The Portable Multiparameter Meter (BIO-0377) is a handheld analytical instrument designed for simultaneous measurement of multiple water quality parameters in laboratory and field environments. This compact device measures pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), resistivity, and oxidation-reduction potential (with optional ORP probe), providing researchers with comprehensive water chemistry analysis capabilities in a single portable unit.
The instrument features a pH measurement range of -2.000 to 20.000 pH with 0.001 pH resolution, conductivity measurements up to 200 mS/cm, TDS measurements from 0 to 1000.0 g/L with adjustable TDS factor, and resistivity measurements from 5.000 to 100.0 MΩ·cm. Temperature compensation is integrated with a range of 0-100°C and ±0.2°C accuracy. The portable design allows for real-time water quality assessment in diverse research applications where multiple parameters must be monitored simultaneously.
How It Works
The multiparameter meter employs multiple sensor technologies to simultaneously measure distinct water chemistry parameters. pH measurement utilizes a glass electrode system where the potential difference across a pH-sensitive glass membrane correlates with hydrogen ion concentration according to the Nernst equation. The integrated reference electrode provides a stable potential against which pH measurements are compared.
Conductivity measurement operates through a four-electrode conductivity cell that applies an alternating current between two drive electrodes while measuring voltage across two sense electrodes. This configuration eliminates polarization effects and provides accurate conductivity readings across the full measurement range. Total dissolved solids (TDS) values are calculated from conductivity measurements using an adjustable conversion factor to account for different ion types in solution.
Resistivity is calculated as the reciprocal of conductivity, while oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) measurements require an optional platinum electrode that measures the solution's electron activity relative to a reference electrode. Automatic temperature compensation adjusts all readings to account for temperature effects on electrode response and solution properties.

Comparison Guide
| Feature | This Product | Typical Alternative | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| pH Measurement Range | -2.000 to 20.000 pH range | Many portable meters offer 0-14 pH range | Extended range accommodates extreme pH samples encountered in industrial and research applications. |
| Conductivity Range | 0-200 mS/cm measurement capability | Entry-level models often limited to lower conductivity ranges | Wide range enables measurement of both pure water and high-ionic-strength solutions. |
| TDS Measurement | 0-1000.0 g/L with adjustable factor | Fixed TDS factors in basic instruments | Adjustable factor provides accurate TDS calculations for different sample compositions. |
| Temperature Compensation | 0-100°C ATC range with ±0.2°C accuracy | Limited temperature ranges in basic models | Wide temperature compensation range ensures accuracy across diverse measurement conditions. |
| Resistivity Measurement | 5.000-100.0 MΩ·cm direct measurement | Calculated values or separate instrumentation required | Direct resistivity measurement capability eliminates need for separate instrumentation in water purity applications. |
This multiparameter meter combines wide measurement ranges, adjustable TDS factors, and comprehensive temperature compensation in a portable format. The instrument's extended pH range and direct resistivity measurement capability distinguish it from basic portable meters that typically offer more limited ranges and fewer simultaneous parameters.
Practical Tips
Perform two-point pH calibration using buffers that bracket your expected sample pH range rather than always using the same buffer set.
Why: Calibration accuracy is optimized when standards are close to sample values.
Verify conductivity calibration with multiple standard solutions across your expected measurement range.
Why: Conductivity response may be non-linear at extreme ranges requiring multi-point calibration.
Replace pH electrode storage solution regularly and ensure electrodes remain hydrated between measurements.
Why: Dehydrated glass electrodes exhibit slow response times and measurement drift.
Clean conductivity sensors with appropriate solvents to remove coating buildup that affects measurement accuracy.
Why: Contaminated conductivity cells provide erroneously high readings due to surface deposits.
Allow sufficient time for readings to stabilize, particularly in low-conductivity samples where equilibration is slower.
Why: Premature reading collection leads to measurement errors and poor reproducibility.
Adjust the TDS factor based on your specific sample type and validate against gravimetric TDS measurements when possible.
Why: Default TDS factors may not accurately reflect the ion composition of specialized samples.
Check for air bubbles in conductivity cells and ensure complete electrode immersion when measurements appear unstable.
Why: Incomplete electrode contact with sample creates measurement artifacts and instability.
Record temperature along with all measurements since compensation algorithms may not perfectly correct for all temperature effects.
Why: Temperature documentation enables post-measurement validation and troubleshooting of unexpected results.
