- Scientists use software for facial recognition to establish gene interactions.
- The new method can revolutionize medical research and our understanding of disease development.
About the Research
The new gene interactions research comes from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Also, the results from the study are available through the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
Gene Interactions and Deep Learning
Researchers from CMU want to see if they can adapt deep learning techniques found in photo-based applications for research in genetics. That is, they want to use the software for facial recognition to help them determine gene interactions. More precisely, they want to adapt Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to help them in their study goals.
The need for this comes out of the fact that the human body has around 20,000 genes. Mapping their network is hard because of their quantity and the continuous interactions they have. However, computers can now help us resolve this issue because they are much faster and more precise at calculating.
Furthermore, scientists believe, they can come to understand the relationship of disease and genetics. Also, it will be possible to determine the genetic pathway present in the development of diseases.
