Short commentary on and glossary to Sa’dî’s Gulistân, composed by Uwais bin ‘Alâ-aldîn, known as Âdam, a pupil of Khwâjah Abû-alfaiḍ Abû-alfaḍl Amîr-aldîn Shâh Ni’mat-allâh Muḥammad bin Muḥammad al-Ḥasanî, and dedicated to the Bahmanî Sulṭân of the Dakhan, Maḥmûdshâh bin Muḥammadshâh (who reigned A.H. 887-924=A.D. 1482-1518, see above , No. 449). According to the last words in No. 3338 (1179 in this Cat.), the work was completed by the author on the day عاشور, i.e. the 10th of Muḥarram, A.H. 900 (A.D.1494, Oct. 11). It is divided into two ḳisms, the first ḳism being a glossary, arranged alphabetically, of the difficult words (قسم اوّل مبوّب از حروف مقطّعات در بيان لغات), the last letter constituting the bâb, the first the faṣl or subdivision; the second ḳism containing an explanation of difficult phrases, verses of the Ḳurân, traditions and sayings of Shaikhs, Arabic baits and invocations of God, etc., which occur in the Gulistân (قسم دوم در تفسير و معانئ آيات و كلام قدسى و احاديث و اقوال و اُدعيّات و اشعار تازى كه در كتاب گلستان مذكور است.) Beginning:فاتحه مر فتّاحى را كه افتتاح كلام خود بفاتحة الكتاب مخصوص گردانيد الخ . First ḳism, on fol. 6b; second ḳism, on fol. 57b. The copy ends on fol. 69b, and is dated the 6th of Sha’bân, A.H. 1052 (A.D. 1642, Oct. 30). On ff. 71b-75a there are written by another hand some fragments of theological tracts in Arabic, on Muḥammad, the Ḳurân, etc. No. 104, ff. 75, ll. 13; Naskhî; size, 71/2 in. by 41/4 in.

This paraphrase is divided into five faṣls, the first of which comprises the verses of the Ḳurân (در كتاب و آيات مجيد); the second, the traditions (در احاديث عظيم); the third, the sayings of the Shaikhs (در قول مشايخ); the fourth, all the rest of the Arabic verses (در اشعار عربيّه); and the fifth, whole Arabic phrases and sentences (در لغات و كلمات تامّات). The third and fifth of these faṣls are entirely missing in this copy. The first begins on fol. 250b, the second on fol. 252a, and the fourth on fol. 253b. A short Persian paraphrase of the difficult Arabic and Persian verses, the sentences of the Ḳurân, traditions of the Prophet, Sayings of other great Shaikhs, and a great many single words, especially of Arabic origin, which occur in Sa’di’s Gulistân, composed by Junaid bin ‘Abdallâh, and beginning: الحمد لله على نعمائه و الصّلوة على رسوله و السّلام على اصحابه قال الخ. It is divided into three ḳisms: قسم اوّل اشعار عربى و بعضى فارسئ مشكل‘ قسم دويم در مركّبات معانئ بعضى اقوال اكابر و حديث نبوى و كلام ربّانى‘ قسم سيوم در لغات مفردات و حروف تهجّى‘ The third ḳism begins on fol. 158a. The Persian paraphrase is an interlinear one, and written in much smaller characters than the original words and phrases. Finished the 15th of Rajab, in the fourteenth year of Muḥammadshâh’s reign (=A.H. 1145, A.D. 1733, Jan. 1). No. 1481, ff. 149b-171, ll. 18; Nasta’lîḳ; size, 6¾ in. by 3½ in.

