alḥijjah, A.H. 1051 (A.D. 1642, March). The Laṭâ’if-allughât (which have been lithographed under the title of فرهنگ مثنوى in Lucknow, 1877) end on fol. 182b. Beginning of the preface: عين اوّل در جوامع اطوار شريعت در هفت‘ نهر نهر اوّل سه رشحه‘ رشحۀ اوّل ايمان رشحۀ دوم شهادت رشحۀ سيوم عبادت الخ. The beginning, quoted by Pertsch and Sprenger, is found here on fol. 2b, l. 7: بعد از تقديم وظائف ثناء حضرت واجب الوجود الخ. Beginning of the selections, on fol. 3b, last line: اى كمينه بخششت ملك جهان الخ. The full title of the work occurs on fol. 3a, last line:نام اين لبّ لباب معنوى – انتخاب انتخاب مثنوى That is to say: the title of Ḥusain al-Wâ’iż alkâshifî’s original selections was لباب معنوى, from which these shorter extracts (لبّ) were made. Two other انتخاب مثنوى are noticed in Rieu ii. p. 592b; and W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., pp. 795 and 796. Collated throughout. This copy was finished by Gîsû Râi for his own use, the 2nd of Dhû-alḳa’dah, in the 9th year of Muḥammadshâh’s reign (=1140, A.D. 1728, June 10). A shorter selection of extracts from Jalâl-aldîn Rûmî’s mathnawî, made at the request of some Ṣûfic friends, by Maulânâ Abûbakr alshâshî (مولانا ابوبكر الشاشى), see fol. 1b, l.4, and divided into 63 bâbs. The title appears on fol. 2a, l. 7 (that given on fol. 1a, viz. لبّ لباب مختصر مثنوئ مولوى روم, is incorrect). The first half of one of the oldest commentaries, perhaps the oldest of all, on the mathnawî in form of a detailed analysis of the poem, by Maulânâ Kamâl-aldîn Ḥusain bin Ḥasan of Khwârizm, who died A.H. 840 (A.D. 1436, 1437) or 845 (A.D. 1441, 1442); the first date is given in Ḥ. Khalfa v. p. 375, the second ib., vi. p. 90; comp. on this work, Bodleian Cat., Nos. 666 and 667; Rieu ii. p. 588; W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., pp. 793 and 794, and A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 493. The author had previously compiled a collection of discourses on the mathnawî, entitled كنوز الحقائق فى رموز الدقائق. The present copy, which, like all the copies extant, comprises the first three daftars only, contains neither author’s name nor date; it only gives the title on fol. 6a, ll. 7 and 8, and the name of the prince, to whom the commentary was dedicated, Nâṣir-aldîn Abû-almanâḳib Ibrâhîm Sulṭân, the ruler of Khwârizm, on fol. 5b, l. 13. From other copies we learn that the second daftar was commenced A.H. 834 (A.D. 1430, 1431); the author’s spiritual guide was Khwâjah Abû-alwafâ, who died A.H. 835 (A.D. 1431, 1432), see Rieu, loc. cit. There is also wanting in this copy the preliminary discourse in ten maḳâlas, the headings of which in Persian are given in the Bodleian Cat., loc. cit., and the contents in English by Rieu. Beginning, on fol. 1b: حمد بيحدّ و غايت و ثناى بيعدّ و نهايت حضرت پادشاهى الخ. Introduction ( فاتحة الابواب فى سبب تأليف الكتاب), on fol.4b; containing besides a chapter on the division of men according to their more or less advanced Ṣûfic stage.
