The Four Arms Plus Maze is a maze shaped like a plus sign, designed specifically for research purposes. Developed by Rory D. Spence and colleagues in 2009, it was used to evaluate motor and cognitive abilities in songbirds following cerebellar lesions.
The maze features a white acrylic frame and is covered with an aluminum screen. Although the birds were capable of flying within the maze, they usually navigated it by hopping in search of food. To start each trial, removable cardboard flaps were placed at the entrances of the maze’s arms to prevent the birds from accessing them prematurely. These flaps were then removed to begin the experiment.
Mazeengineers provides the Four Arms Plus Maze for research use.