Every bâb of the Gulistân comprises in this commentary five explanatory parts, viz. 1. verses of the Ḳurân (آيات الهى); 2. traditions of the Prophet, sayings of the Shaikhs, and Arabic proverbs (احاديث نبوى و اقوال مشايخ و امثال عرب); 3. Arabic verses (اشعار عربيّه); 4. Persian verses (ابيات فارسيّه); 5.difficult Arabic and Persian words and phrases, in alphabetical order (لغات عربيّه و فارسيّه برعايت ترتيب حروف). No compiler’s name appears. Dated, as it seems, the 9th of Ṣafar (? The word is entirely misspelt here), in the first year of Aḥmadshâh’s reign (=A.H. 1162, A.D. 1749, Jan. 29). A seal, however, of the first owner, Ghulâm Muḥyî-aldîn Rafî, bear the earlier date A.H. 1155 (A.D. 1742, 1743), on fol. 18b, another of the same is found at the end of the copy. It consists of ḳaṣîdas and ghazals, begins, on fol. 65b, زبان كه بر در معنى الخ , and is incomplete at the end, in consequence of a lacuna after fol. 91. 3.Wasaṭ-alḥayât, the second dîwân, defective at the beginning, in consequence of the same lacuna; it opens on fol. 92a in the middle of the same prose-preface, which in No. 1950 (1188 in this Cat.) is prefixed to the second dîwân, and which differs entirely from the usual one; the first words, ميان چندين غوّاصان گوهر سخنم بروى آب الخ , correspond to No. 1950, fol. 53b, l. 4 ab infra. Fol. 95 must be placed before fol. 94. Beginning of the poetry, on fol. 94b: حمد رانم بر زبان الخ . This dîwân consists here of ḳaṣîdas, ghazals, ḳiṭ’as, short mathnawîs (the first of which begins, on fol. 142b: (چون همای زایتش پرواز کرد الخ, a second large collection of ghazals (beginning, on fol. 151b margin: اى بدرماندگى پناه همه الخ, see Bodleian Cat., top of col. 554), and rubâ’îs (beginning on fol. 223b: صانع ملكى كه ملك هستى پرداخت الخ , see Bodleian Cat., loc. cit.). 4.Ghurrat-alkamâl, the third dîwân; beginning of the preface, on fol. 232b: الله اطلع الغرر من مطلع الخ. Beginning of the poetry, on fol. 264a: چه زهره خاك مسكين را الخ This ḳaṣîdah is preceded by the same two initial baits of the ‘Silsilah’ as in No. 1186, 2: چون آفتاب روشن الخ . This dîwân consists here of ḳaṣîdas, tarkîbbands, ḳiṭ’as, mathnawîs (the first of which, on fol. 343a, is the مفتاح الفتوح, see Nos. 1186, 11; 1187, 13; and 1188, 14; the second, on fol. 355b, agrees with the first short mathnawi in No. 1187, 14), ghazals (the first of which, on fol. 369b margin, begins : اى زخيال ما برون الخ, see the remarks in Nos. 1187. 4, and 1188, 5), and rubâ’îs (beginning, on fol. 403a:پاكست خداوند الخ, see ibidem). No date; but a seal from A.H. 1167 and an entry from A.H. 1168 (A.D. 1753-1755) are found on fol. 1a. The title given to this copy, كلّيّات امير خسرو, is incorrect, as it only contains the four dîwâns. No. 356, ff. 418, 2 centre-coll., each ll. 17, and a third on the margin ll. 26; Nasta’lîḳ; an illuminated frontispiece at the beginning of the first, second, and third dîwân; size 107/8 in. by 65/8 in.

