What is Nest Building Detection?

Nest building is a complex, species-typical behavior scored on the Deacon 5-point scale — from untouched nestlet (1) through partial shredding (2–3) to a fully enclosed nest (5). Nest quality correlates with hippocampal integrity, prion disease progression, and general welfare, making it a non-invasive functional biomarker.

ConductVision is developing automated nest building detection using pose estimation and supervised classification. Contact our team to discuss early access or custom classifier training for your research.

Research Applications

Hippocampal Function

  • Deacon nestlet shredding protocol — hippocampal lesion sensitivity
  • Prion disease — early nest building decline as prodromal marker
  • Alzheimer's models — progressive nestlet use reduction

Welfare Assessment

  • Thermoregulatory nest quality in cold environments
  • Post-surgical recovery — nest building as welfare indicator
  • Environmental enrichment — nesting material preferences

Genetic Phenotyping

  • Strain comparison — nest building capacity across inbred lines
  • Transgenic model characterization — nest score as functional readout
  • Maternal nesting — pup retrieval and nest maintenance
