Who holds what

Four things that can change hands separately.

In an instrument order, ownership, customs entry, custody and regulated possession can each sit with a different party. We name each one for your order before anything ships.

  • Title

    Who owns the goods, and when ownership passes to your institution.

  • Customs entry

    Who is the importer of record and files the entry with the broker.

  • Physical custody

    Who holds each package on each leg: shipper, carrier, broker, courier.

  • Regulated possession

    Whose radioactive materials license covers the source at your site. Your RSO confirms it for this item.

Your institution and its customs broker decide any duty treatment. Radioactive material is supplied only where the receiving institution and proposed order meet applicable requirements.

Instrument orders

Do I need to know the manufacturer or model to start?

No. Start with the measurement you need. The maker and model become required when we review compatibility for a specific device.

Can the instrument and its source ship separately?

Sometimes. Some makers ship the source in its own package on a different route. Your responsibility sheet names each leg and its carrier, and each leg is tracked on its own.

Who is the importer of record?

It depends on the order. The importer of record, U.S. consignee, shipper and customs broker are named in your responsibility sheet before anything ships.

Is a research instrument import duty-free?

Not automatically. Some institutions apply for a duty exemption for a specific scientific instrument. Your institution and its customs broker decide eligibility and timing. We do not promise a tariff outcome.

When does our radiation safety officer get involved?

After we confirm a supplier path. Your RSO reviews the exact proposed source before your purchasing office issues a PO.

Can installation be part of the order?

Yes, when the maker or a qualified partner installs the instrument. The installation provider is named in your order documents.
