Automatic Arena Calibration

One-click spatial calibration for accurate real-world measurements

Enter known arena dimensions and ConductVision auto-detects arena edges, computes the pixel-to-centimeter conversion factor, and persists the calibration across sessions.

The problem

Manual calibration wastes time and introduces measurement error

Placing a ruler in the frame, counting pixels, and computing a conversion factor is tedious and must be repeated whenever the camera moves. Errors in this step propagate to every distance and velocity measurement in the experiment.

  • Manual ruler placement requires physical access to the arena during setup
  • Pixel-counting introduces human error that propagates to all spatial measurements
  • Camera repositioning invalidates previous calibration — requiring complete recalibration
The solution

Enter dimensions, get calibrated measurements

Enter the known arena dimensions (diameter for circular, length/width for rectangular). ConductVision detects the arena boundaries in the image and computes the conversion factor automatically. Calibration persists across sessions until the camera is moved.

  • Automatic arena edge detection from the video frame — no ruler needed
  • Calibration stored per arena configuration and reloaded for each session
  • Multi-camera calibration for 3D tracking setups with cross-camera alignment

Calibration-dependent paradigms

Locomotion

Accurate distance and velocity

Total distance traveled and instantaneous velocity in cm and cm/s — comparable across different camera setups and arena sizes.

Measures
  • Distance (cm)
  • Velocity (cm/s)
  • Acceleration (cm/s2)
Zone analysis

Real-world zone dimensions

Define zones in centimeters rather than pixels — a "2 cm proximity zone" means the same thing regardless of camera height.

Measures
  • Zone area (cm2)
  • Proximity distance (cm)
  • Zone entry threshold (cm)
Multi-arena

Cross-arena comparability

Different arena sizes and camera heights produce different pixel scales. Calibration normalizes all data to real-world units for direct comparison.

Measures
  • Normalized distance
  • Comparable velocity
  • Standardized zone metrics
Longitudinal studies

Persistent calibration across sessions

Weeks-long studies do not require recalibration unless the camera is physically moved. Saves setup time and eliminates calibration drift.

Measures
  • Calibration stability
  • Session-to-session consistency
  • Re-calibration trigger
