What is Head-Dipping Detection?

Head-dipping — extending the head over the edge of an elevated platform to look down — is a directed exploration behavior on elevated plus mazes and hole-board apparatus. The ratio of protected (from closed arms) to unprotected (from open arms) head dips is a sensitive anxiety index that responds to benzodiazepines, SSRIs, and anxiolytic compounds.

ConductVision is developing automated head-dipping detection using pose estimation and supervised classification. Contact our team to discuss early access or custom classifier training for your research.

Research Applications

Elevated Maze Anxiety

  • EPM — protected vs unprotected head dip ratio
  • Zero maze — head dips at open segment edges
  • Anxiolytic drug screening — increased unprotected head dips
  • Anxiogenic drug effects — suppressed head dipping

Hole-Board Exploration

  • Hole-board test — nose-poke frequency as exploration index
  • Novel object investigation from elevated positions
  • Habituation — head dip decline over repeated exposures

Pharmacological Screening

  • Benzodiazepine dose-response via head dip changes
  • SSRI anxiolytic onset — progressive head dip increase
  • Strain-specific anxiety profiles via head dip patterns
