Description

The Diamond Maze was utilized in an experiment conducted by Hassan M. H. Mustafa et al. (2018) to investigate binary choice behavior between two nests among ants.

In the experiment, the maze featured three nests. Initially, two nests were positioned adjacent to each other along one wall of the test arena. One nest housed tethered ants, while the other contained five strings but no ants. The third nest served as the home nest, housing the colony from which the tethered ants were originally taken. This home nest was situated against the center of the wall opposite to the location of the target nests.

Ant colonies initially resided in the home nest, from which the roof was removed to prompt migration. The colonies were then given the choice between the two target nests, which were identical in design but differed in the materials they contained.
