Zone and Spatial Analysis

Configurable spatial analysis across any arena layout

Define zones as grids, quadrants, or custom polygons — then extract dwell time, entry counts, and transition matrices automatically.

The problem

Fixed zone definitions limit experimental flexibility

Most tracking tools provide only preset zone layouts — center/periphery for open field, left/right for place preference. Custom zone shapes require manual post-processing or are not supported.

  • Predefined zones cannot match non-standard arena configurations
  • Grid-based analysis requires exporting raw data and scripting
  • Zone transition analysis is not available without custom code
The solution

Any zone layout defined within the interface

ConductVision supports configurable grids (any row/column count), quadrant detection, and custom polygon regions of interest — all defined in the GUI and applied to frame-level data.

  • Draw custom polygon zones directly on the arena image
  • Grid analysis with configurable row and column counts
  • Automatic transition matrix between all defined zones
Endpoints

Spatial metrics computed per zone with frame-level resolution.

Zone dwell time and entry count

Zone dwell time and entry count

Time spent in each defined zone, number of entries, and latency to first entry — reported per zone per subject.

Spatial heatmaps

Spatial heatmaps

Position density maps showing occupancy distribution across the arena. Exportable as images or raw density matrices.

Zone transition matrix

Zone transition matrix

Frequency and probability of transitions between all zone pairs. Reveals spatial preferences and sequential patterns in exploration.

Applications

Spatial analysis is fundamental to most behavioral paradigms.

Open field

Thigmotaxis and center avoidance

Quantify center vs. periphery time as an anxiety-related measure. Grid analysis reveals spatial patterns beyond the simple center/edge dichotomy.

Measures
  • Center time ratio
  • Thigmotaxis index
  • Grid cell occupancy
Conditioned place preference

Compartment preference scores

Define drug-paired and vehicle-paired compartments with precise polygon boundaries. Automatically compute preference scores across conditioning and test sessions.

Measures
  • Preference score
  • Compartment dwell time
  • Transition frequency
Morris water maze

Quadrant analysis and platform proximity

Standard quadrant occupancy analysis during probe trials. Configure platform zone radius to measure proximity and crossing count.

Measures
  • Target quadrant time
  • Platform crossings
  • Proximity to platform
Elevated plus maze

Arm-specific occupancy

Define open arms, closed arms, and center zone. Extract time, entries, and head-dip events per zone for anxiety-related behavioral profiling.

Measures
  • Open arm time
  • Closed arm entries
  • Center zone latency
