Protocol and Trial Manager

Structured experimental protocols with automated phase transitions

Define habituation, training, and test phases with inter-trial intervals, hardware triggers, and stimulus timing — entire multi-phase experiments run unattended.

The problem

Multi-phase experiments require constant manual intervention

Fear conditioning requires habituation, then tone-shock pairings, then context/cue tests. Water maze needs multi-day training with varying platform positions. Each phase requires manually starting/stopping recording, timing intervals, and changing apparatus settings.

  • Starting and stopping recording between phases wastes time and introduces timing errors
  • Inter-trial intervals timed by stopwatch vary across sessions and experimenters
  • Apparatus settings (shock, light, tone) must be changed manually between phases
The solution

Define once, run unattended

Protocol manager specifies the complete experimental sequence: phase order, duration, ITI, hardware triggers (tone, shock, light), and data collection parameters. Protocols run automatically from start to finish.

  • Visual protocol editor: drag phases into sequence with duration and ITI for each
  • Hardware trigger scheduling: TTL and serial commands fire at precise protocol-defined times
  • Template library: pre-built protocols for FC, water maze, NOR, EPM, and other standard paradigms
