How It Works

Syringe filtration operates through size exclusion filtration, where the polyethersulfone membrane acts as a physical barrier with precisely controlled pore structure. The 0.45 μm pore size retains particles, bacteria, and other contaminants larger than the pore diameter while allowing smaller molecules and ions to pass through into the filtrate.

The polyethersulfone membrane material provides hydrophilic surface properties that minimize protein adsorption and enable efficient flow rates with aqueous solutions. The membrane structure consists of asymmetric pores that increase in size from the upstream surface to the downstream surface, providing depth filtration that maximizes dirt-holding capacity and extends filter life.

During filtration, applied pressure forces the sample through the membrane matrix, with contaminants being retained on the upstream surface and within the pore structure. The sterile construction ensures that no additional microbial contamination is introduced during the filtration process.
