Persian commentaries on ’Urfî’s ḳaṣîdas by Munîr, Mirzâ Jân (the latter styled مفتاح النّكات, and completed A.H. 1073=A.D. 1662, 1663), Ḳuṭb-aldîn (A.H. 1101=A.D. 1689, 1690), and Râjû ‘ulwî (styled نگارنامۀ فیضی , A.H. 1111=A.D. 1699, 1700), are described in. Sprenger, Catal., p. 530); and (with some muḳaṭṭa’ât and tarjî’s) in Lucknow, without a date; a شرح قصائد عرفى and a ديوان عرفى also appeared in Lucknow, 1880; an English translation of selected ḳaṣidas of ‘Urfî was published in Calcutta, 1887. 2.Ghazals, inalphabetical order, onfol. 55b, beginning: افگار ما (other copies سينۀ) تحفۀ مرهم نگیرد خاطر سایۀ گل بر نتابد گوشۀ دستار ما comp. The usual initial poem of this part اى دل راهزن الخ is found here, on fol. 152a, l. 4 ab infra. 4.Rubâ’îs, on fol. 160b, beginning: يا رب نفسى ده كه ثنا پردازم وين نغمه بآهنگ سزا پردازم see No. 1052 in the Bodleian Cat. 5.Majma’-alabkâr ( مجمع الابكار), a mathnawî in imitation of Niżâmî’s Makhzan-alasrâr (but not with the same title, as is wrongly stated in A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 529), on fol. 176b, beginning: بسم الله الرّحمن الرّحيم – موج نخستست زبحر قديم See. Ḥ. Khalfa v. p. 389, No. 11416; Krafft, p. 69; and an additional copy in W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 64, No. 8.c. 6.Farhâd u Shîrîn (فرهاد و شيرين), or, as it is styled in the colophon of the following copy: Khusrau u Shîn, خسرو و شيرين, another mathnawî, on fol. 215b, beginning: خداوندا دلم بى نور تنگست دل من سنگ و کوه طور سنگست Both the prose-preface and the Sâḳînâma (see the following copies) are wanting in this collection. Dated by Shaikh Muḥammad Sa’îd of Bukhârâ, A.H. 1021 (A.D. 1612, 1613); at the end of this copy there appears the same chronogram, which is noticed in G. Flügel i. p. 593, in A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 529, and in Rosen, p. 263, viz.: نكات سحرى و اعجازى (other copies طرفه) اين درج پردازی (other copies برقم) چون گشت مکمّل زرقم (other copies يافت) مجموعه طراز قدس تأريخش گفت اوّل ديوان عرفئ شيرازى   which gives as date for the completion of this collection, A.H. 996 (A.D. 1588), not 986, as Sprenger erroneously states, nor 995, as Flügel asserts, nor 997 or 998, as the transcriber of this copy and the copyist of No. 85 in Rosen’s MSS. add. The number of the ḳaṣîdas is expressed in this ta’rîkh by the units, viz. 1, 6, 4, 6, 1, 1, and 7=26; the number of the ghazals by the tens, viz. 30, 10, 50, 70, 80, 10, 10, and 10=270; the number of the rubâ’îs and ḳiṭ’as by the hundreds, viz. 200, 300, and 200 = 700 (i.e. 380 rubâ’îs and 320 ḳiṭ’as). The further remark of the transcriber of this copy, that this ta’rîkh also gives the date of the poet’s death, is wrong; the proper chronograms for his decease, viz. 999, are استاد البشر (see A. Sprenger, Cat., p. 112, last line) and عرفى جوانه مرگ شدی (quoted in Badâ’ûnî, see Rieu ii. p. 667a). The correspondence of Faiḍî, collected by Nûr-aldîn Muḥammad, the son of Ḥakîm ‘Ain-almulk and nephew of the poet (see fol. 3b, l. 13 sq.), A.H. 1035 (A.D. 1625, 1626), see Rieu ii. p. 792, iii. p. 984, etc.; Elliot, History of India, vi. pp. 147-149. It is styled here simply انشاء فيضى ; the proper title, as given above, is a chronogram for the date of the collection. Ḥakîm ‘Ain-almulk of Shîrâz, the father of the collector, died the 27th of Dhû-alḥijjah, A.H. 1003 (A.D. 1595, Sept. 2), see his biography in Blochmann, Â’în-i-Akbarî, pp. 480 and 481; he had married a sister of Faiḍî and Abû-alfaḍl. The work is divided into five chapters, called لطيفه, viz.: 1.Letters addressed to the Emperor Akbar (عرائض فيّاضى بوالا درگاه خلائق پناه ظلّ الهى شاهنشاه جلال الدّين و الدّنيا اكبر پادشاه), on fol. 7b. 2.Letters addressed to ‘Ulamâs and Ṣûfic Shaikhs (مفاوضات فيضى بشرفاى عظام و علماى علاّم و عرفاى معرفت انتظام ), on fol. 51b. 3.Letters addressed to contemporary physicians (مفاوضات كه بحكماء معاصر قلمى شده), on fol. 93b. 4.Letters addressed to Amîrs, Khâns, etc. ( بامراء عظام و خوانين الكرام), on fol. 116a. 5.Letters addressed to his father, brothers, and other relatives ( رقائمى كه بوالد بزرگوار و اخوان و اقارب قلمى شده), on fol. 129a; the last letters are all addressed to his brother Abû-alfaḍl. Another brother of his was Abû-alkhair. The five laṭîfas are preceded by Faiḍi’s preface to his diwân (see No. 1464 above), beginning here with the initial bait of the first ḳaṣîdah: يا ازلىّ الظّهور يا ابدىّ الخفا الخ . The three manṭûḳas and the khâtimah which, according to Faiḍi’s own statement, were to follow after the five laṭîfas, are wanting in this copy, just as in Rieu’s. The quatrains are arranged alphabetically, and begin: معنى فعل است هر بد و نيكورا در پردۀ قول کرده پنهان اورا The initial rubâ’î of Sprenger’s and Rieu’s copies is not found in this selection. Sanjar came to India A.H. 1000 (A.D. 1591, 1592), where the emperor Akbar bestowed upon him the takhalluṣ Farâghî (used by him in some ghazals); after being imprisoned by Akbar and finally released, he went to Ibrâhîm ‘Âdilshâh’s court in Bijâpûr and died there, A.H. 1021 (A.D. 1612, 1613); comp. Blochmann, Â’în-i-Akbarî, p. 595; Rieu ii. p. 675a; W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 909; A.