This copy of Amîr Khusrau’s Kulliyyât is much younger than the preceding one, but considerably richer in contents. It consists of the following parts: A.Centre-columns. 1.Tuḥfat-alṣighar (تحفة الصغر), or the poems of youth, the first of Amîr Khusrau’s dîwâns, which was complete about A.H. 670 or 671 (A.D. 1272), with a preface in prose. Beginning of the preface, on fol.1b: حمدى كه از اوّل زادن زاد وجود بود و تناى كه از شير خوراگى الخ. Beginning of the poetry, on fol. 4b: خداى عزّ و جل ذو الجلال كن فيكون برى زحيرت و مستغنى از چرا وچون It consists of ḳaṣidas, ḳiṭ’as (beginning on fol. 48b), and a short mathnawî, which begins on fol. 50b:هى هى اى تيره راى الخ; other copies are described in Rieu ii. pp. 609b and 613a, and A. Sprenger, p. 467. 2.Wasaṭ-alḥayât (وسط الحيات), or poems of middle life, the second of Amîr Khusrau’s dîwâns, which was completed about A.H. 685 (A.D. 1286), with a preface in prose. Beginning of the preface, on fol. 55b: بفضل الله قد سطرت هذه الصفحات و جعلتها واسطة لبقاء الذات بعد الممات الخ. Beginning of the poetry, on fol. 63b: حمد رانم بر زبان لله ربّ العالمين الخ; see the preceding copy , No. 3.This diwân consists of ḳaṣîdas, tarkîbbands (beginning on fol. 123b), and ḳiṭ’as (on fol. 139b). Blanks on fol. 83. Other copies are described in Rieu ii. pp. 610a and 613a; Bodleian Cat., No. 753, and A. Sprenger, Catal., pp. 467 and 468. 3.Ghurrat-alkamâl (غرّة الكمال), or the poems of maturity, the third of Amîr Khusrau’s dîwâns, see Nos. 1. And 2 in the preceding copy; the preface begins here thus, on fol. 145b:غرّۀ كمال انسانى از ديباچۀ احمد (حمد read) مخترع است الخ. Beginning of the poetry, on fol. 194b: چه (؟ چو) زهره خاك مسكين را الخ, agreeing with the second ḳaṣîdah of this dîwân in the preceding copy. It contains ḳaṣîdas, tarkîbbands (on fol. 292a sq.), and ḳiṭ’as (on fol. 302a sq.). A blank on fol. 149a. 4.Baḳiyya-i-naḳiyyah (بقيّۀ نقيّه), or the poems of old age, the fourth of Amîr Khusrau’s dîwâns, completed A.H. 718 (A.D. 1318), with a preface in prose. Beginning of the preface, on fol. 317b: حمدى كه بقيّۀ نقيّۀ حيوة در تحرير آن بر جرائد وجود بشمار آيد و ثناى حليه الخ. Beginning of the poetry, on fol. 328a: زبان كه بر در معنى كليد گفتار است زبهر شکر و سپاس یکی جهاندار است This dîwan (which is called in A. Sprenger, Catal., نقيّۀ بقيّه, and in Cat. des MSS. et Xylographes كتاب بقيّه و نقيّه) contains ḳaṣîdas, tarkîbbands (on fol. 377a sq.), short mathnawîs (on fol. 385b sq.), ḳiṭ’as (on fol. 390a sq.), and a very extensive collection of ghazals, followed by a series of rubâ’îs. The ghazals (which have here the special heading of بقيّۀ نقيّه) are arranged alphabetically, except the first twelve poems, and begin, on fol. 407b: اى زخيال ما برون در تو خيال كى رسد با صفت تو عقل را لاف كمال كى رسد This initial poem is the first ghazal of the غرّة الكمال or third dîwân in Nos. 754 and 755 of the Bodleian Cat., and of the various selections from Khusrau’s dîwâns and ghazals in Nos. 760 and 763-765 of the same; it appears likewise as beginning in the general collections, described in W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., pp. 714, 831, and 832, and in J. Aumer, p. 21. The rubâ’îs begin, on fol. 824b: پاکست خداوند كريم اكبر الخ, likewise agreeing with the initial quatrain in the third diwân in Nos. 754 and 755 of the Bodleian Cat., and in the general collection, No. 758, of the same. Blanks on ff. 323, 341, 489b, 611, and 629; a lacuna besides