Sniffing is the primary mode of environmental investigation in rodents, mediating object recognition, social identification, and spatial mapping through olfactory cues. Quantifying directed vs undirected sniffing provides insight into attentional state, olfactory function, and exploratory motivation.

ConductVision's extensible behavior classifier uses pose estimation features fed into a Random Forest pipeline. The system identifies sniffing behavior through characteristic nose-point oscillations, head-bobbing patterns, and proximity to objects of interest — distinguishing active olfactory investigation from passive proximity with high temporal resolution.
