The Judgement Bias Apparatus is a large-scale behavioral testing system designed to evaluate affective and emotional states in pigs through cognitive bias assessment. This rectangular arena apparatus measures emotional valence by testing animals' responses to ambiguous stimuli, providing objective measures of optimism and pessimism that reflect underlying welfare states.

The system features a 3.6 x 2.4 meter rectangular arena connected to a 1.2 x 1.2 meter start box via an antechamber, with 40 cm wide goal boxes equipped with food bowls. The apparatus utilizes a guillotine door system to control animal movement and enables researchers to assess how emotional states influence cognitive processing and decision-making in swine models.

How It Works

The Judgement Bias Apparatus operates on the principle that emotional states influence cognitive processing and interpretation of ambiguous stimuli. Animals in positive emotional states tend to interpret ambiguous cues optimistically, while those in negative states show pessimistic biases. The system presents spatial cues at various locations between established positive and negative reference points.

During testing, subjects are trained to associate specific locations with positive (food reward) or negative (no reward) outcomes. Once training is complete, probe trials present ambiguous intermediate locations. Response latencies and approach behaviors to these intermediate positions reveal the animal's cognitive bias - faster approach indicates optimistic interpretation while slower or avoided approach suggests pessimistic bias.

The apparatus design facilitates controlled presentation of spatial cues while allowing natural locomotion patterns. The antechamber system ensures consistent starting conditions, while the goal box configuration enables standardized reward delivery and behavioral measurement protocols.
