A 22-megapixel camera on a folding copy stand photographs the leaves from above. The leaves lie on a dimmable light box. An anti-reflective cover plate presses them flat and reduces reflections.
The leaf analysis software calibrates each photo automatically. It measures each leaf's length, width, area, perimeter, length-to-width ratio and shape factor. It measures hole area and perimeter, lesion area and the area missing from damaged leaves. It counts the teeth on the leaf margin. It also grades leaf color.
In the software, you can fill holes to get the intact leaf area. You can also cut off the petiole to measure the blade alone. For leaves with complex outlines, such as lobed leaves, you can redraw the length and width or trace a perimeter or area yourself.
You can photograph several leaves at once. The software measures each leaf and reports their average. One batch run can analyze more than 100 photos. The software saves each analyzed photo with its results.
You can export the results to a new spreadsheet or add them to an existing one. You can also export each photo with its measurement marks. The software runs on a PC.
To measure leaves without picking them, use our portable leaf area meter.

How does it differ from our portable leaf area meter?
Our portable meter scans one leaf at a time without picking it, so you can follow the same leaf as it grows. This system photographs several detached leaves at once. It also measures perimeter, shape factor, holes, lesions, teeth and leaf color.
What is the largest leaf it can measure?
It measures leaves up to 400 mm long and 280 mm wide. For longer leaves, such as maize, cut each leaf into pieces that fit and add up their areas.
Can it measure several leaves in one photo?
Yes. Lay them out so they do not touch. The software measures each leaf and reports their average.