after fol. 781. Other copies of this dîwân are described in Rieu ii. pp. 610b and 613a; Bodleian Cat., No. 756; A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 468; W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 833, and Cat. des MSS. et Xylographes, p. 351. These four dîwâns have been printed, lucknow, 1874. The fifth dîwân, styled نهاية الكمال, and containing poems of the last years of Amîr Khusrau’s life (see Rieu ii. p. 613b, and Bodleian Cat., No. 757), is Not found in the India Office Collections. B.Margin-column. 5.Maṭla’-alanwâr (مطلع الانوار), on fol. 1b, beginning: خطبۀ قدسست بملك قديم – بسم الله الرّحمن الرّحيم see No.6 in the preceding copy. Fol. 83 is left blank. 6.Khusrau u Shîrîn (خسرو و شيرين), on fol. 97b, beginning as in No. 7 of the preceding copy. Fol. 149 left blank. 7.Lailâ u Majnûn ( ليلى و مجنون), on fol. 217a beginning as in No. 8 of the preceding copy. 8.Hasht Bihisht (هشت بهشت), on fol. 292b, beginning as in No. 9 of the preceding copy. 9.Â’îna-i-Iskandarî (آئينۀ اسكندرى), on fol. 391a, beginning as in No. 10 of the preceding copy. The greater part of fol. 489b is left blank, but there seems to be no interruption in the text. 10.Ḳirân-alsa’dain (قران السعدين), on fol. 520b, beginning as in No. 5 of the preceding copy. 11.Nuskha-i-Khiḍrkhânî (نسخۀ خضرخانى), i.e. Ḳiṣṣa-i-Khiḍrkhân u Duwalrânî ( قصّۀ خضرخان و دولرانى), or as the author himself styles it: Duwalrânî Khiḍrkhân (دولرانى خضرخان), see Rieu ii. p. 612b, the love-story of Khiḍrkhân, son of Sulṭân ‘Alâ-aldîn Muḥammadshâh Khiljî (reigned A.H. 695-715 or 716 =A.D. 1296-1316, see No. 2 in the preceding copy), with Duwalrânî, the daughter of the Râjab of Gujarârt, completed A.H. 715, 6th of Dhû-alḳa’dah (A.D. 1316, Feb.1). It is often merely called قصّۀ خضر خانى, كتاب خضر خانى, or even خضرخانى, and also bears the title of ‘Ishḳiyyah (عشقيّه), see below, No. 1216. Beginning, on fol. 623a: سر نامه بنام آن خداوند كه دلها را بخوبان داد پيوند Ff. 629 (partly), 646a-653b, and 678a-701a are left blank. Comp. on this poem Rieu ii. pp. 612, 617, and 618; Bodleian Cat. It was completed end of Jumâdâ II, A.H. 718 (A.D. 1318, Aug. 28), comp. Rieu ii. p. 612b; Bodleian Cat., No. 776, and Elliot’s History of India, iii. p. 557. Where an analysis of the poem is given. Beginning, on fol. 701b: خدا را كنم بر سر نامه ياد كه بر بنده درهاى معنى گشاد It breaks off on fol. 781b in consequence of a lacuna. 13.Miftâḥ-alfutûḥ, incomplete at the beginning, in consequence of the same lacuna; the first bait which appears here, on fol. 782a: همى زد تيره سر برآسمانها ستاره چشم ميزد بر سنانها corresponds to the first distich on fol. 483a margin in the preceding copy. 14.A series of short mathnawîs, containing poetical descriptions of various kinds; the first, on fol. 798a, is headed:اين نامه بر كسيست كه جانرا زدوستيش حلّ كرده ام بآتش و بنوشته اين مقال (supplied from No. 2073, 1192 in this Cat.), and begins: اين نامه كه جان درو سرشتم هر حرف بخون دل نبشتم corresponding to the first mathnawî in the third dîwân of the Bodleian Cat., No. 754, fol. 216a; the second, on fol. 805b, is headed: اين بيتهاى قصر كه مهر خانه كرد رغبت درو در آيد و بيرون رود چنان. Other headings on ff. 806b, 811b, 813a (bis), 813b, 814b, 815a, 815b, and 817b; the last of these mathnawîs concludes on fol. 825a; the remaining leaves are left blank. This copy is dated the 2nd of Rabî’-alawwal, A.H. 1008 (A.D. 1599, Sept. 22). A fihrist on the fly-leaf.
